Kindness is the best ingredient in any relationship. Humor, laughter, forgiveness make life happier. When you think enough is enough, you will feel happier.
Meditation has made me a very peaceful, happy person. Also, my best friends. But I believe the biggest happiness factors are: 1) a creative life; 2.) a sense of humor and 3.) self-love and forgiveness of yourself and others. I left my family - aunts, uncles, cousins - behind and don't miss them at all, though I enjoyed growing up with them. Now we have little in common, so I don't miss them at all. My friends are my family, and I interact with many nice people in my community on a daily basis.I had a very happy marriage of twenty-five years. My husband died in an accident, so I grieved for quite a while, but I found that tears had been cleansing, and now I thoroughly enjoy my life as an artist and writer living alone. I cherish my solitude, and wake up very happy every day.

That is amazing, I am a very happy person who doesn't worry about little things. I am always trying to get up with my old friends and go out fishing and other things like that. I'm also disabled but that doesn't make me not want to do things I'm able to do. I've always tried too tell my wife, whenever you have something that needs to be done get it done and out of the way. I've had so many friends and romantic partners come and go though. They say they bring happiness but too bad they don't stick around. They either leave due to a move, a better job offer, a breakup, etc. Nothing ever lasts so how can you maintain close friendships in today's society? One of my favorites film sequences is the very last scene in Star Wars Return of the Jedi and the victory celebration. It just makes me think of old friends and acquaintances who've been separated for years reuniting and being happy again. I wish I could see all of those people again all together one more time.
Smart man that professor, I think that most people would have figured out what brings them happiness during their lives, if you work night and day then you do not have the time or energy to do nice things, if you are lucky to have spare time and you use it well and you try your best to do good and be fair to those around you then life wil be a god as it can be, Happiness is a fleeting feeling it comes and goes, what young children should be told is that life will not be a fairy stories all bright lights and nice things, Life has its ups and down for everyone, some people suffer great hardships, illness of the body or mind, caught up in wars, famines, drought earthquakes, floods, freezing weather, long hot sunny weather with no rain at all. hunger, abuse, It is good to stop and think for a few moments each day, look around and see that your life is better than some other people and be grateful and thankful for what you have got and don't be greedy
I watched it at 2x speed (as I usually do), but what struck me was that the Prof. seems to have a lot of experience speaking on TV: he gets to the point very quickly. They don't have to cut his sentences because he already speaks in soundbites.
@piccalillipit9211

"I watched it at 2x speed" this is actually very bad for you as it is feeding the dopamine pathway in your brain - this downregulated the dopamine receptors and creates a negative feedback loop which you will get diagnosed as ADHD but is in fact self stimming behaviour.

@@piccalillipit9211 Thank you very much, I'll look into it. Your last sentence is particularly interesting. I don't speed up movies, or videos that are difficult to understand even at normal speed. My rationale for speeding up some videos is that I'm saving time: why should I spend twice as much time on something when I can understand everything at 2x speed? Why don't I speed up every single clip if I was truly looking for dopamine release? How can I be sure that my true motivation isn't what I actually think it is (i.e. saving time)?
@piccalillipit9211
Жыл бұрын
@@alittax - the honest answer is - you cant. But I used to stay up really late working and I had this entire rationale worked out that I was a night person and I even had an anthropological evolutionary explanation as to why there were morning people and night people. Turns out I was a night person cos I was stimming my brain with dopamine at 2am and not getting up until 11.00am I stopped doing it and now I get up before the sunrise every morning and walk my dog as the sun comes over the hills... Our brains are amazing at lying to us about why we do things. There is a LOT of evidence that we don't MAKE decisions, we act on instinct and then retrospectively justify the action. FMRI scans show that we have made decisions dn chosen A B or C in a situation before we even engaged the thinking parts of the brain. then when questioned we have REALLY good reasoning why we made the decision. Our brains lie to us all the time - have a look for "do we really have free will" and stuff like that. Its stuff like this that makes this field SO fascinating to me.
The importance of good relationships in terms of improving health and longevity has been known for a long time. I grew up with an alcoholic, manic depressive mother who was frequently out of control, constantly complaining, threatening suicide, and much worse. When I was a teenager I stayed away from her as much as possible by spending most of my free time at my neighbor's house (who were thankfully very understanding and helpful). When I was old enough to fend for myself (at around age eighteen) I left for college and never returned (after having an intense conversation with her where I told her I would no longer tolerate her crazy, manipulative behaviors. Shortly after that she attempted suicide by jumping off the roof of her house. She broke many bones, etc., and was transported to a larger city hospital via helicopter ambulance and spent almost six months there recovering physically and psychologically. While there, she stopped drinking (since she couldn't access alcohol), stopped smoking, received extensive psychotherapy, and lived the last ten years of her life as a fairly sane, decent person. My life improved DRAMATICALLY once I took the power away from her, and surrounded myself with sane and sober friends and family.

I am happy and my friends are toxic. Lol. Here is what I do. 1. Turn off the Tv only subscribe to things I wish to digest. 2. Maintain a good relationship with my kids and make sure they are ok. 3. Have money in the bank for a rainy day and to spend. 4. Good work life balance 5. Make enough money where I am not stressed and have the ability to make more if needed. It’s different for everyone. I will say I am very content. My relationships stress me out because they are not happy and want to bring me down by always making me spend money on them or spend money to see them but they do not reciprocate. Once I stopped doing that and put boundaries in place. I became very happy. I think he is saying that because of all the old people during Covid. Covid brought me peace. Lol. 6. Forgiveness is the key to happiness because forgiveness establishes healthy relationships.
If a baseline for happiness is set at birth - and there is evidence it is- how does he know he’s not simply measuring the extent to which ‘happy’ folk are more likely to enjoy the company of others/ can be bothered with the company of others? I.e. the causal relationship is reversed.

I was wondering the same thing. Or when he said that, if you have good relationships, you'll not only be much happier but also healthier when you're older. Isn't it more likely the other way around? When you're healthy for the most part of your life, you are much more likely to be happy/content and able to do things with other people that make you even happier. In contrast, when you get chronically sick at a younger age it can really limit your capabilities/resources in daily life resulting in a lot of the relationships you had with other people slowly ceasing to exist or never getting the chance to develop (because you are physically not able to go out and meet people, e.g.) - and that is not due to the lack of trying or not wanting to be happy but due to sometimes really shitty circumstances.
Good relationships, and 💕 love. That's nice.
Findimgs: Social fitness- keeping in contact with friends, relatives, etc. Be intentional about making good network. Also to touch a pet and having religious practices brings comfort. Connectivity is extremely important. Social media may not help in the pursuit of happiness. (Comparisons do not help). 1. Take small actions. Send a message to someone and make the effort to connect.
Studies like these and the attention given to them appear to me to emerge from societal values of wanting the predictability and unambiguity and formula for “doing life right” and whatever the good life is. That suggests there is some secret to living the good life or a specific object you need to chase after. What many of us might be feeling is that we’re not living the good life and need the answer to doing so, that there is always more out there. When we might already be doing it, but think that whatever we are doing is always not enough and someone else must be more satisfied, happier, than we currently are. Especially when we scientize happiness, we can begin to separate people into categories of the happy and the unhappy, and happiness is available to those lucky enough and skilled enough to attain it, such as those who find relationships relatively easy and those who don’t. Really though, happiness is subjective, and perhaps happiness comes from the realization that the way we already are, is enough.

Also these guides never explain how to keep relationships up especially for those not particularly social
I can tell you this, after many years of work, you'll remember the people not the work, as important as it was at the time. I have to work harder making contact with more of my old friends. Just contacted a guy I knew years ago. We were both happy about it! He invited me to lunch. May never go but said I might.
This has always been true from time immemorial. Love yr neighbour as you love yourself.
A “good life” can be different things to different people depending on their circumstances. For a poor single mom a good life can mean educating her kids.

There has never been found a case of clinical depression in a hunting and gathering society. I think that's because we're wired to be social, and in a hunting and gathering community there are no closed rooms and no locked doors. There's no room for abuse. There's no room for isolation.
True happiness comes with not caring...not caring what other people are doing, not caring what other people say, not caring what people think of you. Unfortunately, that's like telling most people to just go win a billion dollars lottery.
I've seen dogs jumping around and wagging their tails excitedly in the presence of their owners, and I've seen dogs just lying down contentedly near to their owners, not even wagging their tails. Which ones are happier depends on what is defined as "happiness". Same with humans -- some people like to go out partying and having a good time, while others like to sit quietly somewhere contemplating on deeper things. Which ones are happier? Again, depends on what is defined as happiness.

my dog does both things. He does a tail wag dance when someone comes home he hasn't seen for a bit. (Girls are off at college.) He wags his tail daily for me and he lounges with me too.
Another key to happiness? Give yourself away, volunteer, help others, and get involved with a cause that's important to you. Doing so is very rewarding and it helps you to get your mind off of yourself!
Refreshing. Thanks.

The first four years is when personality forms. (whether due to genetic factors or environment) It's a critical period.
I agree with Professor. The key word is abundance.

This video is awesome. I just wish it was easier said than done. It’s a lifelong battle for me.
So, so very true!💝💝💝
Concentrate on improving your own self esteem and happiness is guaranteed...because when you like yourself, you will attract the right people into your life. Self esteem is the starting point of all life issues.
Neuro-psicology. People are born happy, as everyone in my family, in spite of stressful or sad situations, or people are born unhappy. Of course there is a large gray area in between. But happiness is something from inside. You either have the necessary neurotransmitters and the brain connections for it, or you don't. Unhappy people who look for happiness in the world, will never find it. Of course naturally happy people will have more non stressful social connections. But that probably is rather the consequence of being genetically happy than what causes happiness. We have to try to find out the molecules, receptors and circuits of happiness 😊

You're onto something. Physiology and ones constitution does play a part, and that stuff is hard to change sometimes. But we are social animals, and thats a very deep evolutionary adaptation that probably trumps all.

I've suspected this for some time. Some people are just innately happier. It all seems very genetic.
A young puppy that felt miserable wished to know how he could find happiness. _Why, happiness is a dog's tail. It is right behind you. There is no need to feel sad._ Delighted with this revelation the puppy thought that all he need do is catch a hold of his tail and he will cease being so depressed. He spun around and around and no matter how hard he tried he failed in his effort to grab his tail. Finally exhausted from his attempts he gave up, having decided that his quest would forever elude him. After that he simply went about his business. And happiness followed him wherever he went.

Great ADVICE. HE IS EXACTLY RIGHT
Riches. Money and wealth.
Howdy hi hi, It has long been my contention that the primary pathway to finding happiness both in the moment and long term. Is the active bipartisan engagement in affective empathy. When we converse with family and friends. And share a common emotional state. Every person involved self triggers biological rewards whenever emotional parity is achieved. Everything said in this video simply confirms this.
Seems they are missing something more important, which is understanding why some people are more interested than others in keeping social connections active. There could be many reasons; and probably keeping healthy social connections is a result and expression of something deeper.
Not everybody feels bad about ourselves when we are on Facebook and see positive postings about another person's family and adventures. Some of us actually feel joy in those types of postings. Even if we don't have children of our own or celebrate all holidays . Atleast that includes me so i may skew some of your research. I am an introvert that takes pleasure in other's pleasure. And i am happy for their achievements.

And the reason you'll be considered a 'stalker' is because people of the world don't truly understand what happiness is and how to achieve it. Hence we have a mostly 'wicked' and 'unhappy' world population who are naturally defensive because of it being that way which in fact they've been a part of creating. Most people will never obtain 'true' happiness in their lives because they're busy being too SELFISH to care about others than themselves! But the great thing about these types of people are that we'll be rid of them because they live shorter lives. Thank god!

Well relationships are a 2 way street. The advice won't work with someone who doesnt want to connect regularly, but there is probably someone who does want to connect regularly
If you are a needy person, go out and befriend people . If you dont depend on others to be happy, then, by golly, you are fking awesome.

The is probably a correlational study, ie I doubt that the conclusion can be made that forging good relationships make you happy. There may be a third factor, such as genetics, which makes some people more popular and also more healthy and successful. For example, we know how much physical attractiveness plays a role.
