I think he’s more of a baritone than we think, his low notes sounded really full and nice as opposed to his higher belts which sounded strained once he got north of A4.

@@Oly1y Range doesn't entirely determine voice type especially in contemporary music. For example, some tenors can sing baritone lows like Brian McKnight and Michael Bolton. While some baritones like Tom Jones sing tenor quite effortlessly. Vocal timbre and color determine voice type more than technical range.

Mitchell Palmski actually voice type is determined by the passagio. And the passagio are where the vocal naturally flips from chest to mix and from mix to head voice/falsetto. Passagi for baritones is C4/D4 and E4/F4. For tenors it's around E4/F4 and G4/A4

Its hard to determine his voice but he's kinda light lyric baritone to me? (correct me if i'm wrong) His voice is great, i've been blown away of his performance of SOTT in Toda Show 2017 but for me he needs a great vocal coach to avoid some strained notes. I think C5 is the maximum high for him and don't go higher than that.

Yes! A lyric baritone, the light/full lyric tags apply to tenors and sopranos only. Based on how his technique goes, I wouldn't advise him to go higher than G4 or even F4 honestly... I'm very glad he dodged the C5 in Sign of the Times as many times as he could. Taking a rest and working more on his voice would do him so well!!!

@@pb2560 Ohhh.. nice hearing that, now i know. His G4 is awesome, very clean to listen. So i will identify him from now on as a Lyric Baritone. He's great but needs more improving, their break in 1D is really helpful so he can have more time to rest too. I think he needs to rest and do some vocal training of whole 2019 haha

Allan Reyes No his voice his too dark to be a lyric baritone. I’d argue maybe a baritenor or dramatic tenor. He strains a lot but that’s because he’s pushing chest which is partially for stylistic reasons. You can’t attribute his straining to him being a baritone, because even tenors who sing above A4 would strain a bit if they were exclusively pushing chest.

congrats on the video! really good to see that i’m not the only one who pays attention in those kind of technical things when harry’s singing! i would also like to bring something up: i have seen him belting the shit out of a C5 multiple times in that “drag me down” song’s high notes, at live! why he keeps avoiding the same C5 at SOTT? (talking about that part that comes after the last “just stop your crying it’s the sign of the ti-aaaaames (that he does that nice note change when live)) i don’t think he’s just a studio singer, but the ONLY time i saw him belting that powerful C5 of SOTT just like the studio version was on his documentary, when he’s singing SOTT seated at the couch with his arms around mitch, really informal right? my hunch is that he gets a little bit nervous and doesn’t pay attention to his larynx and all the tension around his throat and vocal chords, but when feeling really comfortable he can go that high.

Harry has belted the high note in SOTT two times aside of the documentary (they're both here). But yeah, every other time he's gone for lower note changes. The thing is, I don't see how Harry belting in the upper fourth octave/lower fifth octave is a strength or something that I wanna see again. He pulls up his larynx as he goes higher and that's really damaging to his voice, so personally I prefer when he does those note changes and avoids anything above G4. Also, the only time he hit the C5 in Drag Me Down was in the Carpool Karaoke. All of the other performances had a lower key so Harry was belting B4s instead if C5s. Well, not that there's a substantial difference, but still. As you pointed out, having a mostly relaxed throat will help someone to get to their highest notes more easily. But I don't think it's that much of a reason for him to avoid the high notes in SOTT, more than a conscious choice of not belting that high. Straining too much causes vocal fatigue and pain in the throat/face and in the long run can mess with the overall quality of your voice, so I like that Harry is making choices of avoiding the highest belts of his songs (Only Angel, SOTT, Carolina). It's the smartest thing to do, and also, of course, train his voice to belt without straining all the time. Thanks for your comment!

Calling him a baritone is like calling adele an alto. Hes easily a tenor with a very chesty technique that makes him strain like a baritone, but once he dials it down its really easy to spot hes a tenor

If he's a baritone, then he's definitely on the lighter side, but his low notes seem even lighter than many tenors. I think this comes from the fact that previously, he wasn't able to sing higher notes so people just assumed that he's a baritone.

Hes a Tenor-Alto because hes real range Is C3-E5 Low chest C3-B3 High mixed Chest C4-C5 FALSETTO G#4-E5

It’s amazing how easily he can hit a G4

Lekha R I did chose his best moments to put here. His G4s in Ultralight Beam are really pretty, but most of the time Harry struggles on his mixed voice. See that on the Sweet Creature chorus. Also, the sound is not the clearest there, and thr acoustics make it sounds more easy for him And also having a raised larynx doesn't mean you automatically super strain on everything. Ariana, for example, raises her larynx on D5 and above on her mix but she still has a great ease on the fifth octave when she's on her best shape. Harry's mix is overall very throaty and strained, but of course on his best days he's able to deliver great vocals like the ones I chose to put here.

He sound very youthful airy and low larynx lows his comfortable singing relaxed phrasing f4-g4 in chest voice (tenor passagio) also his chest voice go to C5 even alot of tenor cant reach that in chest belt / chest mix so they sometimes transpose down tenor climaxes to b4 i don't even know why he is baritone his lows is very brief while all of his song is in tenor range

Well voices aren't made for one thing, but you're right, I think his voice is best suited for this genre more than bubblegum pop or anything else. He also surprised me with the folky tone in From the Dining Table in which I think he sounds awesome. His rasp is more of a thing of bad technique. He's always had problem with throatiness (aka the rasp) because he doesn't use an optimal placement, and his chestiness adds to it as well as his forced high larynx to reach higher notes. It's a very common thing in underdeveloped voices who want ease on their higher range. In 1D he was the belter along with Zayn and then he took over that role after he left so all that belting with strain didn't help to mature his voice nicely. I think it's possible to overcome the rasp problem with a better placement and move even mixing (so he doesn't push his chest voice so high) but I highly doubt he's looking for that as I think he really likes the gritty tone he's using in this era. I really hope his next album proves me wrong cause I would love for him to get better training, I really like his voice and he has shown so much potential.

Yeah he's more rock than pop. He could go in pop rock tho but purely pop is hard. From the creator of this vid said that G4 and F4 is the maximum in his voice because those notes is much more clean other than his high's and way less dangerous. But Styles good day could go higher like the C5 in 7:15 and 2:11 in this link kzread.info/dash/bejne/eniaxKuve8_cfaw.html . Yeah he can't change it but he can get a proper training from vocal coaches for more techniques so he can lessen his straining singing high's.

Pamela Bravo thank you so much for explaining it to me! now it really does make sense, and i see the issue. I just thought his natural voice was raspy, you know, as in he was supposed to have this rasp going on because he was born with it, and i know voices arent made for one thing in particular, i didnt use the right words i shouldve, what i meant is that, in my opinion, rock seems like it was made for him,as in it works best with his voice, idk, i was super excited about it when i listened to his album for the first time.

Yeah, I really like the genre he's in right now. You can tell this is really his sound and his first record was quite solid for being the first! From the Dining Table is also my favorite song from HS1:) Rasp is never a natural thing in someone's voice. Rasp is either add as a conscious choice or as a result of bad technique, but it's almost never a good thing because the ways to achieve rasp are not very healthy for the voice. Another alternative for rasp is growling, which as opposed as rasp can be done in a healthy way. Beyonce is known for using the growling technique in a way that doesn't ruin her vocal chords, if you want to look for examples. Of course you can still use rasp if you have a good technique, but it's best to understand what it does to the voice and if it's really worth it to make your throat suffer just to sound gritty.

That kid voice called baritone? Hahahaha He just have a good domain of his chest voice lower vocal range, before fry, but he is a tenor, for real, nothing more.

He’s a guy not many can sing in 5th octave even in of head voice and you can clearly see he is raising his larynx so of course they are strained he’s screaming them like rock stars do. Not a great technique but he’s improving on sustainability with his belts.

His c5s in carpool were relaxed nd the c5 in today show on "we know" also wasn't strained but yea he could use more abdominal support to remove those inconsistencies where sometimes he slays nd sometimes pushes

I think people pay enough attention to Zayn's voice when it comes to technique, and as I said in the description I made this to have a closer look to his voice and figure out his vocal fach - and I already know Zayn is a tenor. Harold Is Holy Well I mean, Harrys C5s aren't his only problem. Most of his belting range is strained and his throatiness is out of this world. Zayn still maintains a healthy technique up to F#4 and has a decent low range. Tone wise, I prefer Zayn over Harry but I understand that's subjective haha. And I'm not that familiar with Liam, but I remember from when I made the vocal range video for his EP that his belting was quite problematic. Zayn is still at the top when it comes to technique.

@@pb2560 I have to agree that Zayn and Liam's techniques are better than Harry's (although he's improved a lot over the past few years), but I absolutely LOVE Harry's vocal tone 100% more than anyone else's. But as you said, that's totally an opinion. As a side note, I also think Harry has an incredible speaking voice. So low, rich, and relaxing.

Most definitely, you can hear how high is larynx is and how the notes have a shouty quality. It's difficult for baritones to get around A4-C5 without sounding strained. Harry could sound even more amazing if he got rid of his neck tension when belting.

I'm sure he can reach an E2 or Eb2 too, and go a little higher

Why do You assume that when he barely hit an f? I couldn’t hear it, I’m just trusting the video didn’t lie… I think ur assuming to justify calling him a baritone… but range doesn’t necessarily mean voice type. If he developed his upper ra ge more, you would hear those high notes more. Thats doesn’t mean he can’t have a beutiful low range too. That also doesnt make him a tenor.

hsxbutterfly It's okay! I think he uses a very unhealthy technique. He pushes his voice and his belting is very tense and strained, a quick look at the veins on his neck will tell you that. Moreover, his falsetto lacks development and he has very poor ease on it. And he pushes his larynx down on his lows very early for a baritone. At the same time I'm very surprised at his singing in general. He's a great musician, he knows how to add harmonies and change parts to keep the songs interesting. He also often avoids his highest notes which I quite like because straining too much is obviously not good for his voice. And he knows how to bring his mix very high, something that I find so great! That's why I think working with a vocal coach would be amazing, he just needs to have better support and relax his throat and face, and learn to mix more headily to avoid that nuch strain, as well as strengthening his low register and maybe his falsetto. But yeah, there's a lot of room for improvement there. He doesn't seem to be seeking vocal training, which worries me a lot because he may lose his voice pretty early if he keeps going like this.

I’d say he’s more of a baritenor/heldentenor or a dramatic/low tenor than a high baritone, since lyric high baritones tend to max out around A4 or Bb4 in chest voice. He’s not using any mixed voice so pushing chest up into the 4th octave is going to sound a bit strained no matter the voice type. He can hit a high C in chest voice and consistently seems to be able to hit As and Bs and his low notes, while dark don’t have much weight or consistency.

I'm not really sure he supports at all, but he has no strain to C#3 on his lower notes. Above C4 his voice is throaty and he has high larynx.

Wesley Scolmeister Well, it could be a lot of things. Maybe that day that he sang it for the first time he just couldn't belt that high. And over time he has been able to hit it better, so it's also a thing if building ease. He does avoid the C5 nowadays though (which I very much prefer instead of listening to his super strained voice)

Wesley Scolmeister Yes, I'm pretty sure he's a baritone. You can see that his mix starts very early and he has a lot of comfort on the upper second octave. And you could be able to go higher by building ease, making your mix headier, practice, etc. Harry just goes one semitone higher than you, so the C5 is not that far away! Just make sure not to sing high that much if you strain a lot there.

I believe he's a dramatic baritone or a "full"/heavy-toned lyric baritone. His tone is so heavy and the higher he goes the more impact his voice has. He has such a large vocal range, he constantly speaks in D2-E2, and can belt up to C5 live, I don't know why he doesn't incorporate more of his lower register into his music, he sounds great in his lower range. His head voice needs a bit more of development, which I think will improve his mixed voice which is pretty chesty right now. I'm a baritone and this man is my inspiration, I love his voice so much!!

@@musicval7462 Yes! G4 is very accessible for all baritones with enough practice. I'm also a baritone and I used to struggle with reaching F4 even when warmed up, with enough practice I can almost always hit G4 with ease. So it's definitely possible!

Because I beghan lesons one month ago and at first I had a hard time to reach an F4 but now it's easier (still a bit shouty haha), but I can reach G4 and even G#4 but I'm shouting really loud and I can sing consistently at like D4/D#4 and I would love to be able to sing consistantly on F4 and G4, so it's possible with practice x) ? haha

@@musicval7462 Absolutely! A tip is to tell yourself it's possible to hit these notes without pushing so you can subconciously relax when hitting them. You have it in you, it's already in your range, it's just not as intuitive to hit at first, but with time it'll become natural, you'll even reach easy and light A4s!
