About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

My grandmother was homeless in Puerto Rico before she met my grandfather. When my grandfather brought her to the United States, she worked her butt off to make sure that her and her family were taken care of. She’s always been the hardest working person I knew. I was homeless at one point and time. It was my husband, myself, and my dog. We were all living in one car along with all of our backpacks and things we had. But my homelessness wasn't because of drugs, or that I had gotten evicted. Although, with absolutely $0 in our pockets, deciding to leave all the stress away at home, we traveled in a car across the US during a pandemic. I have to say the trip definitely wasn't easy. Being on the streets you'd have to deal with a variety of obstacles: finding changes of clothes, CLEAN socks were such an issue and sometimes you'd have to resort to stealing food... Altogether with not being able to shower up until you panhandled for enough money to get a night's stay at a cheap motel.. It was hard to keep up hygiene, and I myself like to keep very clean when I can. Luckily we weren't without a car, so we were mobile fortunately safer with the whip than out on the street. But having to sleep in a car brought along a whole other set of issues- police, nosy people, and crackheads all at once, so my advice to anyone sleeping in their car right now - park and rides are your best friend. Don't stay at Walmart parking lots. You could either get kicked out or encounter people trying to rob you. Also, try to always carry around pepper spray with you just in case. I remember my husband ended up finding a job up in Sacramento, CA at a restaurant. The employer was so understanding about the situation, but get ready for a rough patch of 2 weeks. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep the job. But to all employers - give the homeless a chance. And to all people who might encounter someone asking for spare change - Don't be afraid to give. It could really help someone out, and in most cases that money isn't going directly to drugs or alcohol if its someone who actually wants the help. I am now writing this in my own house with my husband and dog. I have never felt more proud to have my own little spot. But I never forget all those people who helped me get through living in my car. I hope if you are reading this and you are considered homeless, remember to stay strong and don't give in. God bless whoever is reading this, stay safe!

I've been homeless for 30 years. Walked through all 48 states and part of Canada as a homeless veteran. It's hard to deal with life sometimes but you have to try to make the best of it and I rely on my experience in the military. Talking and listening to other people that has been out here like me(homeless) helps get me through. Society looks down on us homeless but let me ask a question....... Do you really know what that other person has gone through or experienced in life? Don't cast a stone when you live in a glass house yourself.... It can happen to you too and would you then look at people and life the same???

True there are many causes of homelessness. But don’t deny that drugs, alcohol & mental illness are also causes. Not every homeless person is an addict or mentally ill, same as not every addict/mentally ill person is homeless. But when they are, it adds significantly to problems getting housing & holding down a job.

This could happen to anyone. Sadly, I almost became homeless because I got sick. I was in transition for a year. A good friend that I call angel gave me a chance in life. I now own my own home, car, and have my self worth back. Respect the people that are on the streets for some day....that could be you. Remember where you came from and who helped you get there. It can, and does. My kids and I have been in a one room hotel room for almost two years. My lease ended during covid. I was unemployed because my job shut down, and getting by, but to sign a new lease, my landlord raised my rent & I could not afford it while on unemployment. Putting everything we own in storage and coming here was all I could do. Been living out of a suitcase with the kids (and cats) for far too long. I miss my stuff. I miss privacy. I miss feeling like I am giving my kids what they need. It is absolutely soul crushing. Apartments here want income = to 3x rent. If your credit isn't great, nobody approves your application (while still taking hundreds of $$ just to apply). The US is a terrible place if you are not wealthy & connected.

When I was homeless with children we created a sort of stick house around our tent in the Salinas river bottom with limbs and brush and seriously most people could not see us as they walked by. We also camouflaged the top of our tent with Willow branches. You can often feel like a refugee in your own country just for trying to stay together and stay alive. My heart still skips a beat when I hear a helicopter. My biggest fear was being discovered and my children being taken away because we could not find a place to call home ... no rest besides the few days a month we could afford to rest at a motel. The shelters where frightening for children. Seriously scary. I had someone place a bunch of medication that could of killed my babies in their cots so they would try to eat them , Twice. In SLO county CA.I filled a report about it then they treated us as an enemy. We left and tried our best to stay in camp grounds, motels and to hide. Thank God we met a woman who gave us a place to call home.

Even if I have nothing to give sometimes I talk with them. It takes real humility to ask for help. I pray the Lord Jesus soften my heart to have more compassion towards others.

Great video! One would think there'd be a happy ending to this but tragedy occurs repeatedly with the homeless. With drug addiction & mental illness going on, not many will take a gamble by helping like the store owner did. At most, they might give them food & shoo them away. I used to pick the dead homeless off the streets & have learned to have more compassion for those still struggling to survive.

This is a wicked world and homeless people are frequently regarded as parasites or scum. Homelessness can happen to anyone and we should not look down on people just because we have a roof over our heads.ec One day, the tables may turn and we may become homeless and the homeless may finally afford a home. Nothing in life is certain.

I ever saw an interview with a teenage boy who was tricked by his own mother and subsequently became homeless in another city very foreign to him. He was only 17 and was scared especially at night. He had to climb up a tree and tied himself to a strong branch with his belt and slept there.

I started to follow this channel because the videos here make me think. That's something that I need every day, something to remind me that I should be glad and thankful for the life I have and the condition I have now. And most important to remind me that I should return back to the people in the world and even the small help I do for someone can be very important. If the whole world thinks like that probably the world would be better now.

When I came home from the army in 1976, I lived in my dad's attic it was hot and dusty, yet, the price was right. I knew then, the only way forward was to find employment and soon. The key to a life of quality is a job. I would encourage people to find employment no matter what kind , just find it. May god bless you. Period.

Everyone is NOT just one mistake away from being on the streets. The fact that many people are NOT one step away from being homeless is why so many people don't help the homeless. The people with the hardest hearts haven't and will never experience homelessness. People who have never and will never experience homelessness look many places. A hard hearted person looks ahead to respond to what impacts their world and no one else's. They look up to strive toward their goals. The look behind them to see what their competition is doing. They look side to side to see who is passing them by. The Bubble that is privilege is all about reflecting YOU, YOUR NEEDS and NOTHING ELSE! People with the hardest hearts are those who haven't and will never experience homelessness. Those who haven't and will never experience homelessness, WILL NEVER LOOK DOWN BECAUSE, THERE IS NOTHING FOUND THEY DEEM WORTHY OF SEEING WHEN LOOKING DOWN! When you look down their is nothing to see but the painful suffering and often ugly reality of poor peoples lives. Why bother looking at anything or anyone who is BENEATH YOU! By looking down you only see all the refuse of society both human and material. By looking down you see the brutal reality that lay beyond that carefully maintained bubble that is yourself. By looking down you see clearly used syringes, alcohol containers, broken hopes, broken dreams, dead eyed children, innocent trusting faces beaten black and blue. Worst of all only by looking down do you really see the multitudes of broken people some alive some murdered for PERVERTED BLOOD SPORT AS SHOWN HERE! I know this is true because, I've lived all my long life ALWAYS having ENOUGH MONEY to keep a roof over my head, my lights on, my heat functioning, my refrigerator full, my phone active and more. I've known WANT well ENOUGH because, I'm not rich but, I've never once in life known the true nature of NEED because, while not RICH I'VE ALSO NEVER BEEN TRULY POOR! To know need you must look down, because TRUE DESPERATE NEED exists at your at your heels, shivering in doorways, laying on cardboard, invisible on park benches, lost in a mentally ill hellscape. They don't call the poorest among us DOWN TRODDEN WITHOUT GOOD REASON. Too see the down trodden one must first LOOK DOWN. TRUE NEED has a soft voice barely audible over the din of your own Fast, Fun, Full & Furious world so far above. The world of TRUE NEED exists on the level of the soiled hub cap, the hard foundation edge, the unwelcoming building ledge, the pigeon, the sea gull, the foul exhaust pipe, the wind swept debris, the shimmering puddle, the passer's by spit or urine, the forlorn blanket that too often marks a lonely side walk grave. The people who ignore the homeless MOST EFFECTIVELY IN FACT are those LEAST LIKELY to fall into the never world of poverty below. The people who ignore homelessness are those completely oblivious to reality of tenuous lives lived at their heels. A WORLD OF PEOPLE REMAIN INVISIBLE BECAUSE FEW FORCE THOSE LIKE ME WHO SOAR MINDLESSLY ABOVE IT ALL TO LOOK DOWN! I know of the existence and privations of homelessness ONLY because, I had friends who loved me enough to force me to LOOK DOWN and INTERACT HONESTLY with a painful brutal ugly cruel sadistic reality far different than my own. Privilege is a Bubble. Unfortunately not all people living in the Bubble that is personal privilege are lucky enough to have strong friends armed with pins unafraid to use them! Mark I CANIS LUPUS dedicate this missive to your great works and all those homeless souls who suffer, endure and too often perish because, SO FEW IN OUR SOCIETY DARE TO LOOK DOWN!

Thank you for the amazing transformation that I have seen in your work. When you first popped up on my news feed a few months ago I was not seeing any connection to what is really going on. Now I have seen vids of you interviewing those of us who are working the front lines, who have lived through the understanding of how the system supports the creation of mental health issues by torturing individuals, particularly women, with domination tactics on every level. I have survived and I receive SSI/SSDI for PTSD rape/incest survivor and am able to pay rent so I am not on the street. It is truly a hopeless struggle. Those who need this help are too far gone to put the pieces together on the level that is necessary. Thank you again for making better vids. What I saw a few months ago just said things like - this poor mental case. Here's some socks.....thank you

I think this film is a great way to raise awareness and fundraise, but sometimes people that have no home need to be treated with dignity and respect. They need a hello, as well as food, water and shelter more than our spare change. Thank you for all involved in helping people reach a sense of normal again in their life.
