Oh it wasn't so easy to join the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). You had to have good reports from a college, military regiment or a factory where you studying/serving/working, you have not to be descendant from "socially opposite class" (like aristocracy or wealthy landlords), you had to gather 3 guarantors (long-term CPSU members) just to become a candidate. No single case of antisocial behaviour was allowed during the candidate term (and later, too). I know what I'm saying as I'm one of the last CPSU members, joined in 1990, tovarishchi. ✊😎

One thing: they were working camps, not concentration one. People who got sent there were mostly sent to build big projects (like hydroelectrostations or Trans-Syberian railroad) mostly for food. The MAIN difference, people didn't had to worry they'll be used in shady experiments or become firewood the next day. Otherwise, yes, you CAN'T send a person into a GULAG.
