Haunted Places Along the Ohio River (Southern, Indiana)

Ancient curses, river pirates, haunted mausoleums above the river, and mansions over 150 years old, where former residents, long dead, refuse to leave. I am intrigued by legends, and the Ohio River, along the southern part of Indiana, is filled with them!
Many places you pass every day, and don’t give a second thought, are the setting for many old, and interesting stories. And if you ask local people, they will tell you incredible tales, handed down for generations, that are in no library or internet database!
Come along for a road trip, starting at Evansville, Indiana, ending at Vevay, and exploring legends everywhere in between!

It's so cool to see so many locations I can identify by just a glance! I live in New Albany and grew up in Jeffersonville. My grandfather was a storyteller and family historian. He grew up in New Albany on the family homestead off Spickert Knob, if I'm remembering correctly. He loved telling the spooky stories to us as kids and they are ingrained in my memory forever. Thanks so much for presenting our rich past history for others to know and enjoy. It's so important to keep legends and stories alive for future generations. So much gets lost through time.

Our stories are worth remembering and re-telling. I’ve met so many good people, with a depth of history in their files, or in their heads, and have tried to capture it for posterity. Hopefully these videos preserve a part of it, a little longer.

I have familial roots in Southern Indiana along the Ohio River, so I was excited to see this video. My paternal grandfather was born in the Tell City Canellton area in 1908 before his family moved to a farm in Western Ky. Around 19 years ago I went with my dad and other immediate family members on a drive along the Ohio near Tell City. It's definitely got a certain energy. And I've lived in two haunted houses and seen the ghost of a headless woman in the second one ( this is in Middle Tennessee) so yes I believe. 😊 Thanks so much for the video. 💫

Wow, Roger, the more of your productions I watch the more I wish I had had a pal like you to run around the Ohio River Valley with. Excellent work! And for whatever it’s worth, I have seen things and experienced events that I cannot explain but that assure me this Earthly existence we share is but a small fraction of what Life has in store for us; considering how small a sliver of the electromagnetic spectrum we can observe with our very simple human machine, I wish “science” was more accepting and respectful of the unknown. As children, my father and aunt were being driven to school by my grandmother on a winter morning. The road was frozen and at the bottom of a hill their car slid onto tracks in front of a loaded coal train. The train hit them and drug the car nearly 200 yards and onto a short bridge where it fell off, landing upside down. The car was demolished and the three of them did not suffer even a bruise. I saw and heard a nun softly comforting several cooing babies in Eastwood Church off US60 in Louisville while doing renovations with my coworker. I assumed a daycare service was provided for the church’s members without considering that we had unlocked the church that morning and the only access to that room was to pass below our ladders. In Manoa valley on Oahu, I was left with red finger-shaped marks, as if slapped, across my cheek while just laying down for the night when at the same moment my housemate was awoken by a shadowy figure looming over him menacingly in a separate room. My grandfather haunted his house boat on Harrington Lake But the most convincing experience was being electrocuted while on a job site in the Yucatán jungle when a coworker disconnected the wrong line to a pump control box running from a 200kva generator. The experience was excruciating for a moment and then I was very lucidly on a different plane of existence. The hot sun and blue sky were gone; I could no longer feel my back pain or sunburn or insect bites. It was not like being knocked out or passing out or taking psychedelics, the “me” that is typing now, was looking at an infinite horizon in all direction that I can only describe as a horizontally stretched rainbow with inviting golden-red glowing upwards and terrifying violet-to-black downwards and a low humming sound came from all directions. There was a definite feeling that up was “good” and “down” was beyond the worst bad a human brain can conjure. The other sensation was that no matter what had occurred in life on Earth, that every moment for every person was all as it was supposed to be no matter how confounding. And that any worry or doubt was only a misunderstanding of what was an integrable part in each of our “lives”. It was beautiful. I struggle to explain, I hope it reads intelligibly. There was absolute peace like I have never felt even in my mother’s embrace. But suddenly, I realized that my perspective of the surrounding trees and truck and generator, which then were one dimensional and translucent with an iridescent glow, was somehow wrong; I was too tall and looked down to see where my feet should be but saw the “ground” was far below and panicked as if having been bucked from a saddle. I reacted reflexively and grabbed at what would have been the saddlecock to pull my butt down into the saddle and suddenly everything went black. I could suddenly feel the hot sun on my face, my back hurt, my skin itched and I could now hear not just my coworker but now the whole crew and one of them exclaimed, “he’s breathing!”. In my confusion, I wondered who they could be talking about and realized my eyes were closed. I opened them and sat up and they all jumped back staring at me in disbelief. The coworker who I was originally with was in our truck with his head in his hands and could barely look at me. The only physical marker of what had happened was the hair from my nostrils and ears was burnt away completely and the screw driver I was holding was singed badly. We were a rowdy crew and went back to work maybe 15 minutes later. I wish I would have gotten an EKG or EKK but we just got drunk after work unfortunately. I am now working on a VR simulation with a tech savvy friend to hopefully share em masse what might be coming next.

There’s so much we don’t understand. Sometimes, I wonder if we’re even supposed to. But for a fact, this life in front of us is a short party, and some of us leave earlier than others. Whenever we escape a near fatal event, we’re given a second shot at doing better. A wake-up call.

For 18 years I lived near the Ohio River in Jeffersonville, in a house built by renowned engineer Reuben Wells. (He designed the steam locomotive that pushed trains up Madison Hill in Madison, Indiana, and used his earnings to build my old house.) I wrote about the massive amount of paranormal activity that happened to me and my late husband there in a book titled The Spook, available from Amazon. The activity continued when I moved to New Albany, and it occasionally happens now that I’ve moved to Florida. Teresa Fisher

I once had a house in Oregon that was haunted, built in 1892. In the kitchen I sometimes saw what looked like a short woman walking to the kitchen door, and when I went to the door there was no one there. After it happened a few times, I found out that before the porch was built there was a walkway that went around to that side - that's why she looked so short. The walkway was still there under the porch. There were many other things like that. I never felt like it was spirits though; more like a shadow, like if a picture hangs on the wall in the same place for years, and you move it and there's still the shape of it on the wall. The only talking was from a woman in the kitchen, and she said our names sometimes, in a whisper.

When flight 17 you mentioned in the video crashed they didn’t have enough room in the morgue so they used the old gymnasium in Cannelton as a makeshift one. At least 12 yrs ago me and my youngest daughter attended an overnight investigation of the old gym with the now defunct (as far as I can tell) Tell City Ghost Hunters. We experienced paranormal activity both during the investigation and at home for a few weeks afterwards. You should check the place out.

The people at the Scott County museum are wonderful! But man, how could that place not be haunted after all the negative things that happened there! Aside from the two events mentioned in this video, the other one that got me was when I stayed at the Seelbach Hotel, Louisville, Kentucky. My company at time, got me a room there, on a floor that’s supposedly haunted. The story is that a woman fell down an elevator shaft to her death, and she’s never left the hotel. Well, middle of the night, it literally sounded like a woman screamed while falling down an elevated shaft! I didn’t sleep at all, could barely concentrate at the company event!

I made friends with a lady who’s an empath. Since childhood, she’s sensed dead people and former histories of places. Not a strange person, but sensitive to certain places. I’ve taken her places to see what she’ll say. If she says, “this is a bad place,” we’re out of there. One day I said, “When I was in my twenties, I stopped at this deserted country park. Just got the strangest feeling from being there, and I don’t have any special gifts like you do. Tell me what you think.” I took her there, she got out, got a strange look on her face as she looked around, and said, “This is not a good place. Someone died here. I think they were killed by a group of men. My ears are really ringing!” I hadn’t said anything, but my ears were ringing like crazy. “We should go,” she said, and we did. Our ears continued to ring the rest of the day. Super odd.

My folks grew up in Lawrence County! While I didn’t grow up there, I always feel at peace when I visit. I always know what I like to cover, but have a poor sense of what other people will enjoy! I’ve taken polls, do the videos people rate the highest, and then almost no one watches the video they voted for. 😂 Legends seem to be what people like the most. South of Otis Park, on the way to Tunnelton, is a prehistoric site, excavated by IU. It’s on private property, but I’d love to go there. It’s not the only one, I recall three similar Lawrence County sites, but all of them are on private property. The one near Tunnelton is where the guy nearly hit a humanoid, hairy figure. By his description, it sort’ve looked like a Bigfoot, but not very tall. He could’ve shot it, but it seemed human like, and it didn’t try to attack him. I don’t know if there’s any connection to that sighting and the prehistoric village, but it borders on spooky! When I was growing up, I heard spooky stories about Chapel Hill. Something about a hanging in an old tree, near the road. I can’t remember all the details, but kids dared each other to drive there at night.

Bitter iniquity within the land and traumatic events, both past and future, can create a ripple effect we misinterpret as paranormal activity. It's just a concept, not a big theory of everything. There's so much going on. It boggles the mind how it all works. ❤ 💯

Fascinating video. I've heard of some of the areas, but not all. I live your storytelling. My dad used to tell us a story whenever we visited Versailles State Park. On the shores of the lake, you can see a cliff across the way...the edge of a cemetery. He passed down a story from his grandfather. He told of a doctor who was caught digging up bodies. He was chased off the cliff in horse and buggy, to his death. A little more to this story but this is the scary jest of it. Have you heard of that in your travels?

This past year I sold the family home…..it’s always been haunted but not in a scary way. This past summer I had the experience of taking the plant medicine ayahuasca in the jungle. I was shown some scary things about my grandmothers and why I was raised in a house in Hell. I’m no longer attached to the house, happy it’s out of the family. And I don’t think of the towns name as just a novelty anymore. I have no need to return to Hell. Places have energy, I was light struggling to shine most of my life.

Lafayette School Corporation owned a building years ago called Pythian Home, it used to be seriously haunted. The high school kids used it for a haunted house on Halloween for years but it was tore down for mold I believe. Also in Monticello, there is a house used as the original jail. The cell is still there and the building is said to be haunted. Also in Monticello, a house used to house bands playing at Indiana Beach was haunted. So many stories in my area, I could go on 😂

There’s many examples of residual hauntings, all over the world. The electromagnetic replay theory is probably my favorite, where events are recorded in rock or even walls with lead paint: sort of like a natural TV, replaying events. But the experiences where entities interact or even move things: that’s the truly scary stuff.

@@Letsgoexplore2468 You’re lucky you weren’t arrested. Local legend is that trains used to stop in the middle, and unload sensitive government documents / other things of national security. An elderly man once showed a friend of mine a picture of one of “the secret rooms”. For a short time I worked in a jewelry store. Lots of cool stuff, and interesting people. One nice elderly lady, came in with a beautiful ring that I buffed and polished. She told me about some items her husband brought back from overseas, during World War II. A little boy approached him with a box of gems and asked if he’d buy them. Everyone needed money, and there’s no telling where they came from. He bought the entire box for practically nothing, including alexandrite. “We only have lab made Alexandrite, it doesn’t do all the cool things natural alexandrite does. What’s yours like?” “When I hold it, it slowly turns different colors. It’s really pretty,” she said. The natural alexandrite is very pricey of course, I asked how big it was, to gage what it might be worth. “Oh I think it’s half the size of my hand.” 😳 I told her she had a small fortune at home, to keep it a secret. She was going to bring it over to show me, but I changed jobs. I still would’ve loved to have seen that rock!
