    I’m not sure if HKS mushrooms were part of the test, but I read a study where, among K&N and AEM as well as many other long time contemporaries in the aftermarket filtration market, AEM’s DryFlow cones actually restricted the most airflow in the aftermarket category, being decently close to OEM. That translates to a lot of filtration. I don’t recall the paper’s name but I did research on the filtration efficacy of K&N and AEM specifically and came across interesting data.

  • @Meekmillan

    @Meekmillan

    Жыл бұрын

    It’s not a research paper but I know Project farm did a video on some air filters (just fillers, not intakes) and the results were exactly what you’d expect. K&N performance filters were less restrictive so they let more particles into the engine. OEM style filters were more restrictive, allowed less particles into the engine. Honestly I could care less about 2-5 HP/TQ when it comes to “performance filters” Cold air intakes are a different story though lol

  • @halomaster985

    @halomaster985

    I remember strapping the Edelbrock Pro-Flo on cars years ago which is essentially the same system but mildly triangular. HKS drops the same thing but fully round and marketed to JDM and it’s an original thought. It’s a fine dry filter design, but any properly sized filter will feed any engine enough air; it’s not a part that really realizes any power gain by piddling over the type of filter used; the only difference once the filter is passing the required CFM will be actual particulate filtration. Choose a properly CFM rated filter with the best particulate rating you can fit in the space available, and place it with access to clean, cool air. Job done.

    For anyone wondering, the name is an HKS Super Power Flow. The kits really aren’t $1000, at least not until you get into the more complicated things. A filter and a regular kit doesn’t go for a whole whole lot. For instance, one for my Acura RSX goes for ~$200 (with piping).

    Back in my college pizza boy days I put an eBay knock off one (pretty sure it was even in an "HKS" box) on my '85 MR2. One rainy day I was pulling into work, saw smoke in my rearview and quickly realized that *I* was what was smoking. Popped the hood and my engine was on fire! I ran across a busy street like Frogger, threw open the door and screamed "MY CAR'S ON FIRE!". Ran outside and drowned it in a fire extinguisher while the fire department was on their way. It shut down Main St for about an hour and I had to leave work so I could get my car towed home. After closer inspection I saw that the filter was what had started, or at least spread, the fire. Apparently either the metal screen had arced against the battery that was right above it, or the open vents in the hood had let in water and caused something to spark (a few years later those same vents let water into my alternator and cooked it, thanks, Toyota). Luckily nothing was badly damaged so after a few cuss words and a new air filter, the MR2 lived to see another couple thousand redlines and another couple dozen breakdowns. I sold it five years later to someone else who absolutely ruined it; wrecked it within a few days, spray painted it pink, and last year after over 35 years and 200,000+ miles of getting driven like a rented race car, it blew a head gasket. Man, I miss that car.

    We used those on 7 Marine outboards, but yeah we pulled the green foam out first.

    Holly had them for carburetors since the 1960's. They tend to draw alot of heat. But work well.

    They must have been the company making an identical design for carburetors 50 years ago too.

    They opened cad smashed 3 hexagons in a repeating pattern and got this guy to sell it to you for $150 to $1000. That's the difference.

    The day I got my Skyline, I give it the beans and the car stalled. Freaked me out until I took apart the MAF sensor and filter. It had disintegrated into the damn intake

    There's a lot if misconception in this thread that the air filter costs $150 everytime it needs to be replaced. While the intake system may cost $150, the foam filter inside can be removed and replaced. That foam costs arond $20-$30.

    Have seen these on Audi V10s as well. Someone did a V10 swap into a B5 S4, thing is SO slick

    You can build that $1000 piping with parts from Home Depot and make it look exactly like the same shit. Some people love to throw money at anything with a brand name

    They Are Great If You Don't Have The Depth Space. I Always Try And Run The Largest Air Filter Possible If I Have The Space. If There's Not A lot Of Space I'll Run A Foam Filter Instead. They Don't Filter As Well But They Do Flow Better For Thier Size Compared. Plus They Never Really Get Clogged To Where They Crush In. It's Really A Glorified Turbo Guard These Foam Filters haha

    These are great because they give you the peace of mind of looking like an air filter but don't work like an air filter so you get free flowing power of no air filter while believing you aren't running no air filter.
