You ask a million footballers what moment they'd relive and they'd all give their favourite moments, winning trophies, leagues, scoring goals. But good old Slabhead would go back to possibly the most painful moment of his career against Croatia just to make at least some effort to change it.

Not going to lie I was a Maguire hater for a long time, looked down on his price tag etc but he’s a great guy, genuinely want to see him shine in an England shirt, he’ll be important for us if we’re going to go far in the Euros.

I was a Maguire admirer from the start because he was the only player who could pass the ball properly during those times without Bruno. The only player who gave hope of an attack.

New to EPL. Why do so many people hate him? He seems to work hard when I watch him. I actually thought he did pretty okay during the Euros. What are the actual criticisms people have?
@Dragonaut111
2 жыл бұрын
Horrendous anticipation, goes to sleep often in possession, positioning is horrendous often playing the other team onside, losses many 1 on 1s, will actively challenge his own players in the air during set pieces, looks uncomfortable on the ball under a press from the opposition. Honestly he just isn't a smart defender at all and a defensive liability, if you google Harry Maguire there is plenty of compilation videos which are quite shocking for an £80m defender.

I'll repost this, as yours is an intelligent question. I studied the scapegoating pretty closely, having been a fan before he was signed and a follower of Utd. I realized pretty soon on that it was mainly the mass media and Spanish/Argentinian, Irish and Arabic (i.e. England-hating) KZreadrs. They have their agendas, even in football sadly. It could be anything from deciding Mourinho won with Chelsea because he was a genius (he may be but he fixed most of the home matches using bent referees like Michael Oliver and Mike Dean), to that Mason Greenwood is a sexual predator (was found innocent) or that Sterling is English (he's 100% Jamaican), or that Rooney was the best striker in the history of English football, or that Paul Pogba is the greatest midfielder ever (singularly the furthest from the truth of the lot of them). The Utd-biased pundits needed a scapegoat that wasn't the inconvenient truth, and after the media jumped on him after his clash with Greek police, presumably wanting to virtue-signal their disapproval of the 'English thug abroad' stereotype, he was the easy target. After Harry Kane, Harry Maguire was the most high-profile anglo-saxon in football at the time. You might have noticed that the mass media hypes up every darker-skinned footballer playing and anglo-saxons aren't even allowed to play for their teams anymore. Just look at Utd's youth system. Or any large or mid-sized PL first team. It didn't used to be like that. The mob hate of Harry Maguire is, sadly, a symptom of a much larger problem in society. Plastic fans forget what Utd was like before Maguire came in. We are talking Daley "The Blindman" Blind, Ashley "master of none" Young, Phil Jones and, god bless him, Chris Smalling. And a midfield of Paul Pogba and Marouanne Fellaini. Everyone scored against them, all the time. I think my little sister once scored against them by accident. Then, in January 2020, Harry Maguire came in. Almost immediately, Utd went from fifth at their peak, to third, where they finished the season. Soon, Manchester United had the second-best defensive record in all 5 top UEFA leagues. Harry was magnificent in the air, brave on the ground, and excellently timing challenges, while becoming perhaps the best passer at the club. He equaled Pally's no-substitutions record, became the club's highest-scoring defender, and not-so-gradually, Utd started becoming one of the most successful defenses in the league. It went from pretty much everybody to pretty much nobody could score against them. In the season before Harry came, Utd finished 6th. After he arrived, they finished 3rd. The next season, they finished 2nd. That is a significant improvement in the competitiveness at the top of the Premier League. All the while, he was bullied online like nobody else short of Hitler. Seriously, I have never seen so much online hate for anyone than for Hitler, Trump and Maguire. And Harry had done absolutely nothing wrong. Pundits and presenters, however, kept the narrative rolling. Meanwhile, Harry got named in the Team of the Tournament for consecutive major international tournaments (the Euros and the World Cup). That put him ahead of all of his teammates at Manchester United. Analysts also found that he was statistically England's best player. Southgate, for all his sins, defended Harry and called out the hate, after years of impeccable service for the national team. Yes the hate continues. All the way to death threats. This is what the mass media and racism on the internet can do. Wow, I really got into that reply didn't I. Still, due to its wider consequences it does matter as an example of something even uglier than his internet bullying.
