Have you heard of Heron's Formula?

Ойын-сауық

So I got thinking about this after I had helped a tutee of mine with a geometry problem. As I had expected, there was a formula that calculated the area of a triangle from the length of its sides alone: Heron's formula. It's understandable why we don't focus heavily on this formula, but it doesn't change the fact that it's a neat looking formula.
I also want to say it's great to see there's over 200 of you subscribed to the channel! Thank you! I really do appreciate the support.

I am egyptian and we have a lesson called Herons formula. I am secondary 2 (year 11) second term. It is in triginometry section in pure math subject

    HoSza1's variation for the triangle area formula is the following. Construct the matrix U, from the side lengths: U = [ 0 a b c ] [ a 0 c b ] [ c b a 0 ] [ b c 0 a ] Then the area is the quarter of the square root of the determinant of U: A = √|U|/4

I like Heron's formula especially when I don't have a calculator to hand. Plugging the numbers in and finding the square root is a lot easier than finding the height by trigonometry etc. So how did Heron develop his formula without algebra?

Hey John, well the notions of algebra had been around for quite some time before Hero of Alexandria (the founder of Heron's formula) and the geometry books of Euclid's elements were about to, in which, holds pretty complicated equivalences of ratios of sides to one another etc. So my guess would be Heron's formula was found by using algebra of some form, though possibly not as neat and modern as is in this video.

@@ciaranmcevoy9875 Proto-algebra was certainly around. I used to use the "piles of stones" questions from Greek times - but they were essentially word problems. I used it in my classroom as a starter - moving from word problems to later algebra - hopefully convincing my students that it made their lives easier. The developments in the Arab world added to the renaissance European thinking and Descartes notation makes Heron's formula much easier.

Heath's Euclid's Elements is a beautiful work. Check out Volume 2, page 87 (Note on book IV, proposition 4). The proof is largely geometric.

Great - memorable, helpful, exciting! Thank you. But all that thanking of your own at the end - I never understood the logic of that. What are you thanking somebody for? For watching a video of yours somebody is interested in? For subscribing to your channel somebody is interested in? No one is doing any of that for you, but for him or her. And why thank somebody collectively, when every viewer watches your videos individually? When it comes to your views, there is no such thing as us. Yup, no us there with a sort of a concerted effort to do you one. Regarding your videos, there exists only each viewer's individual effort to serve his or her individual interst. Furthermore, if you're feeling thankful for the money you've been receiving, thank the people behind KZread for coming up with the model useful simultaneously to the content creators, KZread, and the advertisers. Finally, if you're creating content philanthropically, effecting each viewer's feeling of thankfulness, then it doesn't behove you to do the thanking, but rather it does us to thank - you, unless you feel you oughta direct your thanks to God, that is if you believe (s)he's been behind whatever is making you feel glad; conversely, if you're no such a believer, then you are confusing your misinterpreted feeling of thankfulness for something quite else, perhaps for your actually feeling good about yourself, in which case the only thing logical for you to share, if share you must, is the unattractive "Aren't I so great?" in lieu of "I thank you all," which, regarding pretty much all effusive thankers is what their "thanking us" is really a euphemism for.
