Hey Potterheads! Today on TheThings we’re taking a trip back to the year 2000 when the casting for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone first kicked off. It’s hard to believe it’s been more than two decades since the start of the franchise but even more difficult to believe that the Harry Potter cast we know and love was almost completely different. We’re not kidding!
The Harry Potter actors have very unconventional casting stories, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. From chance meetings at the theatre to casting directors scouring London primary schools - it’s so interesting to hear these actor’s individuals stories.
And a little startling to find out that some of the cast members weren’t the first choice for their roles.
We’re pretty sure you’ll have a hard time believing how these actors got their roles - it’s wild. Did you know that the Phelps twins had no idea who they were cast as until the first day on set? Or that Tom Felton originally auditioned for two other roles before landing Draco Malfoy?
We’ll be covering almost the entire cast from Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson all the way to Alan Rickman, Tom Felton, and Helena Bonham Carter.
The paths to getting the cast we see on our screens today may have been unconventional but we wouldn’t have it any other way. What audition story did you find the most interesting? Fun Fact : The trio was once asked to write an essay on what they like about their character. Emma wrote an essay of about 5 pages, Daniel wrote an essay of 1 page and Rupert forgot about the essay and when asked about it just improvised and said he didn't write cause Ron would probably forget about such a thing

Emma was attending the Dragon School in Oxford when she audioned. An excellent prep school that encourages its pupils to develop strong philanthropic principles! P.S. It has a surprising long list of established British actors as former pupils!

When i think about the harry potter movie one thing that always blows me away is how perfect the weasleys were cast. They all honestly look like a family. I guess you could say the same for the malfoys and the dursleys. Great job all the way around with the cast. I also thought maggie smith was the perfect mcgonagal...cast as perfectly as snape was

Evanna's story always makes me cry... having now developed an eating disorder myself, I can completely put myself in her place and I'm so happy that Harry Potter helped her overcome it... I wish I can do that some day

It's amazing how each actor was perfect for their role even though some weren't originally cast and others having to audition so many times. I'm convinced that just as many adults love the books and watch the movies as children do. Harry Potter will forever be a new family favourite for millions of families as each generation falls in love with the story.

I might say it's not just the story, it's the writing, which has many layers. Rowling is a great writer.
Auditioning for a movie is a bit different than reading for TV or theater.Depending on the director’s experience and method of working, they may employ different methods of auditioning actors. It’s hard to know exactly what to expect. There are a few skills that are universally expected of actors when auditioning for a film.

My son looked exactly like Harry when he was little. He dressed up as him for Halloween, and the kids thought he really was the real Harry Potter. And as for Luna--she and I are like two peas in a pod. I love pudding and ponies--even if they're just skeletons of themselves, lol--and they love me. I had a pony try to nibble on me before, because he liked me so much. Fun stuff here

This cast was just right, now after seeing it multiple times with my kids, I can’t imagine any other actors being in the roles.
Did you know that Harry, Hagrid, Prof McGonagall, and Umbridge all starred together in David Copperfield before the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
The first Harry Potter movie is my favorite. Normally, after reading a book, I'm disappointed in the movie - but not this time! The scenes were superb! I couldn't get enough of the wand shop because it so completely surpassed my imagination. Absolutely stunning!
The cast people really brought magic to our world by setting them perfect roles .
The weasley twins actually didn't tell their parents they were auditioning and wanted to skip school so they went to audition Edit: thank you for 6 likes!! Edit 2: I found more stuff out about them... During the first movie the twins didn't know who was Fred and who was George LOL so they and to bare with it

I could not picture Harry Potter without this Trio and Alan Rickman as Severus, and Ralph as Voldemort. They were just PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT for the role.
I just love the fact that they've got the right people for each HP character, I mean it's perfect. And Harry Potter series is the best film adaptation ever.
I love how half of these actors didn't even basically choose to be in the Harry Potter series, There FAMILY members convinced them too!

She is a bit too pretty, and they didn't try to make her more plain looking. I wonder who they could have cast instead that is more plain looking. If they had, the film could not have been as successful because her lines would not have flowed the way only she delivered.

They are missed by this generation and will be missed by the next
additional tidbits on the Phelp Twins - and the crew and cast - not being sure which one was playing which twins, it was a last minute decision before the first table reading that James would be Fred, and Oliver would be George. Much like the Weasleys, the Phelps would often switch places without anyone knowing the better, so the times that Molly mistakes one for the other and they correct her, the reactions are so authentic because the actors did in fact switch places.

The Series begins with them being kids ends The Series ends with them being adults that's just spectacular
What I realized was that most of them, their family or friends talked them into playing them.

i am very happy to say Ronald Weasley visited our paperchase in Brent Cross when the store decided to close and bought some lovely stuff. sutch a nice guy. And iam fortunate to have seen him face to face :).
I had no knowledge of this. And I am shocked and I can't pick any audition as my favorite one right now.
Seeing Val-de-Marne with his last nose will kill me
I just bought the entire series a month ago, watched it all over the last four weeks and now want to watch again. Am I well? Not hard to see why main actors have to go back and audition again and again. This movie has great casting and I can see Helen McCrory as Bellatrix but really liked her as Narcissa. After Harry the most import castings were: Ron, Hermione, Snape, Dumbledore twice, and Hagrid.
Doesn't matter how they entered,.... they entered and we love them so muchhhhhh
I can't imagine anyone else in any role except Imelda Staunton who played Omber. I always thought Joanna Lumley would have ben absolutely fabulous in that part. But so was Staunton.
