From what I heard, you are allowed to open specific apps on the cover screen and there is a setting in the "labs" section to allow non optimized apps as well.

@kb24theMVP They get review units early and film before launch. They didn't look at other reviewers either out of respect to their own unfiltered opinions, or this was filmed before embargo lifted. Since they only knew what the manufacturer told them, they must not have gone searching through the settings. Sometimes, the spec sheet is all they have over a phone.

So you have to make an effort to use it like a normal phone where as with the razer plus it just works? You have to be pretty brand loyal to defend a anti consumer choice like that. Making the consumer do the work to make something work when the razer just works. Ya no.
I generally like these videos, and the host is really nice, but some details have been slipping past the team lately. Every other hands on video I've seen mentions the fact that you can officially use any app on the cover screen using Labs+Good Lock, yet Jake complained about that twice.
@doomy_doomy2225

Just look at the razer. The razer just works without having to do extra work. Why would a consumer want to do extra work because they were too lazy to just make it work without effort. Ya think the average consumer will ever do that? No. The complaints are valid.

@@leonro It's a little confusing due to staggered release dates, but IMHO going by release year isn't a good method as Pixels are released in October while the equivalent Samsungs are released in Feb. e.g. the Pixel 7 which was released in Oct 2022 will stop at Android 16. But the S23 which was released just four months later will stop at Android 17. So for nearly this whole year so far, if you bought a flagship Samsung instead of a flagship Pixel, you'd be getting an extra major version update over the Pixel. There is only the four-month window between Oct and Feb where buying a flagship Pixel would get you an extra major version update over a flagship Samsung.

Apple still supports the iPhone 7, which came out 7 years ago. The fact that a phone that has many known defects from the manufacturer, that costs nearly, or more than twice the cost of a flagship phone is not supported to the same degree as the direct competitor is fucking laughable. Samsung repairs are also consistently more expensive, take longer, have fewer repair locations, and are just generally more inconvenient in the case of data loss (iCloud is better than any data backup system Google or Samsung provides, objectively, full stop there is no comparison) which makes it clear that these foldable phones are just a stupid choice unless you have more money than you know what to do with. The few software features that Samsung offers do not outweigh the massive price premium of the foldable phones. It's bordering on a scam considering the screen protector is known to regularly peel away from the LCD and then cause damage to the LCD when folded, resulting in damage that the warranty does not cover.

@@A_Balanced_Breakfast Well I respectfully disagee regarding the cloud option. Samsung Cloud offers 15GB of free storage, while iCloud only offers 5GB of free storage. Samsung Cloud is compatible with Android, iOS, and Windows devices, while iCloud is only compatible with Apple devices. Samsung Cloud allows you to upload files up to 100GB in size, while iCloud only allows you to upload files up to 50GB in size. Samsung Cloud keeps a 30-day history of your files, so you can restore previous versions if necessary. iCloud only keeps a 10-day history of your files. The only best feature I like about iCloud is iCloud is generally considered to be more secure than Samsung Cloud. This is because iCloud uses end-to-end encryption, which means that your data is encrypted on your device before it's sent to iCloud. I think Samsung is also working on the encryption part. speaking of foldables, a foldable phone can be both a phone and a tablet, which can be very convenient. You can fold it up and put it in your pocket when you're not using it, and then unfold it when you need a larger screen. An iPhone cannot do that till now. A foldable phone can be great for productivity. You can use the larger screen to multitask, or to work on projects that require more space. I am yet to see any iPhone doing "proper" mutitasking. If you say no one does multitasking, you're in a group similar to Apple cult. Also Foldable phones are a new technology, and they're still in their early stages of development. If you're interested in new technology and want to be on the cutting edge, then a foldable phone might be worth the price. Wait till Apple comes with a foldable and see how it woos the market because of its clever "Marketing strategy" Also the iPhone 7 with latest iOS will be dog slow in terms of performance.
can't believe it took Short Circuit this many folding smartphone reviews to realise that the form factor is good for small pockets

There is a way to use (almost) any app on the front screen but it needs some setting up first. But all is available in the galaxy store.

did you remember to take off all the packaging this time?
It's thicker but its also smaller vertical space wise. Like my phone wont fit in my jeans pocket lengthwise but this will even if its thicker because its half the length. It wont fall off because its inside the pocket so i can understand why people would gravitate to this form factor.
Once more, regarding Security Updates: As it is now mandatory by E.U. law for smartphone manufacturers to provide security updates for at least 5 years, you can be pretty much 100% sure that the same will be true for all the other markets as well, as there's no reason not to push those updates if you have to provide them anyways.
@jomeyqmalone
11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately there are reasons. Validating and getting the updates approved by each country and each carrier within that country is possibly the biggest hurdle to releasing updates for many companies. And if you think the unlocked versions of phones might get the update sooner than the carrier models, in the US is been just the opposite in my experience, because the unlocked version update has to be approved by ALL the major carriers, and usually lags far behind the updates for carrier specific versions
What about fold5? linus's opinion is important to me. His previous note9 that he hadn't replaced in many years made me happy as an Apple fanboy. Although he is now on the fold3, the heat of the fold3's 888 processor turned me off and the 3's under screen camera is just too easy to gaze at. Overall, I'm looking forward to Linus reviewing the fold5. if he gives the fold5 a favorable review, I'll be able to go many years without replacing my phone and save a ton of money.😂
samsung's premium phone such as s, z series they promised of 4 years of major update and 5 years of security update which is one year more than what google does for pixel line up. for most of a series they support 3 major and 4 security

We've reached the point where the external screen is bigger and higher res than my first android phone (Acer Liquid E) Guess I shouldn't be surprised. Smart watches blew past it in other specs a long time ago
It may have been different in-person, but in this video there was a clear difference in sound quality between the 4 and 5. The 5 was not as tinny or echoe-y as the 4. But as far as flip style phones, it has to be the best option for that form factor.
Make sure to get Linus hosting for the Fold5. I wanna see what fun dbrand cooks up for him there🤣🤣🤣
I see some downsides to a foldable. The bulkiness is 1 thing to take into consideration, the longevity of the screen is also another thing you should think of... There's also not as much space for battery, since you either use 2 smaller batteries, or 1 battery that only goes on half of the phone, with the external display on the other half. Honestly just seems like a fun gimmick to me.
All I want to know is if it can be programmed to do the start trek communicator sound when flipped open. If it does not, I'm not interested.
Polish channel (but in english) Mrkeybrd tested the hinge, they manually flipped it over 400K times, even underwater, with sand, flour with sugar and eggs, it's a good hinge. Motorola died at 126K...
Gotta say, I got the Rzer + folding phone and I almost never open the phone. The cover screen is more than good enough for what I use a phone for, and the best part is that I can put it in my shirt pocket.

Honestly, this is the most fun and interesting phone I've had in a very long time. Seems obvious but: you get a normal slab phone, so no big deal there, but you also get a compact screen to use more minimally as you wish (starting podcasts, checking messages etc...). It's definitely reduced my screen time, and has added a little quirk into my life. Don't think I'm going back to a slab phone any time soon. Only downside: no zoom camera. Not a huge deal, but if you take full advantage of the multiple cameras on flagship phones, you'll definitely notice the fewer lenses
I got a flip 3 certified refurbished excellent for $320 a couple weeks ago and im not sure Id go back to a regular phone. The form factor is perfect for me and i cant wait to get the flip 5 for $350 in 2 years
Should note you can technically put any app you want on the cover screen after you install some password app or something
“You just doubled its thickness.” “No, I made it smaller.”
there is literally an app in the app store that is made by Samsung so that you can launch any app on the cover screen, doing even 5 seconds of research or watching the first 20 seconds of another video would have shown you that, it really makes me wonder how thorough the performance testing is if you missed this obvious detail.
Preordered and it's coming early! I do hope they ass support on the flex screen for other chat apps such as Teams for when i'm working.
"The performance issues will probably be solved over time". Yeah, still waiting for those to be resolved on my S22 Ultra (Exynos)....
I think the cover screen should be able to go on low-refresh-rate. You probably use this as an always-on-display and this would increase the battery life significantly if you use sth like the clock on it
My best friend recently got the flip 5 and loves it. She’s able to fit more stuff in her mini purse thanks to that form factor. She also said she likes being able to do light tasks on the cover display, and that helps her not get so easily sucked into using her phone for hours.

Thanks for pointing out what basically no other reviewers did in regards to the Razr's cover display. Its a marketing gimmick and a spec sheet tick. They just wanted to claim they had the most diagonal space even if its taken up in the edge by cameras. In full screen mode you're losing half an app's navigation panel, how is that acceptable? If you force a square aspect ratio on the Razr to have useable apps, the working area is considerably smaller than the Z Flip5's.
Hey kinda odd idea, is there a way to make a solid case for the flip series? What I mean is if someone gets unlucky and their screen begins to crack, they could extend the phones life by putting it in a solid case. I made the mistake of getting a second hand z flip 3, and now I'm afraid to close the phone as my screen has slight cracks forming on the fold I still really like the phone, but I can't afford to replace it, and I figured having an option to turn it into an oddly longer phone with a strong solid case and screen protector is better than having it go to E-Waste cause its own feature broke itself lol.

Have they improved the "smile" at all? because my Fold 4 (functionally identical hinge to the flip 4) isn't even a year old and it requires concerning amounts of force to make it open all the way flat. I work a clean job and all my hobbies are indoors, so I haven't even gotten the thing dirty to gum up the hinge. it's actually just kinda ass now.

I'll just never get the appeal of flip touch screen phones outside of it just being different for the sake of being different, lol. before they had a full outside screen i'd agree but now it's really useful. The smaller form factor makes the device much easier to handle when on the go since it fits perfectly in one hand and all UI elements can be used with one thumb. No more dual wielding the phone to navigate it, no more balancing of a huge glass slab, easier to stow away and it uses less battery when on the outside screen (though that point is kinda lessened by flip phones having smaller batteries)

Obviously everyones experience is different, but as the owner of a Fold 3 I can throw in my personal experience that for me, it's actually been more durable than all my previous phones combined. Both my S8 and S10 finished up with shattered screens, even with a good case, from corner drops. The Fold has been dropped countless times, often landing in ways that you would assume would cause a bad screen break, and apart from some minor scratches on the corners, both screens have held up fine and overall the phone is still working as if it were new. Definitely worth it for me, i'd advise that if you are interested about getting a folding phone you look at some other discussions and guage how well you believe a device will hold up when you daily drive it.

I got the Flip 3 just because I knew if I got one from Motorola it would be alot harder fighting them in repairs than it would be Samsung for when it inevitably does break. I like competition, but Motorola's repair services are not great.
If they made the front display just 0.1 inch bigger, then it's the same size as an iPhone 4S Retina screen....
I hope Bell covers the razr. Motorola don't get the love they deserve
Im sorry but why are we undermining the Motorola razr ultra here, it has LTPO display on both inside and outside, both high refresh rate, actually has a dust resistance rating, bigger battery, faster charging. Only downset is the sd 8+ gen 1 chipset in it. Which I feel is better optimised by now.
I'll buy one of these as soon as they add an SD card slot.
Hope you make a review in Techno phones like the SPARK 10
Still waiting for the crease to be solved and for the cameras to get closer to the S series.

The crease really only is a problem when watching reviews. When you're using the phone it's not something you really think about unless you're looking for it.

As for your first one, it’s not possible and it’s a nonesense complaint, as for your second one it’s literally not physically possible.
I've never been a fan of the flip phones, liked the Tmobile Sidekick, or the Sony Ericsson phones a lot. My sister and father had the motorola razr phones but I'm not an Android fan. I had a samsung galaxy 5 or something and it was constantly freezing on me that I had to take my cover and my case off and then the battery and all that several times so I went back to Iphone, they never glitch or freeze on me so it was an easy choice for me. I hated having to do that with the Samsung phone so if Iphone has a flip phone version maybe but never Android again for me no thank you.
