HASTILY MADE CLEVELAND TOURISM VIDEO
Ойын-сауық
#!/mikepolkjr
The Cleveland Tourism Board gave me 14 million dollars about 8 months ago to make a promotional video to bring people to Cleveland. As usual, I waited till the last minute and I ended up having to shoot and edit it in about an hour yesterday afternoon. I probably should have invested more time.

Have your 1000th like
"Cleveland has the flatness of Kansas, the drear of Seattle, the grime of Detroit, the coldness of Canada, the depression of Russia, and the industrial disrepair of Chernobyl. Its actually impressive how many lowlights Cleveland manages to pack into one location on earth simultaneously. The most positive thing about Cleveland is it has a big lake. But don't get excited because the city turned its waterfront into an airport. Not even their good airport, just a municipal airport for the 7 rich people in Cleveland to use. Cleveland is so good at being awful that it destroyed its #1 area of natural beauty with its #2 airport." - Daniel Tosh

My colleagues were winning trips to Hawaii, Dubai, all over the Caribbean, and finally, my name was drawn. I was SO EXCITED... where was I going?! Singapore? South Africa? Nope. I won a trip to Cleveland. And there wasn't even hotel included. Just airfare and tickets to the Rock Hall. Yay me.

There's an episode of Hogan's Heroes where they referenced Cleveland. If you don't know anything about that show, it was made in the 1960s and set in a German prison camp during WWII. In one episode, the prisoners were looking for a map for their escape and ran across a map of Cleveland. One prisoner stated they didn't know anyone who escaped to Cleveland and another answered, "not escaped to, escape from". Even in the 1960s Cleveland was so terrible that a show thought that people would rather be in a WWII German prison camp than that city.

Three things Cleveland should be remembered for: The Cuyahoga River Fire (22 June 1969) The river was so full of garbage, fumes, and crap that it eventually caught on fire. Railroad bridges near Republic Steel trapped debris in the river, causing it to pile up. Oil on the water added to its flammability. A flare tossed from an overpassing train likely provided the spark that ignited the debris. The fire lasted for less than a half hour. The flames reached five stories high and would eventually lead to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. (The EPA was literally formed because Cleveland is so damn dirty.) 10 Cent Beer night (June 4, 1974) A MLB game between Cleveland's baseball team the Indians (Now renamed to the Guardians due to its racist depiction of a Native American for a mascot) and the Texas Rangers, on this night all beer was only 10 cents. Each fan was given the choice of six beers per-purchase (Not per-person). As you can imagine letting baseball fans get hammered on dimes was not the best idea. It was summer, it was humid, and it was right in the middle of firework season. Firecrackers going off combined with the brewing tension between Indians and Rangers fans from the game before gave the entire stadium the feeling of an active warzone. Eventually fans became restless and starting doing things like running onto the field and stealing bases. A heavyset woman (Probably in her mid 40s, seriously she looks like somebody's mom.) ran across the field flashing the crowd. Then a man stripped of all his clothes ran across the field and slid into home base. Eventually a fan attacked one of the players and his entire team backed him up and then the battle began. The other team eventually joined the fight and came to the defense of the other team. Fans brought chains and knives and threw batteries at people. There was an entire group of naked people on the field and they had a designated place for all their clothes to be put in a pile. There were over 25,134 fans that attended the game, and only 50 security guards. Only nine arrests were made after the game. The game organizers were fired the next day. Balloonfest '86 (Sept. 27, 1986) As an attempt to make Cleveland look good, a nonprofit organization called United Way of Cleveland planned a balloon drop. This was also a slight attempt to break the world record of most balloons released at once, the previous record was held by Disneyland in Anaheim California. 1.5 million balloons were placed under a large net in the middle of Cleveland, the drop was scheduled for that day but was suggested that they do it another day due to the rain. But they didn't listen and the balloons were dropped. Now at first it did look pretty damn cool but over time the balloons came falling back down, the entire city was covered in stray balloons just wondering around. Eventually, a large portion of lake Erie was covered in balloons. Two fishermen, Raymond Broderick and Bernard Sulzer, who had gone out on September 26, were reported missing by their families on the day of the event. Rescuers spotted their boat anchored west of the Edgewater Park breakwall. A Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter crew had difficulties reaching the area because of the "asteroid field" of balloons. A search-and-rescue boat crew tried to spot the fishermen floating in the lake, but Guard officials said balloons in the water made it impossible to see whether anyone was in the lake. On September 29, the Coast Guard suspended its search. The fishermen's bodies subsequently washed ashore. The wife of one of the fishermen sued the United Way of Cleveland and the company that organized the balloon release for $3.2 million, and later settled on undisclosed terms. In the days following the event, many balloons were reported washed ashore on the Canadian side of Lake Erie causing water pollution. Some people had misconceptions about the environmental impact of balloon releases, thinking that "the balloons would reach an altitude where they popped and disintegrated." To this day, you can still find remnants of balloons all over the city of Cleveland.

i used to see "this guy" every day at one of the city's libraries. he'd always be standing, reading the day's paper with the paper resting in a window well, wearing a bandanna and listening to something with over-the-ear headphones. i haven't seen him since the pandemic started because the libraries have been closed and hope he's doing alright. this comment isn't a joke edit (april 14 2021): to those wanting an update: i probably won't be going back until may-june, and even then not on a regular basis, so my chances of seeing him if he's not there every day are low. last i checked, the library only allows you in for 1 hour at a time, and the time i would go was during a 2-hour window and he was always there. i'll update this no later than may-june, possibly earlier, but any real update when the library is open as normal so there's a stronger chance i'll see him will be later Edit (June 4): I'll visit the week of the 20th, probably later in the week Edit (June 24): didn't see him. sorry folks Edit (March 2022): I just wanted to relay my experience, like "hey, I did use to see 'this guy' and hope he's doing alright since things are crazy now" - if I see him I'll update this comment, but I'm not gonna go out of my way to get info on him.

CLEVELAND!!!
My best friend's dad showed this to us when we were in high school and we all loved it from the beginning. We sang it as loud as possible when we drove through Cleveland last year. It cracks me up every time I see it.

It was actually on accident. He was trying to invent the television, but he left all the parts on his workbench overnight and came back in the morning to find Cleveland there, instead.

@Dottlet1

@@johncam8420 I'm not sure about the city in particular, but people are usually stuck in Ohio economically. The cost of living is so cheap in many places; and the wages, while often very good for that cost of living, aren't usually amazing for saving to move away. And, very often, people get stuck into expensive habits of drug use, gambling, and other such things, because "there's nothing else to do". Though it varies from person to person. There's also family and obligations and stuff.

2023 and it's still funny, while also making me nostalgic. Plenty to trash Cleveland about, but has aesthetically great places around town and beyond. Grey slush may suck, but fall, first days of snow and early spring are beautiful.
And to think on one of my trips to the US I had a stopover in Minneapolis St Paul, and could have got to Cleveland in just 12 hours driving. Oh the regret!
I nearly pissed myself laughing at this! LOL
