Harvesting New Potatoes in May (UK) How was our Haul??? | No Dig Potatoes - Off Grid

Find our how our EXTRA EARLY Potatoes did ...
We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible and we are completely off grid.
Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No Dig Lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs.
Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.
In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest. We planted Potatoes in February and in this video we are Harvesting New Potatoes in May ... in the UK !!! ... How did we do this? How was our Haul??? This is No Dig Potatoes - Off Grid....
We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way already, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
It takes us about a day to film each video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos by having a 2nd camera and maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we'll message you a password for the 'members area' of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon's 💚

Thanks for the video, harvest early potatoes as much as you need for your meal. The rest will then give even more yield and every time you harvest the potatoes will continue to give their freshly harvested taste.

Hi Boer ... this is a really good tip for our outdoor or pot grown potatoes - thank you ... These ones grown in our polytunnel, we needed to harvest them all, as we needed the space back to get the summer crops in there this week - its been a great early treat though - we are enjoying delicious new potatoes everyday right now to get them used whilst still delicious and fresh - thanks for watching & for your comment 💚✌️🌿

Good vid just harvested some of mine today 👍3 best tips with potatoes of all seasons , 1.. Never harvest before potato plants flower 2.. Pick off all flowers as flowers use lots of energy that is taken away from potato growth.. 3 for full size potatoes let your plants start to die off before harvesting .... An extra tip for you if you eat banana's chop the skins into small bits and bury around the potato plant the potassium will increase yield and potato size it also improves soil , Thanks keep going 👍

I always got too eager and harvested potatoes too early!! I have since learnt patience...and have now mastered the art of waiting to the leaves have truly died back!! It's hard to do I know...but its worth it for the bigger potatoes!! Nice haul though!!

These potatoes were destined to come out in mid May no matter, as we needed the space back for planting up tomatoes - we leave our main crop potatoes in until the leaves die back for sure 👍 great advice 🙏 I do like our new potatoes to be a bit smaller though, I really like when I can keep the smaller ones whole when Boiling them up and biting into a whole little potatoes 😋 It is good to have a few bigger ones though of course to make sure you get a good yield - thanks for watching 💚✌️🌿

With you all the way on this. I’ve been growing swift in my polytunnel for the last few years now. This year I planted mine on the 16th Feb after chitting them. As the soil in the poly is dry at that time of the year I give the ground a good soak before planting and make sure to mulch well. Regular watering is essential. I started harvesting mine this week by feeling around the base of different plants and taking some of the larger ones and no more than I need for the day. They come out of the ground so clean, no blemishes and need no more than a quick rinse under the tap. Had some this evening, absolutely delicious. Only potential issues with growing them like this are frost protection, watering and space available although they can be lifted early to make room for summer crops.

Hi nick, such a treated aren’t they! 😋🙏💚 we had to lift them all because we were ready to get all the summer crops into the polytunnel - our outside earlies will defo be per plant to savoury the freshness and let what we don’t need right then keep growing for sure! Great idea 👍✌️🌿
