Has the war in Ukraine given NATO new purpose? | Start Here

The war in Ukraine seems to have galvanised the NATO alliance, with a renewed focus on newer members along its eastern flank. In this special episode, Sandra Gathmann takes #AJStartHere on the road to Lithuania, and explains what’s happening and why.

The argument that NATO never should have pushed eastward ignores the fact that all those countries had to WANT TO JOIN. NATO did not force them to join. So why would they join NATO, except as protection from Russia and their apparent desire to reform the Soviet empire? Unless joining NATO is a requirement for joining the EU; I dunno about that.

It is not mandatory but the EU formed in 1992 by the Maastricht treaty already had eastern Europe expansion in mind, a sort of Fourth Reich without firing a shot. Former Russia had nothing to offer back then so easy land grabbing for the Brussel technocrats. All part of a masterplan. Question is who benefits from all this? Common people? LMAO.

Not just that. But also the fact that Nato will always have purpose when there is a risk of having some Dictatorship attempting to use nukes as some short of a means of extortion and threat on smaller or non nuclear nations. Soviet Russia is was not the only nuclear power on this planet, besides Putin's Russia has inherited those nukes. I don't say that organisations - and more so nations individually aren't able to make mistakes even with what they think of as good purposes. But also, the only way to affect for example Nato decisions to try and have it make right ones is from inside. And still - the fact remains - no nation should be allowed to just attack sovereign nations along it's borders, threaten them and make demands from them - or worse yet pull out that nuclear card either in use or simply to extort other nations into submission under their will. In other words, countries need to stay within their own borders unless attacked first and even then... well you all get the point. Nato has purpose even as something to keep the internal affairs of Europe stable - but most importantly it should be seen as that one organisation powerful enough to stand up to those potential bullies. The humanity in whole has gone too long by now going at each other's throats and as it seems that some of our prior organisations just can not fully be assured to keep wars from happening, then the weaker need a champion and what ever Nato has been before, it does not mean it can not or should not evolve into something better yet.

Russians thought when they invade Ukraine and approach to Kyiv, Zelenski would run and command structure of Ukraine would collapse, even before west can do anything about it. And it probably would, if Zelenski did that. An easy victory for Russia. But that did not happen, and an actor showed more courage compared to most career politicians. The moment he decided to stay and reinforce Kyiv, Russia lost its chance for a quick victory, and Ukraine used media quite well to make its case. Russia lost the claim that they `own` Ukraine and this was a `reaction` against NATO actions.

No Zelensky did not surrender indeed, he followed his masters orders very well. Now thousands and thousands of innocent citizen died, by the hands of russians and by the hands of their own (especially azov). Cities are being destroyed and it won't stop, it will only get worse. Only a fool (or a traitor) fights a war that he cannot win. You think a moral win will have a value when everything is dead? The only big loss that Russians will feel (and it will be big) is that their brothers (from Ukraine) will die for this stupid idea of trying to be a hero. Meanwhile children might die or at least will be left with no father and if NATO keeps poking their nose like they do right now, it might even escalate in a global conflict. You are delusional and ignorant, because you actually believe that the Russians were trying to kill civilians. They were not, but soon they might have to do it to prevent big losses. That day, real rockets and bombs will follow and they are not meant to just blow up a building. They are meant to delete whole cities/provinces at once. By the way, I hope you'll collect the courage to go volunteer and help the Ukrainians out if you are so touched by this event (which is also produced by your leaders). I guess eating popcorn and witnessing this war as a fan became a new thing this year. Everyone such a fan of this disgusting event, so supportive towards Ukrainians whilst they are dying but no courage to actually help.

Perhaps if the soviet Union had treated the former soviet state's cultural heritage with understanding and not eradication, these regions wouldn't be looking for a replacement identity to offset the legacy of the Soviet deportations, massacres, forced reeducations and cultural destruction that clearly still haunts them. The Hungarian uprising/massacre is still within my parents lifetime and not something they are willing to forgive or forget yet, if ever. Russian federation all too easily plays the victim, claiming Russophobia is a baseless invention by the west. Yet it was the Czechs, Poles, Hungarians, Chechens who suffered when the west had no involvement at all. The fact they still hold Stalin aloft as a great statesman should tell you all you need to know. A common thief who became one of the 20th centuries worst most paranoid mass murderers. Russia appears to have an inability to look inward whilst casting aspersions outward. Lenin was nothing to Lithuania. His revolution was against the Tsars in Moscow. So ask yourself why he was immortalised through statues erected in others nations long after his death. He did not fight a revolution in their countries. He is a symbol of a loss of independence to the former soviet nations, not a freedom fighter to their own cause or culture. The Soviet Union and Putins RF only knows how to impose itself against the peoples will. Its not about understanding the people, merely a land grab to project global power. Look at the Russian separatist regions, Transnistria for instance. Dirt poor relics of the 17th century in comparison to modern Poland and Lithuania. These countries want acceptance, not assimilation akin to a star trek Borg invasion.

Please - do yourself - and the world - a favour. Learn history which you so proudly demonstrate. Although Bandera once sided with SS troops - against the occupying Russia ("liberating" USSR) - at the end of the war he changed his stance and didn't side with either - fighting for the freedom of his own Ukraine. Stop proliferating lies, Kremlin's troll - and don't forget that the moment Putin believes his abiding trolls are suddenly obstacles on the road to his ego-mania goals and schizophrenia (like Stalin, like Ghadaffi, like bin Laden, like Hitler) - he will put a bullet in his trolls' heads as well. Leave Russia while you still can - as 400+ largest global companies (McDonalds, Volvo, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Boeing, Airbus, Visa, Mastercard, IKEA, BMW, Maersk Shipping, etc, etc) have already done in a matter of weeks.

Russians need to be honest about their history, the large number of Soviet communist officials who collaborated in Ukraine with the Nazis. Furthermore it was Russian empire pogroms which displaced the jews refugees into central Europe and seeded the conditions for Nazism. The origin of the blood libel and Protocols of Zion was the Russian Empire's propaganda service. Now Russians are the real Nazis, launching an unjust unwinnable war of genocide against a people with a Jewish leader.

China cannot attack a tiny island like taiwan because of fear of nato retaliation. Russia has not dared to encroach nato land or airspace as nato out produces and overpowers russian firepower by a long way.
