Been reading the comments and realized that the only problem with the meaning of the phrase here is caused by the verb "to have". Because meaning of "have" can more or less change depending on a person's perspective. I think the meaning would be more clear if "have" was replaced with "save" or "keep".

before even watching the video, it's supposed to be "eat your cake and have it too", which does make perfect sense in context

I always took the phrase to refer to a pretty cake. You can either have it to admire, or you can mess it up by eating it. Nice to know the origin, though.

I had this explained to me as a reference to beautifully decorated masterwork cakes; the kind you could theoretically display as a stunning decoration. In this sense, you can either eat the cake, or "have it", and display it as a work of art. These two options are, of course, mutually exclusive.

Semantically, you can't NOT have your cake and eat it too (if you don't have it to begin with, what is there to eat?). As a non-native speaker, the word order seems weird, something like "you can't eat your cake and have it still" would make more sense. The Italian expression of the same sentiment is way more fun anyway: "You can't have the barrel full and the wife drunk".

If you can eat it then having it is implicit. Once eaten not having it is implicit. You can't eat your cake (which you already have) and have it too is the only logical wording.

I always understood it as you can't have your cake any more if you've already eaten it, but you can't eat it if you intend to keep it till later

I've had my cake and eaten it, been to two weddings and while I didn't dance I'm sure I could've, and if I gained a few pounds I'm sure I could fill two chairs.

TeddyLXIX, nice! However you have the phrase backwards. It is been commonly twisted in popular use but the correct use is to show that if you have first eaten your cake, you cannot still have the same cake. Thus at your wedding after having danced and had cut the cake and have eaten a piece of it, you would not miracously find the cake whole again.

The german phrase is actually "You can't dance at two weddings at the same time". It's physically impossible.

It has always made perfect sense to me. Once you eat a cake, you eventually no longer have the cake...I mean, you could save the poop and in a way claim to still "have" the cake, but that's a bit silly. You can either have the cake sitting on a shelf or plate or you can eat it, not both. You have to chose.

It does make sense. Cake is often very ornately decorated, it seems obvious to be that the dilemma presented in the phrase is that the cake both looks good and tastes good but if you eat it you will no longer have it to look at, and if you do not then you will not get to taste it. In short, if you eat the cake then you no longer have the cake because you ate it.

You can’t have your collectable toys and play with them too.

It's not even about sacrificing one thing. It's about not using something in order to keep it. Why have it if you're not gonna use it? Don't over keep/save things. That's the meaning (of the proper form)

What do you mean, it doesn't make any sense when it's written down? Of course it does. Once you eat a piece of cake, you don't have it anymore. You _can't._ It's gone now. Thus, it makes sense - you can't have a thing once it's gone.

I am fairly certain that if I place two chairs right next to each other and sit in the middle, I am, in fact, sitting on two chairs.

The phrase makes perfect sense. If you eat your cake, you will no longer have it.

Billy Maloney you can’t have your cake and eat it too. If you eat the cake, you don’t have it anymore. So you cant obviously have both

It make sense. It a paradox. You can eat it your cake but you can expect to have the same exact cake later. Its not about eating another piece of cake it about having the same one.

The Greek version is something like 'Have the whole pie and the dog full, too'

Our French version is : "you cannot have the butter, the money for the butter and the butt of the dairy girl".

It should be worded you can’t eat your cake and have it too.

If you eat the cake it's gone and you no longer have your cake.

If it's reversed like you just did, then it's fine. It would need to be more like "you can't keep your cake (in cake form), and eat it too".
