The barely existent civility between the Hatfields and McCoys reaches its breaking point when they fatally wound Anse's younger brother.
Season 1 Episode 2, 'Episode 2': When the McCoys murder Anse's younger brother, the Hatfields ride out to get bloody revenge. Soon, friends, neighbors, and outside forces join the feud, and all-out hostilities between the Hatfields and McCoys bring West Virginia and Kentucky to the brink of Civil War.

The Hatfields and the McCoys fought on different sides during the Civil War. When the war ended, tensions between the two families continued. A drunken brawl results in the death of a Hatfield at the hands of three McCoy boys. Although the McCoys are turned over to the local magistrate, the Hatfields take the law into their own hands and kill the boys. This begins an all-out bloody feud between the two families. Amidst the bloodshed, two lovers from the families try to build a relationship. The fighting ends when the heads of each family meet in the woods and ultimately decide to walk away peacefully.

    He was the Hatfield brother that broke up fights and never started one only to get knifed repeatedly into dying a slow death. No gentle-souled person alive deserves a fate like that.

    The Sheriff was right. The judge was wrong. The 6th amendment clearly states, "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed..."

    There were plenty of witnesses to the crime They never denied what they did. Seems like an open and shut case
