I am 70 and I have loved this movie since I first saw it as a child. Elwood is indeed innocence, but innocence learned. "...well for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.", and "I always have a wonderful time, wherever I am, whomever I'm with" are things that he has learned. They are still guidelines for my life. I'm glad you have this film in your life. The more you watch this film the more you will love it.

I've loved this movie since I was a kid, my mom was a huge Jimmy Stewart fan. And I've seen it many times but it honestly never even occurred to me that when, at the end, Harvey stays with Dr. Chumley, then moments later comes back to Elwood, that Harvey had stopped time to take Dr. Chumley to Akron! 😯 That makes total sense! I always thought he just changed his mind in minutes. Wow, that makes it an even happier ending, thanks for that insight. 👍

Trivia: This movie was a favorite of John Landis, director and co-writer of The Blues Brothers. Elwood Blues was likely named as a salute. Also, in The Shawshank Redemption, Andy says that the "imaginary person" he created the false identity for in order to do the money laudering for the warden was a "second cousin to Harvey the Rabbit".

@@zimjun7 As I had stated, my stepfather married my mom when I was 21. He had four kids, who always had their hand out, even though they were older than me. My stepfather and I had a bond in that we were both Marines. The Marines teach you certain values, such as personal reliance. My step sister and I had both car accidents in the same week. I went and got car parts and personally fixed the damage to my car. My step sister, who had nearly identical damage to her car asked her dad for money to have someone else to fix it. He referred her to me. In response, she never spoke to me again. After that incident, he and I grew closer and his kids became distant to him. When I started college a couple of years later he would surprise me by occasionally calling me over and giving me a hundred bucks (starving college kids always need money and I'm sure he understood that as I worked my way through college and I never asked anyone for money). When he developed cancer he asked that I stay away as he didn't want me to see him waste away and he wanted me to remember him as he was. I respected his wishes. My one regret is that I wish I could have spent more time with him (when he was healthy). He was the father figure I needed and although he never said it out loud I know he was proud of me.

It's a Wonderful Life was Mr. Stewart's first movie after serving as a Army Air Corp bomber pilot in WWII European Theater. His emotional acting came in part from the depths of his experience in the war. There is a picture floating around the internet that showed him entering service and a picture of him after his service. You see a happen young man going in and a man who has been worn down by the worse that comes of war coming out. In Harvey, his appearance is much like his before picture, for some who served time maybe a healer.

Promoted from private to colonel in 4 years during his war time service. 3. Total service 26 years (1942-1968) retired as a Brig. General. To the public he was the movie star, but as a citizen he distinguished himself by his long service in the military. A military service that was all volunteer, you have to respect that.

Thumb Up #574! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️ Notes: You two make me miss my college life, because I had a roommate whose fiancée was from the Philippines! 😊 This movie is one of my all-time favorites! When I was a boy, James Stewart's television series was still on. It was in color too! We got to see Harvey too! I saw that before I finally got to see the movie. 🐰 I remember being in a forum and one of the members used "Pooka" as his screen name in honor of "Harvey". His avatar was the color version from the series. James Stewart would be a guest on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" but he was called "Jimmy". He would debut his poetry on Johnny's show. As well as his paintings. Stewart and Carson both served in the military. Carson was the lower ranking one as a lieutenant in the Navy, while Stewart was a military pilot in the Army. Carson's sidekick, Ed, outranked them both though, as a brigadier general in the Army! 🫡

Alfred Hitchcock had a few good ones back in the day. The original Dr WHO series started back in the 50s. Bunch of good stuff back then. I've been looking forward to seeing your reaction to this movie since you announced you were doing it a week ago. Such a great movie and so few have done it. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE came out 4 years earlier by the way in 1946, since you were wondering. And you apprently don't don't remember but you've seen this movie referenced twice already in movies you've already seen. In SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION Andy describes Randall Stevens, the person he made in his bank fraud scheme as second cousin to Harvey the rabbit. And in FIELD OF DREAMS this movie was used as a plot device to show how messed up Ray was initially about hearing voices in his cornfield. In the scene his daughter is watching the movie on a TV set and he turns it off telling her to stop watching it, the man in the movie isn't funny he says. the man is sick. And everyone watching that movie back then understood the reference because everyoje back then knew the movie. It is that beloved. But now to comp[lete the trifecta you need to see the other great movie from 20 years ago that references HARVEY. You may not have heard of it but you should have because it is in the same class as those other two, It is Ron Howard's A BEAUTIFUL MIND. Take a look. You'll love it.

James Stewart has always been one of my favorite actors, especially his Westerns. As a boy, I loved this movie when I saw it on TV. In my freshman year at university, Steward and Helen Hayes brought the stage play of Harvey to our university. Since I was still ‘new’, I didn’t learn about this until it was too late to get tickets. One of my biggest regrets in life was not seeing Harvey on the stage with James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd. (Later, I was able to see Vincent Price and Roddy McDowall in a play together).

One of my all-time favorites! James Stewart is perfection and Josephine Hull as Veta Louise won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Stewart has said that her role was the more difficult one because at different times she had to both believe and not believe in Harvey. The movie is adapted from a Pulitzer Prize winning play.

I thought this was forgotten. My High School play was this in the sixties. Was also on tv remake in 1972. Surprised to find 3 reactions to it. I would rather not watch Stewart, he repels me, but I'll go with y'all for a minute or two.

Harvey made an impression on me when I saw it as a teenager. After watching it, I decided to try to be the nicest person I possibly could. It worked. My mom, who was psychologist, was concerned that I was unnaturally nice. Well, I should say it worked for awhile, until I got to college where my roommate taught me to be cynical. Guess I got the formula 977 injection.

I'm so glad I found this channel quite a while ago. Love you guys, your reactions, your discussions (and sometimes passionate but civil debates!) - getting glimpses of your backgrounds and experiences from Romania and the Philippines, your chemistry, the way you let the movie mostly flow and save longer commentary until afterwards - I could go on, but this is already an awfully long run-on sentence. Seeing this film again after so many years have passed was bittersweet. Thanks for what you do.

If you need any, proof that Harvey was real is in the painting. How could the Artist give an accurate portrayal unless he too could see him. Elwood would certainly not pay good money for it unless it was accurate, now would he !! Glad you both enjoyed this classic, always great to see more people discover & enjoy it.

Elwood's, invisible friend "Harvey", is a mythical Celtic entity, a shapeshifter, if you will. [for lack of a better word] right now, known as a "Puca".

@@MJoy4Fun for sure. There's a movie that came out in theaters this year called AFTER DEATH. It's about near death experiences. You should check it out. It's more like a documentary style so it probably wouldn't be a reaction type movie. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
