Harmonic Tuning - An exploration beyond equal temperament...

Музыка

From re-pitching Equal Temperament - to alt tunings - to harmonic tuning.
Let's dive in and talk a little bit about my journey with this topic and why I feel there is an importance in the quest for harmonic tuning in the dissonant world of Equal Temperament.

If anyone is out there that has watched this and knows how to apply Maria Renold's tuning in Ableton, if you could please share the instructions of how to do so that would be of great help to me. Thanks in advance!!

This is an interesting topic on how sound affects humans. However, so far, besides esoterics, there isn't much visibility. When discussing these topics, it's necessary to separate two themes: 1) the law by which tempering occurs, and 2) the frequency in hertz of the note from which musical tuning is derived.

So glad to see you doing videos! This was great. Been loving experimenting with microtonal music. Check out Sevish for some wild examples as well.

Hi Merkaba's Music, thank you for your beautiful information. Could you please tell me which is the correct file for omnisphere 2, from your dropbox link? The ''.tun'' or the ''2.tun'' ? What's the difference? - Also, the frequencies in the photo with the yellow background are from "Maria Renold's book? - And why the script in the Dropbox files says " 12-tone Pythagorean scale " and not " Maria Renold's scale "? Are they the same?

Hey do you think that Maria Renold Tuning v2 is better than v1?

  • @ToniMazzotti

Renold 2 is an open system, that is, with octaves larger than doubles and halves. Extending the fifths and considering it again as a spiral of fifths. Temperament is the name given to the distribution of errors resulting from the kneading of the fifths. Renold 2 extended the fifths to their normal size and so it is not considered a temperament. In fact, Maria Renold said that this is an untempered scale. Renold 1 is a temperament with a "close system", that is, octaves as doubles and halves, and crumpled fifths. I managed to make a scale file with Renold 2, and also other recent temperament (close system) made for 432 Hz called "Precise Temperament Tuning", by Robert E Grant. if you want to test it, tell me your email.

So cool you take time to make video like this ! Big thanks (Im trying to do this in ableton and it's a pain there is 0 option for that, and the microtuner plugin needs Max4live Access, and all the plugins i use don't have tuning option )

like you said it takes years to hear or feel the difference so for the listener or dancer it doesn't matter...how does analogue gear react when the tuning is changing as part of the sound?

  • @merkabasmusic

It absolutely matters. Just because something is subtle that doesn't mean that the effect is profound. On a cellular level the effect it massive. If you look at the cymatics of what happens in water between standard ET tuning and a tuning with harmonic intervals the difference is huge. Now apply that to the knowing that you are mostly water and all your cells are submerged in water. I hope to make a cymatics video on this topic one day. But you can search and find a few that exist. Analog 'drift' is part of the magic of analog and we just accept that it's something we have to live with.

Great content, are you able to share the tuning file for maria reynolds 432hz. Perhaps it's just a matter of putting in those frequencies on the image you showed.. I've just never made a tuning file.

Tun. File plus other formats can be downloaded here for maria reynolds tuning. Goes through some of the math behind the tuning aswell. I always just dropped -32 cents.. but love hearing that this is a step deeper into the harmonic channel. Thanks again for sharing 😊

Unfortunately there are only a couple of synths that do it. I can't remember the others off the top of my head. In Logic and Cubase you can use Hermode Tuning. Perhaps there is a way to use software to alter midi messages from MIDI keys via the computer and out to an external synth in real time. I'm sure there is a wizard out there who can create something like that. :)
