Ya'll should pick the disk up and run in straight lines. First, it's bad on the tractor's lift arms and the disk's bearings. Second, over time you will end up with a very shallow mud pit for half of the year due to the banking that running in a circle puts on the field. Drainage isn't very good.

Several folks advised you to raise the disc when turning. With a 72 inch disc harrow I don't think it is that big of a deal. If you were pulling a twelve foot disc harrow or wider then it would be more of an issue. When I was a kid the earliest disc harrow that I operated was a pull type with no lift wheels, so you were always dragging it around corners when you turned. It was an eight foot. When transporting down the road the gangs were parallel so the discs did not dig into the road, it merely left shallow scratches. When you got to the field you would give a yank on a rope tied to a locking bar and then pull forward and the gangs would angle and you would drop the locking bar down when it was the desired angle. When finished with the field you would jerk the rope to release the locking bar and then reverse the tractor into the disc and the gangs would return to the parallel position for transport. Later dad bought a twelve foot hydraulic wheel disc. We pulled them with a 1955 Allis Chalmers WD45.

Hi there I was wondering if your L2501 had any problem dragging the DH 1572 through ground. I have an l2501 also and was concerned this harrow was too heavy to drag it with only 25 horse power. Without bogging down. Thanks!

Wow! That disc really shreds the ground. I would raise the disc on the corners as it puts a lot of twist on your three point hitch. Nice video, Thanks!

I use to do that discus every spring on the farm as a boy in the 70's before we planted the corn fields. Harrow are some times called spring tooth and are for taking twitch grass out of the dirt. In the fall of the year we would use a 3 furrow plow to turn the ground over then covered it with cow manure till spring then mix it in with Discus that you are using just before we planted.

Wow I've never seen disc eat that much ground first pass. Nice.

My dads 6’ homemade disc will. It’s got 4 gangs of 5 front two gangs are serrated tillers while the back two are smooth “coulters” his disc weighs about a thousand pounds as my dad tends to make stuff hard to steal. And hard to break. My dads disc will go through uncut grass like butter just because it weighs so much. My dad averaged it and it has like 55lbs per disc. Which in the case of my 5’ king Kutter disc it weighs about 420lbs I’ll have to go 4-5 passes to get one spot to look similar to that. And what isn’t hit the first pass stays most of the time while the stuff that is hit and broken up turns into a powder

After using a OT-30(8n) 30Hp tractor, & a newer Ford tractor. I have just bought a Kubota L4701, with Front loader, backhoe, box blade & tiller. You would have done better with a tiller, I know, I have a disk, a turn plow & the big disk (30") plow, pole hole digger, culturvater, two row planter & hay equitment. However the disk will do the job with a cress cross pattern. I got it for the backhoe & the tiller mainly, the front loader will be used for moving wood chips & compost to the perential vegetable & fruit beds.

Is the DEF Filter that makes it use so much more fuel, or does the Kubota run at much higher RPMs?

I talked to my Local dealer this week about trading in my 3901 for a 4701. They told me it was about 4,500 more than what mine was. I traded in my 2501 three years ago to get the 3901. Now I have just 370 hours on it.

I grew up farming in Indiana.....you need to lift the disc when you get to your end rows turn the tractor around line up where you need to go and set down the disc and start again. Leaving your disc down and turning is hard on your disc blades and the bearing and you will cause premature failure.

Good points all. This area that we were discing was so small that it made those type of turns impossible. In our bigger areas we do raise it up at the end of each row.

I have the same l4701 and i traded a 1968 ford 3000 and if i knew then what i know now i would had kept my Ford 3000. The ole ford would pull my yard box full of rock or dirt with no problem where the Kubota has to stay in four wheel drive the loader is nice at times but over all i miss my ford 3000

I miss my Ford too, it was uncomplicated and strong as an ox. I get nervous putting the Kubota under too much strain, I guess because I have so much invested in it. It may be silly, but I like the black smoke from the vertical pipe on the Ford, instead of the choked exhaust buried under the hood of the Kubota. But I do like the front end loader and the 4 wheel drive of the orange tractors very much.

Milk and Honey Homestead yes sir my ford was the same way . I’ve styled out my Kubota before and the ole ford i was comfortable riding on hills side ways where with my Kubota I’m not so much let’s just say my butt sucks to the seat a bit lol

Just run your RPM’s at PTO speed and you will not notice the regen when it happens. Have fun out there

Nice work. I just got my MX6000, not to far south of you in FL. I'm also a beginner and looking to start growing, so I want to ask you something about that. After you disc and till, do you put an herbicide down and let it sit for awhile before you plant again? Thank you.

Learn from others mistakes. The pins you show at very beginning used to adjust the disc from straight to X, should be turn upside down from what you have in this video. At present, if your R-clip comes out, your pin can and will fall and all hell will break loose. If you drop the pin in from the top, and the R-clip comes out, your pin will likely remain. Just a friendly tip.

Believe it or not the pins came that way on the implement when I bought it, (upside down). After adjusting the disc a few times, it became apparent that what you just described was absolutely right. I now put them in pins down.

Definitely gonna break those discs while turning, if you haven’t already. Fine tractor and disc harrow you have though.

That’s my thought. My cousin was turning with his disc up and the one time he had it down he hit a large oak tree root and ripped the front left gang off the disc completely. He shouldn’t have had a 6’ disc on the 100hp tractor anyway in my opinion

Pick your equipment up when turning.

You need to lift the harrow up when you go to turn and you also need to run in the highest low range gear and take off in the highest RMP so that it will cut better and throw the dirt up because all you were doing was almost like fluffing it

So 4 years later how has the tractor held up for you? I'm looking to purchase one in the next coming year and been researching this one.

I haven't farmed in decades, but plowing is essential in my opinion for a healthy soil. Taken one step further, plant a clover or other legume and let it grow for two years or so and let your cattle graze it for at least a year before turning it under. The legume puts nitrogen back into the soil and the clover adds humus adding structure and natural faults for germination and root development as well as developing a healthy micro organism population. If done right, you can eliminate the cost and downside of commercial fertilizer completely. To add a fully modern twist, use an 8' tiller for the pulverizing. Makes a perfect seed bed. Your potatoes should develop bigger because of the soil pulverization. I would plow at least every other year. We plowed annually on our family farm in the 50's and 60's. Yes, I have a degree in Ag from 1971 LOL. I think no till is a mistake and tilling without plowing just creates hard pan. JMHO Very nice video. I am subscribed!

We love the harrow. It's pretty versatile, and we've used it for mounding potato rows by lifting up the front disks, off of the ground, and angling the back to mostly use the outer disks and then overlapping each row to get the desired row width. For tearing up hard ground, in preparation for tilling there's nothing better.

Do you think your tractor would pull a wider model disk. I have the same tractor and iam looking to get a disk. Seems to pull that 72" easily

My dads MX5100 which has 52hp will pul a 6’ homemade disc that weighs about 1000lbs just fine. I would imagine my dads could pull an 8’ disc and this l4701 could probably easily pull a 7’

The DPF is silly but don't sweat it. No big deal.

Have to compare total tractor weights plus type of operation. The Kubota has 47 HP with the Ford at 36 HP 25 % more HP in the L4701. You have to have a single pin hitch with a swinging drawbar to pull around turns.

Ford 3000 in video has 47 engine hp. PTO is around 40 depending on transmission. Same as 4701.

I have the same model discs paired with an MX5600. I tried disking today but it looks like it juat glides over the ground. And i see you dont have no trouble getting the job done. Im in deep south texas.

We have very sandy soil here. It's great for tilling, but the rain washes fertilizer and minerals right through it.

Teacher her to lift up the harrow at the end of the field to turn around! You will bend your lift arms trying to turn very sharp at the ends!

Lift harrow when turning !!!!!! Or reversing !!!!! Didnt the salesman advise u on how to use his implements???

That's what I was thinking too. It's a disk--not a harrow.

I've been thinking about getting the $1,500 disk harrow from everything attachments, how much is the cost of that Land Pride.

@@tsafa If you're not using it for anything but aggressive harrowing, the EA angle iron harrow is the better choice. Cheaper than a box style harrow and stronger. If your tractor is a similar L4701, get the 78" 20 wheel with 18" discs. Heavy enough and angled for quick harrow work. Good luck!

@@joeyw4442 I ended up going with the $2,500 disc harrow. 500 lb. It's a good thing I went with the heavy disk harrow. I have very thick soil even after I plow it. I ended up strapping down 300 lb of rubber mats on top for extra weight

​@@tsafa Nice! I've got the EA angle iron 78" 20 wheel with 18" discs. 625 lbs and I added another 300 lbs, like you. The larger discs and agressive 21 degree angle works very well for my needs. A few passes on my hard ground chews it up good. Will be much easier and quicker every year I harrow. For the $1900 I paid, it is exactly what I wanted. Built extermely well. Should last the rest of my days. But I DO love all my Land Pride implements. They are very well made too. Good luck to you and enjoy your equipment and time on the tractor. I find it does wonders for my health and mentality. 🙂

It's DPF not DEF. DEF is another type of emissions control system. Don't fear regens. Most of the time you wouldn't know they were happening if it didn't tell you. The fuel consumption is surprising. Modern diesels are way more efficient even including regen fuel.

You are not suppose to turn with a disc

It does NOT have def. That is diesel exhaust fluid. That reduces nox. Kubota uses egr on engine to reduce nox so def is not needed. For pm aka soot control it has a DPF diesel particulate filter! If it hasnt done a regen then that is NOT why it uses more fuel! It uses more fuel because of the egr. Exhaust gas recirculation. Great for reducing nox emissions but is horrible for fuel economy. Plus u have 4wd and doing MORE with it vs the old ford. Were u disking with the ford and it used less fuel? I doubt it.

this tractor got lot more weight than your ford tractor does , will burn a bit more DIESEL FUEL
