HAS MY BORE SCORE PORSCHE CAYMAN 987 S BEEN FIXED? | 987.1 S Bore Score Rebuild |

Update on my rebuild of my Porsche Cayman 987.1 S 3.4 with bore scoring. I have only owned this car just over a year when symptoms of the dreaded bore score started to show, it started with heavy oil use followed by the dreaded bore score noise. This is my story on the rebuild process where I show what it is really like to own a 15 year old Porsche Cayman S.
Please be aware my Cayman 987 was driving normally, making no noises or even burning oil 3 months prior to this. Bore scoring can affect any car regardless of how well it has been looked after. This video series showing the rebuild will no doubt help somebody that is thinking of buying one of these amazing yet potentially problematic Porsche sportscars.
My Cayman S seems to be so popular on my channel, the comment section went a little crazy last time I did a video and I thought I needed to update you on what my plans are now I have read them and where I am going to take the channel.
Those of you who follow the channel regularly will know I have owned my Porsche Cayman 987 gen 1 for around a year and have had no issues with it so far but over the last few weeks if has developed some less than ideal symptoms that most Porsche owners would run for the hills upon hearing.
I have always said I wanted to bring these videos to youtube to document my ownership experience of my porsche cayman s and bring you along with me for any modifications, upgrades, repairs and anything that comes with owning a 987.1 Porsche. This could not be any more true today as I am sharing with you the first in a series of videos about this latest engine issue and what i am going to do to first, investigate it and second how I am going to overcome the problem. If you own a Porsche, a porsche cayman or looking to buy one then please be sure to hit that subscribe button and follow this new series of videos as I am sure you will find it helpfull in some way.
If you are a regular viewer of this channel, thank you so much for coming back time and time again and helping the channel grow at a rate I could never have imagined. Congratulations on getting the Cayman back Joe , they are brilliant cars to drive . I agree with you that the bore scoring issue is a bigger issue than some would have you believe . Here is my story for those interested . I purchased a low mileage 987 .1 Cayman S around 4 months ago . The car had done 32,000 , full service history etc . After owning the car for a few weeks I noticed it was using oil , I started monitoring the oil consumption and realised it was using one litre of Mobil one every 700 miles . I looked into this on the forums / Porsche club etc , there was so much conflicting information and advice . Eventually I took the car back to the dealer as it had 3 months warranty . I was told by the dealer that there was nothing wrong with it , at this point I decided to take it into a independent Porsche specialist . To cut a long painful story short the Porsche specialist did a bore scope and found severe scoring on cylinders 4,5 and 6 . I did manage to get my money back from the dealer . I looked at another 2 low mileage 987.1 after this , a 40,000 mile example and a 45,000 mile example , I had them both inspected and both had bore scoring on 4,5 and 6 . I decided after this to go down the 987.2 route . Again I found a low mileage example and had the engine inspected . This time thankfully all clear . Keep up the great videos Joe .

If the car dealership you got it from had any ethical responsibility they should pay something towards your bill regardless if they knew or did not know, as you only had it for less than a year. Happy for you that you've got your car repaired, now you can get out and wear those Michelin's out before they go off. I've been watching a few videos about bore scoring on the Cayman recently, with the most interesting from a car dealer who only sells Porsche's. He stated that the way they are warmed up from cold (if at all) and how they are driven until properly warm can contribute to bore scoring. Although I suppose you know all this already. One thing he did say, which I have also heard elsewhere is that the oil used by Porsche as standard is too light, with the oil that is recommended by his favourite engine repairer is Millers Nanotech at 5W/40 which works much better at looking after the cylinder walls. So, the question is, what brand and weight oil went into your engine after the rebuild?

  • @JoeTalksCars

    @JoeTalksCars

    2 жыл бұрын

    It’s got 5w40 in it now and will continue to have that. Yeah I warm it while driving and not idling. I also rev it out and drive it properly when warm. I heard when they are not properly driven it can cause it.

    @@aboyandhisdog Hi Tom, the brief explanation I had was that E10 is lower octane and is less efficient overall, therefore less mpg and therefore an increased air fuel mixture required vs an equivalent engine running on E5 . More fuel = greater risk of oil being washed off the bores......might be nonsense but hey

  • @aboyandhisdog

    @aboyandhisdog

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@simonbottomley6484 I get it - there is a lot of information out there, but not all of it reliable. Ethanol has about 70% the energy of straight gas so figure that 10% of your gas is running at 70% energy which translates to a 3% decrease in mileage. A change I doubt most would ever notice. As to octane...totally unrelated to ethanol. The equivalent octane rating of, say, 93RON is exactly the same whether the fuel is E10, E5, or straight gas. I'm not a big fan of ethanol - I feel it is just a give-away to Big Ag, and is not worth the energy it takes to produce it, but it isn't quite the horror show for our engines that a lot of people think it is. That said, for a Porsche that is prone to the bore score issues, I do run a fuel additive like Lucas, or Sea Foam in every tank to help keep the fuel system clean and lubed!

A car i would strongly reccomend if you can budget for such a car. Its the closest thing i have driven to the e46 m3 in terms of 'raw driver experience'. And just fyi, my 2.7 cayman 981 has been spot on. In 4 years of ownership, barring one issue which was my fault really, and cost me £300 all in to sort its not put a foot wrong. Honestly if you could try test driving one im pretty sure tou will end up going for one. If you don't then its no biggie because that e46 m3 was an absolute machine!

    Joe, you have just spent a ton of money on your rebuild, please take care of it with the right fuel. I suggest you avoid E10. There is some very good research on KZread regarding 99 Premium being much better in you Porsche. Whilst people often avoid it because of price, it’s less expensive than you think. Did you know fuel consumption with E10 is worse in all cars than E5 I.e. 99. In fact not all E5 contains that much ethanol. That’s the max amount in there. Some contain non at all. I have heard some Esso 99 has non. If you are a member/or join Porsche Club GB you can get a free if charge “agency” type fuel card and a 6 p per litre discount on Esso 99. (I am just a user of the agency card and I have no other association with it). The 99 is cleaner, with better fuel consumption and performance according to my research and experience. Be kind to your very expensive engine. Don’t use E10. Enjoy your Cayman.
