I just thought of something. Redd is a kitsune, a yokai with tricky magical powers. Maybe he enchanted the fake paintings/statues somehow? It makes sense considering that the haunted artwork follows the same strict day/ night pattern that many yokai follow.

Fun fact: Tom is a tanuki that also like to play tricks on humans. According to stories kitsune and tanuki hate each other and fight often. Tom says in the past he got scammed and felt like a disgrace and a lot of people theorize that redd scammed tom and now they hate each other

I'm so glad other people agree, I was expecting people to be like "gEt oVeR iT" in the comments, which is a bit more difficult when I have a heart condition, and hearing issues so I have my volume all the way up so I can still hear youtubers when they mumble. Not cool at all.

There is no proof to back this up, but what if Nintendo uses this opportunity to introduce a new character? It could be a mischievous ghost that haunts the paintings or something

After I watched this video I saw the closed eyes wistful painting (aka the haunted one) and I paid attention to what Redd said and he said there was an aura in the painting. I don't know if that is just a coincidence that he said that or a way to tell you got a haunted painting.

i had a FEELING it was based on time, i always messed with the wistful painting and noticed her eyes close at night and open during the day wanna know something even creepier? the opposite applies, you can actually watch the wistful painting's eyes open up after being closed, and i believe a creepy snap sound accompanies it no idea what time she opens her eyes, though EDIT: came to the stream late and didn't see the beginning where you recorded the eyes opening up, sorry about that!

I've just checked the back of my painting and saw it. I've had this thing hanging in my room for over a month. I'd noted a couple times that the head looked weird but I'm never there to see if it changes. Seeing that stain sealed it for me. Honestly the black stain is creepier than the actual haunting itself.

As for the creepy painting smiling when evening comes, I have some theory. Back in the Japanese period called Pax Tokugawa (17th, 18th centuries), when a handsome kabuki actor finished all the plays scheduled for the day, lots of people from the audience stayed in line in order to spend some time with their favorite kabuki actor. This included treating the actor to alcohol and even giving him some money in exchange for sleeping with him. So the stern facial gesture of the painting when it's day time could mean he's on stage and has to put a lot of energy in it and when nightime comes, him smiling could mean his day's over, he can relax at last and date members from his audience (mostly men) who in most cases were madly in love for him. This could be a reason this painting is haunted the way it is. I'm reading a book atm with the japanese pleasure quarters as setting so that's why I know this information. Just adding my two cents! Amazing vid btw.

I think the scariest one is the girl with the pearl earing suddenly opening her eyes staring right at you like she's watching you. Watching this in bed at 2 am didn't help. Creepy. Just saw your comment but I am glad to not be the only one who noticed!

That last one is really interesting, because the Pokemon Baltoy and Claydol are actually based on the Dogū. Because these artifacts are theorized to be aliens, used to contact other worlds, or are from another world, more specifically the spirit world, it's the reason why the two pokemon are psychic type. Also the word "Dogū" in japanese translates to "earthen figure", hence the ground type. Pretty neat stuff.

They do look different as well. When I first saw the woman with the pearl earring on Redd's boat it was nighttime, so her eyes were closed. I didn't know the painting was haunted, and got really confused cuz I read online the only difference between the fake painting and the real one was the earring, but not the eyes. Still didn't buy it but now I regret not buying it.

i'd like to think the 'Haunted statue' is a reference to Cherry, the assistant in Akkala tech labs in BoTW (the robot used to make ancient armor)

He's smiling because beauty is looking forwards at him during the night. Girl with pearl earing closes her eyes because the painter goes to bed with his wife (lol) Beauty looks forwards to see Mr kabuki man (if you put them on the same wall) And the little figurine is picking up let's plays of Zelda breath of the wild because its eyes are the same shade as the guardians glow, and some of the other artwork from that period was used to design the guardians. You notice, it looks like the ancient armour and weapons selling machine in the other ancient lab. I think they based that off these statues. (These are my personal thoughts for the why's of the art, but the Nintendo people said the stuff about the actual pots and statues in the making of BotW if I remember right)

God damnit, everything has variations in this game. If it wasn't enough to have real and fake paintings to collect, now we got haunted ones too.

There’s something similar to this in the original splatoon. During splatfests on the map Museum D’alfonso the statues will sometimes do some creepy laughs.

This guy's so over-the-top terrified of each transition of each painting. He would not survive a horror game lmao; gets scared of someone closing their eyes

Honestly I have been jumpscared in a discord call with a base boosted never gonna give you up I wouldn’t survive ten minutes in a horror game

That Dogu statue and the space alien theory sounds real. It also reminds me of another game that they’re present in. In Okami, near the mid-end of the game, there are enemies that look exactly like the Dogu statues, and I think they’re called them as well, and when the first one of them appears, it decends from the sky in a beam of light, kind of like a UFO beaming down something or someone.

This is such a cool little feature. I like how this makes the fakes a little special, but I kind of would have loved something like this on the real ones. A haunted museum would be really cool. I hope we get more spooky stuff around Halloween.

Well the song was KK Dirge but I think they have noises when they react

Like one time I was buying painting and I saw this one but first I saw it with eyes open then I when to google to check to see if reals or not when I come back the painting had it eyes closed And I was like *HOLY MOLY GUACAMOLY*

Damn, that scream startled my poor old sleeping dog :'(

I legit got the painting in the intro and I went in my house and saw that her eyes were closed... I was like "what?" but I had NO clue there were legit haunted paintings

The first painting I bought is haunted and I didn't realize it! I was so confused when Blathers told me it was a fake because it looked real. It's the scary painting and luckily I hung it up in my house so I still have it. So cool! Thanks for sharing this information!

I have a theory Nintendo must have put this in due to the fact the engine has the capability to hide certain items in the code that way they can give you more of a interesting change in your gameplay

This seems perfect for Halloween. I wonder if Nintendo has more creepy content up there sleeves for October. I remember how popular haunted towns were back in New Leaf and visiting them using the dream machine bring extra creepiness.

Okay. I used to have the Graceful Painting in my bed room in my house. I didn’t find it weird until i watched a video of the real vs fake and I thought it was real. Turns out it was fake and I was so confused, Now i’m watching this and i have the haunted one. How fun!

Lol that opening was great. I noticed one of the paintings seemed to change, that the graceful one was facing a different direction at night, and pointed it out to my sisters, but was just like "whatever it's a fake anyway." Had no idea it was haunted 😱 They should have put The Scream in the game. That would have been a great one to make a haunted fake of lol.

I love how we are constantly finding new things in the game! Glad none of the trailers spoil everything!

I ended up sending my friend the haunted version of “Beauty Looking Back”. She gave it back to me, so I gave it to another friend... he has yet to respond to my ghoulish tomfoolery.
