The Untold Truth of Buying an iPhone

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I investigate and unpack the truth about buying an iPhone, and what that means for my and other Apple users' quality of life and, ultimately, our bank accounts!
I bought my first iPhone in 2007. Fast-forward to now and I find myself looking back, ponderingly, on the last 17 to 18 years and wondering: 'how much of my hard-earned money have I spent on Apple products since then? And how did THAT happen?'. This video is NOT an Apple-bashing. It's an exploration of my journey through the Apple Universe, asking the ultimate question: was it worth it?
[Update: The Apple Watch was actually first launched in 2015. My bad!]

Have we got the iPhone or the Android owners in the house? 😅 In all seriousness though, this one's for the long-term viewers of my channel, who have diligently watched my 'switching to android' videos, every single time I release one! So, tell me, honestly, which Android phone do YOU think is better than the iPhone?

Apple has won if you completely ignore the 2 largest markets in the World: India and China ... where Apple can't seem to sell much. And if you look into South America (where I moved recently), I don't see many Apple products here in Brazil (probably due to the fact that an iPhone here costs $2000 due to import taxes while average income is barely around $500). Apple seems to dominate mostly in the US and be 50/50 in Europe (where I am from). In my opinion, thinking that Apple dominates is a very narrow (UK + US) point of view but I might be wrong and it would be interesting to compare that point of view with actual sales numbers worldwide (which I admit I didn't do).

My editor used to live in Brazil. I remember trying to get a Macbook Pro to him - INSANELY expensive to buy. I even looked at buying one here and jumping on a plane to give it to him in person. Madness. I believe Android has wider market share worldwide, since there are hundreds of companies that make phones of all shapes / sizes / budgets. But then again, Apple is the 2nd most valuable company in the entire world. Under Microsoft I think? So where Android revenue is split between thousands of devices and manufacturers. Apple takes all of the iPhone revenue. So I guess it just depends on how your frame the 'Who's won'. By valuation, number of devices sold. Android as a whole, or the individual companies making Android devices etc! Appreciate you watching and commenting man, I hope you enjoyed the vid :)

@@PeteMatheson That is definitely an interesting way to look at it. Let's say that as a company they have won, but as an ecosystem they have "lost". I mean lost as not dominating any market but clearly we can't say they are loosers since at a whole, they are a huge contender in any of those markets. But if they stay as closed and pricey as they are today, I can see them losing market shares over time. That might be where the EU is helping them despite it not being the goal. By forcing them to open a little bit, it might be bad short-term but I think it will strengthen their position long-term. There are so many things we can speculate on but only time will tell :)

@TechDaddyFr ---- The key point is what you said in the last line of your comment. One must look at actual sales numbers. The quick version is that Apple ships 20% of worldwide phones (same as Samsung), they make 60% of the revenue (net sales) and make 80% of the profits in the entire market. The first number (units) that most people look at are phony and published by IDC or Counterpoint. The revenue and profits are exact and issued by the various manufacturing companies. Also the number of units are NOT sales, but rather shipments. Sales in any company are always reported as money not units. The companies that do the shipment reports do not have access to 100% of the data, they are estimating and sometimes off wildly. Getting back to "has Apple already won" then. In my opinion it is yes. There are many reasons but most importantly by being more profitable they can spend lavish amounts on R&D and other companies can't. The innovation in the market depends upon R&D. When one looks at the real numbers, it's not a close race. Apple won years ago.

@TechDaddyFr ---- Wanted to mention something unrelated to my previous comment. You said "if you completely ignore the 2 largest markets India and China". In India Apple is quite small. The Indian government forced them build manufacturing facilities before the could build Apple stores and sell at decent prices, but it is growing at a rapid rate. However in China they are extremely successful. I'll compare Apple sales to Huawei sales to illustrate this: Huawei is the largest Chinese consumer tech company. Of the company sales 67% are in the Chinese market. The total of consumer sales for Huawei was 35 billion usd. So 67% of that is Chinese consumer sales of 23.5 billion usd. In the case of Apple they reported 72.5 billion in China sales for 2023. Apple is dominant in high-end tech which sells extremely well in urban China. Huawei is very strong selling low-end tech to people in rural China.

the only reason they haven’t monopolised China is because WeChat is all you need on your device. So the buyers don’t buy a phone based on the OS compatibility but on the actual phone features.

My first smartphone was the iPhone 3GS, then a variety of Android phones, until I reached the original iPhone SE. That was my last iPhone because IPhone simply weren't capable of what I wanted to do but that may change. One of the things that has kept me on Android is the ease of emulation but that is changing now that I don't have to jump though hoops for emulators on Apple devices. I think you are overestimating the 'gateway drug' idea. That near 90% iPhone stat comes from the USA, in the rest of the world Android is far in the lead.

@@PeteMatheson There are a lot of Android manufacturers but that explains its popularity outside the US. iPhones have to be sold at the price Apple say they have to. Anyone can make an Android phone and sell it for any price. I'd be interested if with the cost of living crisis going on if Apple can hold that huge market share in the US.

A+ for video production Pete! You have put together a great team. 80% of Americans have an iPhone so I’m not surprised such a high percentage of teenagers in the US are iPhone users - because their mums and dads have iPhones… and Apple’s marketing in recent years really has been aimed at youth/young adults on social media. But here in Australia it’s split evenly at 50/50 iPhone and Android users and in Asian countries it’s predominantly Android. Parents will likely buy their kids the budget version of what they’re using. Also, I’m very curious (as I am every year) about the iPhone 16… can they win me back from Samsung?

It is so important that just recently has Samsung and google caught on and try to make their own ecosystems. The only problem is that they all have to depend on an outside entity for software or hardware. I think the mistake that people make is can Apple make the iPhone with all the features that Samsung does….yes but like you stated they focus on the whole package. If one upgrades to the newest iPhone every year, the new stuff is minuscule. But if one upgrades from an iPhone 13 or older to the upcoming iPhone 16 (or pro/pro max), the new features will be more present in their daily lives.

I don't know why but my macbook just doesn't connect seamlessly and easily when I tether with my iPhone. It takes about 2 minutes for my mac to detect my iPhone hotspot! This has been the same since I started using iPhone XS Max to my current iPhone 15 Pro Max and after the 3 recent macbook Air iterations. What's ironic is that my macbook tethers seamlessly easy with an android Pixel phone!

I've always been into tech watching Star Trek as a kid, etc. I remember when the original iPhone came out. I could have afforded the $400 or whatever, but I just thought it was dumb at the time to spend $400 on a phone when I didn't do much calling, and very little texting. I probably would still be using a cheap flip phone if they didn't make you upgrade to a smartphone back when they did away with 3G.

The fact that iPhone has up to 10 years of a head start on all of the other phones and ecosystems, also exactly the advantage those other phones have. There are certain core UI things that Apple would love to change about the iPhone but can't now because their user base is too big. Things that Samsung and Google have been able to fix because their developers got to use an iPhone for years and learn exactly what should be changed.

I think you overestimate the number of people who are that deep into Apple even in the US. Let's not ignore the millions and millions of US citizens who quite literally just have an iPhone and possibly some earbuds as their current devices (windows PC at home). Switching phone OS is incredibly easy to the point that I've done it four times in the last year. I use my airpods no matter what phone i have. I think the gap for most iPhone users is actually quite small and my prediction is that Apple is going to find that out in the next couple years.

"Does it matter whether you buy and iPhone or not." Yes. Yes it does. I work in the film industry and about 95% of my professional work contacts use iPhone. For some industries, you either use iPhone or get left behind. Granted, there are those that use android, but not a SINGLE person that a POC for work is on Android. I started off Android; I even had a Z Fold 4 which I then gave to my brother. The only reason why I stay with Apple is because of how encroaching it is in the higher life of American society. I want to reach that American Dream...unfortunately, it's hand and hand with Apple.

I switched from Apple around 8 or more times ... in the end i just ended coming back , so i decided , no more switching , if something grabs my eyes.. well i will just ignore it , it will always be the same. Like the Apple watch , it is the best watch , no matter what others tell you , yes there are watches with batteries that will last you longer that 30 days but the Apple Watch , is the one that will give you better sensor , vibration and health data. I had from Galaxy watch 3 to 6 and Pixel watch 1 , Huawei Watch and the Xiaomi fit bit , nothing comes close. I understand that for some people battery and workout is most important . People that need to keep track on their health and pair their watch with medical devices like Qardio and Sibionics for blood sugar , will need Apple , since nothing else works with those devices , sure there are some apps and devices that work with Android and the Wear OS , however i found that 98% times , it either does not show the result and you will need to take a test again or it shows it but will give a false reading , like giving you 14 blood sugar when you have 8 , this is very dangerous. So yeah , i think Apple is better.

After buying it p, I understand now why people love the apple products. After this I bought my very first MacBook Pro late 2008. It changed my view to apple completely (positiv way).
