Not a beginner here, and I don't want to confuse the issue (and muscle memory for chord shapes is absolutely essential), but I did the C-G hop for years (and years!) until ...... I learned Gadd9! Ring finger on G of low E, pinky on G of high E. Helpful for getting used to using the pinky finger, too. If I'm playing a chord progression with C-G changes, I automatically opt for the Gadd9 there. Works great for quick, short G changes, too. My two cents worth, if it helps. Keep up your great teaching videos! They've been helpful! 🎶😊

What do you think of the trick Rikki Lindhome uses in her "Garfunkel and Oates" ditties: Lifting the index finger, moving the middle two fingers up together and dropping the pinkie. Making a three finger G Chord with an alternate choice of which three fingers to use.

P.S. I’m working on Bm right now. I didn’t think any chord could give me worse fits than F, but here’s Bm. Thanks for the refresher on muscle memory. I’m gonna do it.❤️😁
50 years ago when I was learning I stopped playing G that way. Hold C then lift fingers 2 & 3 up to G and your little finger is already hovering over the 3rd fret 1st string. (it gets stronger quickly) I never understood why people always play G the way you are showing. Same with Em I bet you all use fingers 1 & 2 for Em you should use fingers 2 & 3 as if you were playing E but don't use the 1st finger

OMG this video came at the perfect time. I'm starting to hate practicing. This C-G and D is driving me nuts. But just like your finger exercises, I think this is what I need. BTW, Someone also told me to gently brace the guitar with my strumming elbow. Not hard, just enough to take the strain from my fretting hand thumb. So now my thumb is used to steady my hand, but not to clamp the strings. My thumb never puts pressure on the neck unless I'm trying to make a barre chord. That's when everything falls apart lol.

So i keep coming back to this video and studying your fret hand and doing this exercise. I can literally go from C to G to Am without looking at the guitar, but the transition isnt smooth. I spent hours yesterday going from C to G to Am (tryimg to learn Simple man) and i woke up this morning with my finger tips shredded 😂😂. I think i took an 1/8 of an inch of meat off my finger tips 😂. Missing part of my finger tips this morning i found my hand naturally landing on C and Am. G i can also land without looking for the most part, but dang C to G is really difficult for me. I need to find a teacher in the upstate NY area that i can spend an hour a week with.

Here is what helped me learn the 3-finger G open chord shape. You can do it even without a guitar. With an open hand and straight fingers, bend your ring finger, then also bend your index and ring fingers. Make them a little bit parallel to your palm. There is your G chord shape. With practice, you can speed up the shape and use it with chord changes. With C chord shape, it's like your answering a telephone. I tried forming that C chape like answering a telephone without a guitar. I noticed also that changing between C and G chord is easier if you positioned your guitar a classical like angle

Hi Lauren, I understand why you have suggested placing the ring finger first when switching from G to C. However, I am in the habit of placing the index finger first and third finger last. I am usually left-handed but play guitar right-handed. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it, but regardless, do you recommend I try to change my habit to placing third finger first on C chord? I still consider myself mostly a beginner. Thanks!

I practice as much as I can at home, even copied or downloaded a few 3 chord (G D & C) songs. Your video has helped so much, I thank you for that, now I just need to practice your ‘thumb thing’, thanks for sharing your experience, Ron.

Yeah that works great too
Not a beginner here, and I don't want to confuse the issue (and muscle memory for chord shapes is absolutely essential), but I did the C-G hop for years (and years!) until ......

I am not familiar with that. But I am a fan of options.

I recently did a video on getting better sounding Barre chords but not the transitions.
damn, just realize that fretting things seperating without strumming is kinda best way to me
Here is what helped me learn the 3-finger G open chord shape.

Thanks!

This a very helpful lesson Lauren! I have been practicing this lately and the one thing that hinders me is pain on my forearm, and I have to stop and flex frequently. I start with my 3rd finger also and it helps me to place the G and C better (I have to kind of lean towards the neck of my guitar to form the C though).
