The gentle leader is a total game changer. Have a VERY leash reactive, non aggressive dog. It's taken a while, but she's loose leash until another dog barks or runs then she just didn't care about the correction. With the gentle leader, just a small correction and leave it... she's great! I really can't thank you enough for sharing this with us!!! You're the BOMB!!

I watched the loose leash walking videos and it fixed the pulling in one day. Thank you! I couldn't get the lunging and barking completely under control. I'm sure it's because I'm not doing the method right, as you said in your other video. This video convinced me to start conditioning the gentle leader. My dog is not listening or feeling the leash corrections if other dogs are present. I'll try to remember to update this comment if the gentle leader fixes this. Thanks for everything! In addition to subscribing, I talk you up at the dog park constantly!

Through Joel’s videos, I was introduced to the gentle leader for my Rottie. Watching an episode of Caesar working with a Malinois using a gentle leader, I learned to keep the leash short (relaxed arm by my side directly in line with dog’s shoulder) when walking Rosie. I also clip the leash to both the gentle leader and neck collar. Worked like a charm and now my 100lb Rottie and I have relaxed and enjoyable walks! Those tips may help others and wanted to share! Thank you Joel for all of your help!

I have a 4 year old Bouvier des Flandres who weighs 90 pounds and is reactive. I weigh 115 so you can imagine the challenges of handling him on a walk if he gets startled. I have been watching your videos for 2 months and have made progress. Yesterday, I watched the video of the Standard Poodle with the Gentle Leader. I've had a Gentle Leader, but never felt confident enough to try it on my Bouv. This morning, I did. Rumor (that's his name) fought tooth and nail to get it off. I took him to the park and we started our walk. The difference was astounding!!! He started to "leave me" to go sniff a bush... I barely applied pressure and he came back ... "oh yeah, sorry, Mom." We walked for another 30 minutes and he was perfect. So, thank you very much!!

Can you please do a video about managing & training doberman breed characteristics? My puppy just turned 5 months old & discovered her bark. She used to be super interested in people/kids/dogs & wanted to play with everyone but since she hit the 5 month mark, every moving shadow will fully raise her hackles & she will do her “big-girl bark”. We have a large patio overlooking a busy street & it’s not an acceptable behavior, even though I know she’s wanting to protect her home. Even on walks, the sight of small child running or a dog sets off her prey drive (god help us when a bunch of stray chihuahuas roam by). What I’ve been doing is distracting her with a squeaky toy (when I see a trigger or when she barks) so that she makes eye contact with me & then reward her by tossing the toy for her to play with instead of letting her fixate on the trigger. I want her to behave like your mr.Prince does. 😅🥰

My dog is mostly great with this technique EXCEPT, when a dog suddenly pops out of nowhere when we're not expecting it he'll IMMEDIATELY hit the end of the leash and go crazy. The self-correction even though it was more intense than our regular correction has zero effect in those situations 😔. Super frustrating.

My blue heeler is leash reactive to cars, dogs, other animals, and anything that moves fast. Correcting her on a prong, e-collar or gentle leader causes displaced aggression against ME. I have to carry a steel baton to defend myself against her attacks. Once she flies into a rage she cannot be reasoned with. She has unsnapped prong collars in her frenzies and escaped from all harnesses. Evidently she received zero training or socialization before I got her at age 1.2 (now aged 1.9). I would like to see a video with a dog like this as subject.

Suggestion. Before you allow the owner to take the leash I think that you should provide the owner with some time to practice the leash "Pop". This doesn't have to be with a dog. The practice could be with a non moving post for example. The owner should practice the technique first on a non living thing before doing it with a live dog. Dond

I have a Border collie/mix the description sounds very much like my dog when I first got him (super high energy). Started with flat collar and he pulled like a little bull ( 4 weeks) . Moved the a gentle leader ( two months) he was 50% better but still no fun to walk for me. Then I went to a Milton Sprenger prong collar (Made in Germany). 99% better. The Milton Sprenger has polished prongs unlike every other prong collar I have seen. I took the Sprenger collar and rubbed it against my own neck to see what it might be like. Did it hurt? no it didnt. It applied a even amount of pressure on my own neck and my neck is fur free. :-) IK have since moved back to the gentle leader after two months on thee Prong. He respects the gentle leader much more now than he did initially. Every once in a while I do still need to put him back on the prong but not for more than a couple days and he goes back to the gentle leader.

Another question 😅 what would you identify my dog’s reactivity trigger as? He seems sensitive to changes in human noise level or people talking but google doesn’t seem to know what that is. Things that set him off are: people speak-yelling at each other from a distance (e.g. my mom yells that she’s leaving from downstairs when we’re upstairs in my room; me saying hello to the neighbors on the street from our balcony (intonation doesn’t seem to matter- happy, angry, sad, etc)), when he’s meeting a new person & he’s sorta gotten used to their presence but then they laugh or make an odd sound in the conversation & he acts like he’s never met that person in his life, and lastly, if we’re on a walk he will ignore most people and dogs but as soon as someone directly addresses me/him “hey your dog is so cute!” he will go off. They’re not quick, aggressive barks - moreso loud & repetitive alerting sounding

He went over how to phase out a gentle leader in a past video... Depends on how quickly the dog progresses. When you are at the point where the dog is no longer reactive on the walk leave the GL on & switch back to the regular collar you plan on using to walk him. Then continue the walk... if all goes well with passing triggers on the collar, then you can slip off the GL. Be sure the collar you will be walking the dog on once trained is secure & they cannot get out of it. Don't go to quickly in phasing out the GL. It's not a race, it's a process! Hope that helps. I'm not a fan of correcting the dog on the gentle leader.imagine what it would do on our necks.dogs are not that different. I would definitely correct him with water from a water bottle, has also suprise element and won't be a danger.but you need to carry a smal water bottle around for a few weeks and afterwards frequently.I drilled a hole in the cap.and use the waterbottle to have drinking water for him or me on longer walks or to keep other dogs at a distance.however my dog is 10kg.people who are inexperienced who pull the dog hard and are to late when the dog is lunging we can really injure him. "Shooting" him with water (not in winter) is better for normal people

We have been following your advice on leash reactivity but feel that as he is getting bigger and stronger we need to try a gentle leader. We have tried introducing it slowly, with rewards (treats/toys), trying to take his mind off it. Just wondering how you introduce it to young dogs.

is this not teaching the dog to be scared of the leash, instead of training him to listening. this is not a hate comment. was just wondering. as im new to dog training and would like some advice.

@Joel , ANYBODY, PLEEEASE; I DO NOT know HOW to correct /stop my puppy’s unwanted behaviors. All the traditional or (my) known tactics don’t work IN THE LEAST, such as: a loud and quick clap, or can of coin, or voice of “Ahh!” Or “Eckk!””NO and STOP mean nothing either. Kneeing, pushing, removing her, distracting, or positive reinforcement, ONLY MAKE HER RETURN BACK HARDER withhhh nips and bites and jumping!!😩 Behavior im currently trying to stop is jumping or walking into a certain flower bed and ripping up the flowers (by root!) biting the flowers, laying and digging in its dirt- just being in there PERIOD!! Also, nipping and jumping at my body, clothes, and hands, even face--even MORE as I’m trying to correct. I’ve tried a leash too and let HER body running to the end of it toward the flowers make her get Mssg to stop but she just keeps trying to lunge or run or crawl toward them. This 3 1/2 month old golden girl gets MORE wound up, determined, triggered, and disrespectful the more I try to correct her! It’s a complete and quickly escalating snowball effect at the time. THEN, I have even MORE behavioral issues than the original action I was trying to correct!! NOTHING seems to snap her out of her behavior. She’s smart enough to learn other things pretty quickly and we’ll (IMO), yet just can’t seem to learn the word”NO”?? I’m sorry, I find that extremely hard to buy. To me, I think she’s just CHOOSING to so-called “not learn” the word “No”. I have not tried a gentle leader or any collars other than a reg one since she’s young and growing. I WAS trying to teach her “NO” by command and my actions but no luck. I’m frustrated and a bit worried about lack of respect she has for me . I believe that I AM HER TRIGGER (or one of them at least) and I don’t know a damn thing to do about it). I will happily change I just don’t know WHAT to change. I need HELP!!!!!! @Joel?? Anybody?????? Desperado in Texas😭 💔

Hello Julie, It could have been me who wrote your post. We have tried exactly the same with our german shepherd who is now 6 months old. From the time we got him until now, it has not been much fun. He also did not want to learn anything and was also more turned on when we reprimanded him with e.g. "No" - then he just started biting and jumping up and was completely out of reach. Every single morning, he would bite into our little carpet in the kitchen, and when I said no and pulled him away, I was bitten on both hands, arms and legs. My robes and nightgowns have holes because he has bitten and pulled at them. It was cruel. I tried everything one can buy of scents to keep him away from the rug m.m. - but nothing helped. It has been so awful that I actually thought about relocating him. Then I came to his 4-month examination and complained to my vet. He said, try this. It is a spray that veterinarians spray on bandages on the dogs when they e.g. have had surgery and the like, just so they do not have to bite the bandage - and you know what Julie - IT HELPS !!!!!!! It's called COTHIVET. I sprayed it on the edge of the rug and he has not bitten into it since. I also used it when he started biting my arms, legs, etc., then I sprayed into the air, that is, between him and me, and then AWAY HE WAS. Now I just have to take the bottle if he gets a little relapse and I no longer have to spray, ha ha - as long as he sees the bottle, then the party stops. As I said, he is now 6 months old and he is so cute indoors. He goes and plays with himself and listens. He can sit, cover and stay - which is not much - but it is then a little. Never thought he would learn anything. Most importantly Julie, try to talk quietly to your dog. My dog does not "tolerate" harsh words like a harsh "no" - then the brain shuts down. I speak quietly to him and it has a super good effect. The challenge remains when we go on walks. He also pulls on the string so he is about to be suffocated by his collar. It is not good. So now we use a K9 harness and it has done great wonders. I think he was stressed out by the constant strain on his neck - which he himself is to blame for - but nonetheless, it has helped. There is still a lot missing, but the small victories are important, so it goes in the right direction. Give it time Julie - it will be better. Try my advice. Buy this spray. Then you no longer have a dog that bites you and jumps up on you, etc., which then also makes for a calmer atmosphere in the house, and the dog can feel it. Hope you can use this - I have used Google translation - but hope you understand the meening. Greeting from Denmark.

@@hirihiri3229 😊WoW. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your comment. That was sooooo nice of you! I forgot to mention that I too had tried spraying stuff around the flower bed but, it didn’t deter her at ALL. The strongest stuff was almost PURE white vinegar- 3 BOTTLES OF IT AT ONE TIME in a 4 foot square space and she just briefly sniffed a spot and then walked right over it, into the middle of it all (where I had ALSO sprayed) as before. I WILL look to see if the spray you recommend can be found/purchased here in the U States. I’ll try Amazon as well. Sounds like you’re doing better and I’m happy for you! I’ve been thru just 2 other puppy experiences within about 39 years and 1 was a dream and the other was SOOOO hard. The hard one had walking issues too so I know what ur going thru! Before I go- I just wanted to tell u that my husband has been to Denmark many times and when I told him about your generous advice, he told me “Oh yeah- the people are the greatest, happiest people in the world❣️” If they are like you.. I can understand why. THANX AGAIN SO MUCH. I’ll be crossing my fingers you keep progressing nicely with your pup. Take care!!🙋🏻‍♀️ Julie in Texas Ps I hope u can read this because I don’t know how to translate this into your language!! 😩

Have you started training obedience with her? I know that's generally the starting point/foundation for all dogs. She may be a puppy and you can't correct her too harshly, but you can start incorporating structure and commands which will be useful at all stages.

@@ParrotVolancy Do u mean enrolled in formal training or just on my own? I’ve myself started trying to teach her potty training, sit, come, and her name of course. Even shake which obviously isn’t necessary- just a trick. So far, she’s doing pretty well with all of them for her age and the minimal time we’ve had with her- 3 weeks. BUTTTT…….. it’s next to impossible to teach things- ESPECIALLY obedience, if they refuse (or can’t) to learn the word “NO”! THAT is my point.

I'm not saying that your dog is or isn't worse than the dogs in these videos... But keep in mind when you see these dogs at his facility they're almost never going to be "as bad" (as extreme) as they are at home with just their owners. It sounds like you're at your wits end... Hang in there, he is really slammed with requests. 🙏

@@jameschild1321 im at the end of the road. if he doesnt pass his assessment test for a board and train program today. im going to have to find a place to put him down. hes had 2 intense reactive episodes in my elevator at my apartment building to where they are actively just trying to find a way to get me kicked out or have him removed. hes bit someone i know nail almost clean off caused alot of bleeding. i cant take him outside for anything. taking him to the vet is not an option because he doesnt behave even in cars. if i dont get a response in the next 24hrs im probably putting him down. because ive tried everything from personal training sessions. to group sessions. to cbd. to actual medicine to help with his anxiety. the last thing i have left is this appointment with this behavioralist and if he fails for the pass he needs for the board and train program then it looks like im done and have no other choice
