The sad part is independent fisherman who use to be able to make a decent living are now becoming (independent contractors) working for peanuts for the co-operatives, catch-share programs, and fish market monopolies. The (Fish Market Owners) sit on the regulatory committee's or have buddies/family members help pass legislation hurting independent fisherman (both recreational and commercial), but help their own business interest to control price, availability, & supply. Often using community and environmentalism as a "Marketing slogan" to get the locals to support their cause in the regulations. This usually forces independent fisherman out of business destroying the diverse fishing culture, or forces them to work for co-ops, private operations, fish dealers, fish houses, and commercial enterprise for below poverty wages. The Wholesale Market Dealers manipulate the prices keeping the pre-market price low (What the Fisherman get for work) and retail price (What customer pays) very high. Often Markups from Water to Retail are in the 1000%'s or more. This Hurts Consumers, and the (Real Fisherman) actually out there doing the work, but increases the profit margin and monopoly run by the "Good Ol Boy" fisheries industry. There is the Truth about who is profiting from the high fishing regulations, Mark Anthony Bartholomew, Managing Director NewportRiver.com®
