Sam Sneed's average driving distance was 290 yards with old persimmon woods. Can you imagine how far he could hit a drive today with the improved technology? I also think strength was different back then. No doubt physical conditioning is much more improved for the average golfer and most professionals have a disciplined workout regimen but I think that men 40-50 years ago were much harder men and had more natural strength.
