Has the classic Up Front been permanently decommissioned? What is the best card-based SUT wargame?
Ойындар
In an effort to explore the current card-based small unit tactical (SUT) wargame segment of our hobby, arguably originating with the classic Avalon Hill game of Up Front, I decided to conduct a Kilroy's Deep Dive (KDD) on the following three games in my collection that are currently available (Up Front has not been published* for almost 40 years):
+Warfighter: The WWII Tactical Combat Card Game (Dan Verssen Games)
+Undaunted: Normandy (Osprey Game)
+Point Blank: V is for Victory (Lock n' Load Publishing)
I compare their treatment of board/terrain, units/vehicles and use of actions/cards. Also, I provide MY** observations, impressions and thoughts, inter alia, on the rules, player aids, art/aesthetics, replayability, gameplay, solo v. multiplayer, complexity, simulation and overall assessment of the winner. You may be surprised.

Fantastic overview. Thanks so much, Robert. This was brilliant.

Thanks, I “commissioned” it from my oldest daughter (who also did my regular intro/outro) when she was 11, now I cannot get anything new, even when I beg . . . teenagers . . .
Some asked about Fields of Fire during the premiere; however, I do not own it (GMT are you listening) and frankly was intimidated by the rules when it first came out (I understand that they have gotten better with age). I really should try it -- but these three really scratch any itch I have in the card-based space (also D-Day Frontline, mentioned in these comments; but has not seen the table in years).

Fields of Fire is one of the best Solo only games I have played. It's one of the few that gives the player real agency.
From Osprey, Und. Stalingrad $120
Great comparison! Would love to see other videos like this (I know they take a l-o-n-g time to make). :)
Awesome highlighting of the progression of innovation in war games. Nicely done.
Awesome work!!!!
Nice video Kilroy. I have War fighter and Undaunted like them both a lot. WW2 2GM is a hidden Gem and deserves to be in the mix especially if you have the full Kickstarter bundle. I do like lock n load tactical, so I'm gonna give Point Blank ago after watching some vids!
Thanks I enjoyed this
Solid video, Kilroy. I already have Undaunted and Warfighter WWII, but I wanted to learn about Point Blank to see if I should scoop it up. I think you may have sold it on me. heh
I live in Canada 100 miles from Buffalo, New York. I pre-ordered this game months ago. Lock N Load says they started shipping this game to U.S. residents on September 3rd. Today is October 12th and I have yet to receive my copy of V is for Victory despite numerous requests to the firm's website. I am incredibly disappointed with the Customer Service at Lock N Load Publishing.
Do you use any apps to record on your phone or just use the built in photo recording app? Fantastic much needed video!

Just phone camera, so far
I prefer warfighter because the solo play and the buildup for a team. It feels more as a RPG because the bond you get with the team you can build. Ofcourse the airborne expansians i find the most fun. Point Blank is also great. Undaunted i dindnt like but thats only a opinion. It still can be a great game for alot peeps You made a fantastic overview for the three games.
I watched hoping you'd compare them to Up Front and see if they dethroned the King. I did not see the comparison made. The title of the video is a bit misleading I thnk. Otherwise the comparison video of these 3 games against themselves is great! Thank you.

Excellent point; but here is my logic (as flawed as it may be). I was only focusing on games in my collection that are available and possible took a bit of teaser-license. I decided to reference Up Front as many still consider it the standard to compare all WWII card-based games even though it has not been available for several decade, as attempt to put these games into context. As I do not currently own a copy of Up Front and believe focusing on what is actually readily available carries more weight and relevance, I thought these three games were worthy of comment under the umbrella of what Up Front represents (one of the earliest card-based war games). If someone wants to send me a copy of Up Front, I would be happy, dare I say obliged, to re-consider this entire endeavor and post a new (or supplemental) video.

A straight reprint (with a few errata fixes) of Up Front is available from Wargame Vault. Very pleased with the components. They can’t print counters, but the little cards they provide to replace them are very convenient to use.
Not even close. Up Front STILL trumps all these other games.

Have you played point blank?

@@StackingLimit Yes, I own all of these games. While I enjoy them, I think Up Front is better than all of the games in this video. Outside of the dated artwork, Up Front is a classic.

What I don't like about Up Front is the way terrain disappears when you go back. Where do the buildings go?

@@MegaParillo they got blown up , the battlefield's a bad place to go look about 👍✍️🤗
Have you tried D-Day Frontline from DVG?
@KWHgames
Жыл бұрын
Yes, and I own it. I considered covering it, as it fits into this comparison analysis; however, as it is not generally available (DVG did not continue it after the original release and I believe moved their focus to the development of Warfighter) I limited it to these three. I also considered Spearpoint 1943 (own/played); but it is more of a pure card-game than card-based (whatever that means) and this was over an hour with the three, so . . .
Do you think that warfighter could also use a deck of dice?
@KWHgames

I am fine with dice (although they are not good to me) and do not believe a dice-deck adds anything IMHO.
