Hausa Proverb 10

Proverbs are an essential learning tool for students of African languages. In the African Languages Proverbs Project, the Boston University African Studies Center has collected short performances by African theater troupes in their native languages. These languages include Wolof from Senegal, Hausa from Niger, Amharic from Ethiopia, Xhosa and Zulu from South Africa and Swahili from Tanzania. Each performance focuses on one of ten common proverbs and places them within a cultural and social context. These videos are designed for advanced students of the languages and are an invaluable tool for developing language proficiency and cultural competence. While they stand on their own as authentic, and entertaining, learning resources, they can also be used as supplements to the African Languages Proverbs Project workbooks.
This video features the Hausa proverb 'Tsohon gatarinka, ya hi sari ka ba ni.'

This is truly annoying and a total fabrication of the proverb. The whole concept of using Islamic prayer to explain this is wrong and could be insulting to Muslims because the proverb has nothing to do with religion. I am a qualified, native Hausa linguist, with a B.A. degree in Hausa language and culture since 1989 from Bayero university in Kano northern Nigeria. I have been teaching Hausa at various schools in DC area, including DLI, DLS, ICA, CLC, INLUNGUA, DICTYON for more than 20 years and I was a Hausa broadcaster in Nigeria and here in VOA Hausa service, Washington DC for more than 20 years. I have no problem with the Niger dialect but it is not the standard Hausa dialect of majority Hausa speakers. I watched many of your video clips of Hausa proverbs and they are always almost wrong. For starters, this one the proverb is "guntun gatarinka, ya fi sari ka bani", not "tsohon gatarinka...". I will respectively suggest that you go back and review them and seek out professional linguists and cultural experts to help you. You can contact me on linkedin. But most of your video clips are totally wrong, misleading and not standard.
