Hatred Has a Purpose

Hatred is the most powerful of the angers, and as we all know, it can be an extremely dangerous emotion. But there is a way to marshal the power of hatred for deep self-awareness, integration, and effective social justice work in the most troubled areas. I remember feeling hate towards my abusive stepfather… but he was violent towards me first so I hated his guts… you mentioned putting people in concentration camps and dehumanizing them… but people who were put in concentration camps didn’t do anything to the people who hated them… they were dehumanized and put in concentration camps for simply just being themselves… they didn’t do anything to be treated how they were treated… am I not understanding something? What am I missing?

Dehumanization is a form of hatred, and contempt. So when people are put into camps or categories of "less than human," that's hatred being enacted on a large scale. Actually, it's poorly understood and tragically acted out hatred being wielded by people who don't understand shadow work. Without the understanding of the shadow, hatred can be very dangerous, as we've all experienced to our horror. But with shadow work, people can mature and evolve. With shadow work, hatred can tell us exactly where we're broken and incomplete. Without it, we're dangerous to ourselves and others.

Thank you so much Karla. Your books “Language of emotions” & “the art of empathy” have been and still are irreplaceable tools in my life. The tools you’ve shared on interacting with the spectrum of emotions have been of immeasurable support to me and the people in my life. Your chapter on Hatred has helped me so deeply and I’m no longer a victim to it and instead I’m an empowered courageous man of truth. I can only say such a thing from truly looking at myself and facing hatred along with the accompanying emotions. Thank you for your guidance Karla. It is helping tremendously and my gratitude to you and your work is overflowing. Thank you Karla🦋☀️🌊

How are you supposed to "square" hatred when what you hate deserves your hatred, for example, pedophiles, serial killers, child murderers?

I get this question a lot in workshops on hatred and the shadow. The first thing to ask is" Is it hatred, or is it an understandable abhorrence of what occurred?" I did studies on violence, murder, crime, etc., to see what I could find, and I also taught in maximum security prisons, often to the very people we've been taught to see as monsters. I didn't find monsters. I found people whose ability to function was severely compromised, and whose decisions were too. I didn't find that hatred was necessary. For people who bring up someone everyone gates, such as Hitler (though he's admired by many), I ask them to write down specifically what they hate about him. This spotlight always relates to something disallowed in them. Who and what we hate speaks to things in us, even if the hate target is shared by others. What I've found is that even when everyone in a workshop hates Hitler (or child molesters, etc.), their reasons for hating are unique -- and instructive as to the shadow material they can work with.

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with us, for free no pay. This is a treasure to society. Your work has helped me more than I can say. Some of it by just being valudations of inner beliefs that I had and support me. This video was illuminating on something I needed to internalize to work with - dissolving of the ego structure in love attachment and the hatered cycles involved with it Healing my own inner child's enmeshment trauma injuries. Much more processing ahead - but this is a breakthrough. So thank you for being out there sharing your knowledge.

In healing my relationship with my mother, I came through a long period of rage and grief which moved into the most intense hatred possible with a non-stop death wish (we both hated each other). Ohhhhh it was difficult to really dive deep inside the hatred -- both so cold and so hot -- and find there myself and my most and her most vulnerable parts. Touching. Do the hatred work.

Most of my life i thought that i am angry but actually I was hateful. Realized it about two months ago. It was a bit of a surprise but also a relief. I have seen a lot of spiritual leaders talking about shadow work but they never explained more that "it's your shadow". Thank you for you wisdom. ❤❤❤

Hatred is so powerful, and shadow work is like full evolution in an afternoon! Shadow work is just amazing. There's a really good book on the shadow where a whole bunch of people explore shadow work from many different viewpoints. It's called Meeting the Shadow by Connie Zweig and Jeremiah Abrams. So good!

Robert's book s fabulous, and he's excerpted in Connie and Jeremiah's book. For me, Meeting the Shadow is wonderful because it includes small essays from dozens of people who have been doing their shadow work. It sort of connects you to an entire community and an entire tradition.

This was unusually good! I have found out that I have repressed hate and the associated rage. I have made the discovery several times over the years. And the rage that comes up is invariably about people, that didn't cause the raging wound that gave rise to it. Thanks!

My mum always said that hatred was such a bad thing and I always thought it was ridiculous. Now that I'm doing a personal research about hatred I found your video and let me say that it has just shocked me. I kinda felt angry and surprised at the same time, I kinda hated that you were right hahaha, I need to do a lot of shadow work bc I do hate a lot, but I have just understood that it doesn't make me stronger or better (as I thought). Thank you so much, Karla!

So the difference between rage & hatred is that hatred involves projections and rage does not?

  • @EmotionDynamics

    @EmotionDynamics

Hi Simon -- good questions! We've been talking about this a LOT at Empathy Academy, and we think that's a huge part of it. Rage can just be generalized -- you can be a raging bull and just be angry at everything. But hatred is a laser focus of rage at a specific person, group, or idea. And sometimes, rage is a way to set boundaries for a person who is overwhelmed, whereas hatred (when people project it outward) can be a completely boundaryless state where the person is exploding directly at someone, without any of the moderating influences of healthy shame. It's a big topic, and we revisit it every year in our DEI trainings.

Rage is like anger, hatred is a different (more intense) level altogether because of the collapse of boundaries (which should arise with anger or rage) ?

  • @simokn

Cool. I know we are "splitting hairs" here but I think it's fascinating to break it all down to minute details. What I understand is: hatred is a concentrated form of rage, directed at a specific target. And, rage is more immediate anger -- more of a physical-survival anger -- connected to the fight-freeze-or-flight response.

:) I'm not well read on these things, yet ... just attempting to understand them better, as they fascinate me too... sometimes i think our choice of words may not represent our understanding accurately ... I've pondered on these things for years! After watching the above video, i had to read more about you Karla! I've just read that Like you, i too experienced childhood trauma, was drawn to the metaphysical, then became more research oriented, and agnostic! Similar stories! I don't know if thats why your explanations makes the most sense so far, and if so, why. Emotions and the human mind is my fascination and passion ❤ Love that you do what you. The world needs more empaths❤

Possibly. I can't remember all of the differentiations, but we were thinking that rage is more diffuse, hot, and indirect, and tends to peter out, while hatred tends to be focused, dead-cold, and grows over time if the person doesn't know how to work with it.

Hi Karla, I just found yesterday the essay you wrote for the skeptic community a couple of years ago, I have been reading you blog, I used to be in the new age community and I can totally agree with you on some points, I feel a great amount of pain for leaving those beliefs, I have been using my anger to read and inform myself about everything, I did not know there were so many information, I am experiencing a lot of fear, because I am using my "human intellect" I guess you can understand what I mean, you get used not to ask, not to think and most important to trust god and the guru or in my case the " ascended masters". I think it is really hard to leave, to let go of those beautiful but naive ideas about reality, but it seems to me that the other side (skeptics and free thinkers ) are interested in fighting and fighting... I was fighting for so long against "demons, entities and bad energies" that I no longer want to continue putting myself here or there, us vs them, and this is the part where I find your blog really inspiring, I can totally imagine how hard it was for you to follow reason and let behind so many beliefs. I hope the hate I feel right now for religiosity and everything related with this topic is going to serve a purpose in my life. I just wanna thank you, it is good to feel I am not along with this.

Hello anme, and yes the hatred has a purpose, which is to make a very clear and hard separation between yourself and the ideas that were once a crucial part of your self-concept. It will fade, but it sort of needs to be present right now to help you protect yourself and build a new life without those influences. Yes, the skeptics and free thinkers as a whole aren't the people to go to when you're working with the depth of loss and rage; the problems I saw back in 2003 when I wrote that essay are still a unifying aspect of the culture; it's really not something that they want to change. I left, and haven't looked back. However, there are some awesome individual skeptics like Daniel Loxton, Jim Lippard, and Blake Smith, who know how to be mensches. It's hard to make such a sea change, and your emotions will need to help you, sometimes by being intense. Remember that this too shall pass.
