    There is a very good reason why Harry lives with his terrible family, that they sadly don't really get into in the movies. Long story short, living there keeps him under a magical protection from being tracked until he turns 17.

  • @cryhwks

    @cryhwks

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well it's a little more than that. It's explained in the first movie that Lilly sacrificing herself for Harry left a protection from Voldemort. And Dumbledore because of that, somehow extended the protection through Lilly's blood with Pertuna. It basically means while he's there, Voldemort and his followers can't mess with him. But Harry has to renew the "Charm" every year, by going back, until he turns 17. And Dumbledore explains that he did this more to protect him from Voldemorts followers.

I don't think they put charms/protection around the Dursley's home until at least after book 4 for spoiler reasons. A few things: 1. The reason Fawkes didn't dye from looking into the Basilisk's eyes is because Phoenix's by their very nature cannot actually die, thus was immune to the snake's stare. 2. If you look back at the scene where Harry meets the Malfoys in the book shop before they go to Hogwarts, you see Lucius taking out Ginny's books from her Cauldron, if you look closely, he puts in ONE MORE BOOK than he pulled out. 3. The reason the sword came out of the hat was because the hat belonged to Godric Gryffindor, the four founders all created it but it was Gryffindor that hung onto the hat until it was needed. Now it's never stated in book or film why the sword could be pulled out of the hat by a worthy Gryffindor, but one could naturally assume that because Gryffindor spent the most time with the hat that he enchanted the hat to have this property. 4. Dumbledore is REALLY old, about 111 by the the time this story in particular takes place.

    From what I understand though, this action is exclusive to the movie; in the book Lucius just starts to utter an unknown curse. The actor for him was apparently reading Goblet of Fire while shooting this movie, and incidentally that's the book the Killing Curse is introduced properly in, so that was the first spell that came to mind. The Dursleys actually planned to abandon Harry, but as soon as they began to enact it they found a Howler from Dumbledore addressed to Aunt Petunia INSIDE THEIR HOUSE that roared a single sentence: "REMEMBER MY LAST, PETUNIA." What this meant was anyone's guess but Aunt Petunia was so shaken by the message, she ditched the plot and would never even listen to the idea of abandoning Harry again. It is believed to refer to the letter Dumbledore left in Harry's basket when he left him at Privet Drive and some terrible magical retribution that was promised would happen to the family should they ever dump Harry off.

    @@GuukanKitsuneWell, I never said anything about it being a spoiler, certainly not for any movie. I presume your comment refers to them asking in the beginning of the reaction, why the Dursleys wouldn't just let Harry go. Your comment not only doesn't answer that, but muddlies the water with a lot of wrong information (or "hearsay"). Since these reactions are quite old now, I'll include information of later books (SPOILERS): In his original letter (which the howler you mentioned does indeed refer to) Dumbledore explained to Petunia that he left Harry in her care because he would be uniquely protected from magical harm as long as he was able to call a house of his mothers blood his home. No matter how much Petunia envied and resented Lily's magical abilities and didn't want her in her life, she still loved her sister enough to be hurt by her sudden loss and accept this adoptive son into her care (although they still resented magic enough to try and stamp it out of Harry). No secret threats of violence from Dumbledore involved. They only changed their mind in the fifth book after their own son got attacked by a Dementor and they feared that they might have made themselves a target for dark wizards by taking in Harry. Dumbledore sent his howler as soon as he heard of the Dementor attack, anticipating their reaction, and reminding them that while they might not be totally comfortable, Harry was as good as dead, if they threw him out. So, them being slightly annoyed by Harry would not have made them throw Harry out and would not have magically made Dumbledore's howler appear. And they certainly weren't at the point of "never even listen[ing] to the idea of abandoning Harry". Which is why I asked why you would post this here and not under the reaction to the fifth movie.

    spoiler it’s revealed the protection Harry had from his mom lived on because Petunia is a blood sister. The protection spell from Lily the night she died lives on through Petunia because of that family connection. Harry has to stay a few weeks at least and call it home for him to remain protected and safe. Dumbledore explained this to Petunia. that’s the reason they had to keep him

    One important note is how brave Ron was to go into the spider cave. It's explained in the books that Ron is deathly afraid of spiders after Fred and George turned his teddy bear into a spider when he was little. So for him to follow those spiders and go into that cave was so badass.

    You guys laugh, rightfully so to be honest, but when Mr. Weasley sat down and asked Harry: "And who are you?" It must have been so satisfying to hear that for the poor boy. Every time he meets a new Wizard or Witch it's: "Oh my word, it's Harry Potter!" or "I can't believe I'm meeting Harry Potter!" or something similar. I imagine it must have been a huge breath of fresh air to not be recognized for once in his life and addressed as a normal boy.

    Harry and Ron are capable of surviving without Hermione at this point of the series. She doesn't always have all the answers. Harry and Ron are fully capable of figuring some things out on their own. After all, Harry does figure out where the entrance to the chamber was. One of the complaints I have about the movie series is that they allocate some of Ron's knowledge and achievements to Hermione. There are several times where his knowledge of the Wizarding World comes in as useful. Really....without all 3 of them working together then none of them would have survived. However, the movies paint Ron as the buffoon best friend that is sort of just along for the ride. They have Hermione and Harry on center stage while Ron is relegated to the shadows. Anyway....I'm loving your guys reactions.

    You should consider adding Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World to your library (cinema?). If you enjoyed Apollo 13, you'll likely find this movie wonderful as well. Despite being a fictional story, it, likewise, does not sacrifice historical accuracy for entertainment, realizing that audiences can derive the latter from the former. In fact, the production team went through a great deal of effort to ensure the crew knew what they were doing, going so far as to purchase an era appropriate frigate and teaching the cast to sail it (and, of course, filming on it). It's a wildly under-appreciated film, until fairly recently, and worth a watch.

    To answer George's question: That hand that snapped shut over Harry's, is called a Hand of Glory. A H of G is a hand of a hanged man, used by a witch, to give light. It is mentioned again in the 6th book, tho' not in the film. Harry finds it in a shop called Borgin and Burke's, which specialises in "dark" wizarding artefacts, and is mentioned in several of the books. A lot more info, relevant to HP, here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_of_Glory The name "hand of glory" is a translation of French "main de gloire", which is a corruption of "mandragore" - IOW, mandragora or mandrake (mandrakes appear later in C of S) Hope that helps. The reaction when Dobby started punishing himself was absolutely priceless. Filch loves his cat. A billion points to Filch for that, at least. Everything is better with cats. *S* pecial *A* wards for *S* ervices to the *S* chool = *Sass* - which are the books (and films) are full of.

    The Weasleys sort of adopt Harry, in a way. Their mother considers Harry as good as a son to her by the fifth book. He has to live with the Dursleys for a while before he comes of age because of the blood protection from his mother dying to save him. Petunia is the only family he has left, and letting him in their house keeps Lily's protection alive because of her sister being Harry's only maternal family. The Dursleys like Harry out of the way, but they don't want him to be happy, either. In a later book, the Weasleys invite him to the Quidditch World Cup, and Vernon would be happy to be rid of Harry, but doesn't want him to enjoy himself. He eventually said Harry could go, but only because Harry had this new threat (I'll wait until Prisoner of Azkaban as you'll have some awareness of what the threat is by the end of that one).

A threat must be executable to be effective, but Dumbledore needs them to take care of Harry, so he can't really do anything to them. He simply explained that Harry would be uniquely protected under their roof and even they where human enough to not want Harry dead.

They hated his mom (his aunt's sister) and dad and they're getting satisfaction from keeping their child under their control. But also, and the easiest answer, he is their labor worker. He cleans, cooks, and probably mows their yard. Among other chores. Without him they'd have to do it themselves (or hire someone else).

    I was already to old to be the prime audience for the books. She did a very smart thing by making each book a bit darker and more serious than the ones before. The first book was aimed at the preteen market pretty much if not even younger kids. So with each book, the subject matter and themes matured along with the generation that was reading the books. In a way, the movies did it yet again for a later generation. Pretty smart to keep the kids who read the first one interested until the last one. Of course, now that one can just sit and binge the movies, it's probably not best to let young kids watch them all straight away. Well, not as long as the parents don't mind getting woken up from the screams of their kids nightmares.

The house elves being the wizarding world equivalent of slavery and in the wizarding world they don't discriminate the same way people do in our society, but as an adult you notice that the way Lucius Malfoy talks about Hermione's parents in the book shop and Draco referring to Hermione herself with derogatory terms, it's like their version of the discrimination that would shock you in real life but those bits just went over my head when I was a kid.
