Harvesting Softneck Garlic 2024, Time To Harvest Garlic, Allotment Gardening
Unfortunately the weather this year, in the U.K., has been so cold and wet that the garlic have really succumbed to garlic rust.
As the leaves are so bad I decided to lift the softneck garlic early in the hope that my Hardneck varieties won’t also catch rust.
I’m lifting the bulbs 3 or 4 weeks earlier than I normally do and so the crops are not as big as I would like.
The varieties featured in this video are;
Iberian Wight Softneck Spanish
Solent Wight Softneck
Provence Wight Softneck
Maddock Wight Softneck
Thermidrome Softneck
Albigensian Wight Softneck
Early Purple Wight Softneck
Topadrome Softneck

    Yes it certainly has been poor. We can only hope we get some sunshine soon. I might try spring planting some garlic next year as a bit of an experiment. Hope your harvest is decent 🧄🪴

    That's a decent harvest there Iain, would you recommend planting supermarket Garlic, I planted some I got from Aldi and will be harvesting these in few days time, not sure what I will be getting though 😅, happy gardening. Sam

    Hi Sam. I’ve tried planting supermarket garlic before where it has come from a European country and labelled as a particular variety, as you can be fairly confident that it is what it says it is. Unfortunately a lot of garlic does come from China and then it doesn’t like our conditions too much. Also, you can’t guarantee the variety is the variety. I bought some garlic labelled as elephant garlic and when I tried to show it was told it wasn’t that variety. I would always buy from a garden centre or from the Isle of Wight garlic farm. Hopefully you have a good enough harvest to use and store 🧄🌻

    Your sheer volume of plants I would think makes that an awesome harvest. And they aren't such terrible bulbs; like you said some of them were pretty good. But I understand if you're market gardening it's a different story. All in all I understand your frustration. I'm in the US and this is my (I think) 3rd harvest of garlic. I have signs of what I thought was Anthracnose but now I'm wondering if it isn't the Leek Moth as someone suggested. Then again I have ump-teen earwigs...ugh... all in all, I feel you. But great growing nonetheless.

    Thanks. It’s more the frustration that the crop has been so badly affected due to the weather and nothing can be done to correct it. The harvest is still decent compared to many but😀 Still have the hardneck types to pull. Hope you have a good day 🪴🌻
