What is unique about both the Mid 6 and Moe boards is they both loved to be surfed with your back foot on the tail, kinda like a short board. The moe does amazing with sloppier faced waves and the mid 6 is much better in steeper or faster wave faces. When you hit flat sections you have to move forward on the board but wants a surfer who does performance hard turns off of the tail.

Great board, got the 7'6 about a year ago after I snapped my longboard and wanted more performance but with good paddle in still. Ride as a quad in anything from knee high to well overheated, great when waves get bigger but still fun in smaller surf as easy to turn back and stay in pocket. Had to force myself to stop taking out every session and ride some shortboards again. Will be a board that will be a keeper.

I got the 7'0" and 7'6". I feel they're two completely different boards, with regards to rocker, rails, thickness. Harley Ingleby does state that the 7'6" is "chunkier" version and doesn't fall directly in the middle between the 7'0" and 7'10" models. I agree. The rails are noticeably fuller with the 7'6". The 7'6" paddles well. It's fast, but will catch the nose if you start going too steep. The rocker is noticeably flatter. It still turns well, but not as pocket friendly as the 7'0". But I love both. They both handle differing conditions.

I'm getting a used 7'10" today for Nth Shore, O'ahu. Hope it works for me! My friend has the same model and loves it in bigger waves. Hope it works for me as, even used, it's not cheap.I am going to start with H4 quads and go from there. I appreciate your reviews, they are to the point and helpful.

Nice, enjoy it Ray! The HI quads are so much fun and it's still really manoeuvrable with them in, despite their XL size. Let me know how you get on with it!

My first channel bottom sine surfing Alan Byrnes. Love the Mid 6. The Punchier the waves the better it goes. Must say the only down side is the pintail doesn't have as much tail area as I like. Other than lacking in lack lustre waves, it's a 100% awesome addition to the quiver.

@@StokedForTravel as a quad the ci large uprights front with med reactor rears . Thruster use the firewire dan mann ones ( the same kevin shultz used in one of his vid clips ) mucked around with other setups / fins, but found the above mentioned the best for me

The board is too tight (the tail is too pinny) but it's reasonable once you figure the board out (which can take a while). Thunderbolt construction is solid and good (so the steep price may not be too hefty). Not overly floaty given it is EPS. For me at 100kg it goes way better with a thruster set-up and only medium Reactors, or even small Reactors (the board will not slide out). You do not need large fins, and you do not need quads. Note all the videos have relatively light guys surfing good sized, nice waves. So any board would go well in those conditions, and the HI Mid 6 does indeed in reasonable waves. Note the 7' board is only 40 litres, which isn't enough for heavier guys (but you can deal with it). It also has a lot of nose rocker (which does help on steep late drops) and you will find you can paddle it and take off in three or more different positions up and down the board. Duck diving it is just like a shortboard, although obviously not quite as easy. Duck diving when it's big and meaty will deliver some nice beatdowns. All up a good board, but Tolhurst should offer a range of shapes and litres in Thunderbolt. Personally I'd have the widest point down below half way, a wider tail, maybe a swallow tail, maybe with flyers, a more pinny nose (like a Hawaii board), more litres on the 7' board and the channels need to be quite a bit deeper. Like the guy said, it will take you a few surfs to get used to so stick with it and try different fin combos to suit your own style and weight.

Thanks for sharing that feedback - interesting to hear what fin setups have been working well for you too, seems it's pretty versatile in that respect with what others have been saying they're using in it. From what you're looking for in a board the Cape Collective Broken Arrow sounds like it could be a really solid shout (you can custom order with channels) and it's a weapon in a range of waves

Super review again - would get one if I didnt already have one (7ft) :) - sits above my 7ft Ova for performance in punchier bigger waves as you found - have a an outlier as well in Thunderbolt which is great as well - Now the challenge is trying to fit a S&B in thrunderbolt into the mix - had one in LFT and liked it before being seduced by you yootoobers to get a CI mid and then a Twin tracker and then a mid 6 then an Ova and then an outlier and then a..... Its an addiction but a wonderous one :) Keep the review coming - especially the mids for us older "groms"

Stoked to hear you enjoyed it Mike and you're frothing on your Mid 6! What fin setup are you using on the 6 and the Ova? I've been riding the Ova for the last few months (review coming soon!) and loving it alongside the Mid 6 too! Looks like Thunderbolt and Firewire are parting ways so if you're looking to grab the SS&B I'd get that locked in pretty quick!

Ride the 6 as a quad with AM's mainly and been using the same for the Ova or a two plus 1 depending on the waves - think I am preferring it as a quad as the outlier I have is a single - I am surprised with the thunderbolt /firewire moves - think the tech is great - have had a few PU boards from Lost and CI recently and they are quite battered when I strip the wax off and I think I am quite light on my boards ( though Singapore airlines are a diff story.... @@StokedForTravel

Indeed Thunderbolt is such a solid construction, certainly way more robust than PU for sure. Haven't tested out any of the Love Machine boards, but a friend of mine is hoping to grab one soon, so I might have to steal it for a review!haha

Hi Mike, great to read your review. I'm stuck between a mid 6 and an Ova for South coast UK waves. I've got rid of my seaside as I found it great in a quiet line up but when busy I was getting beaten up by longboarders and foamies! I want a mid to be able to get into fatter waves but do shape up. Would you say the mid 6 has enough glide / paddle power? Is the Ova difficult to duck dive compared to the mid 6?

I got the 7'0" Ova (47L) and it is really fun. Lots of foam in front of board so paddles great and gets into wave easily. Light enough that it turns well once you get your back foot on the tail pad. Overall I would say super fun and user friendly board, but probably not quite as high performance as Mid 6 after seeing Mid 6 in the shop (but not surfing it). I've surfed Ova from overhead to waist high and it goes great. More point breaks and beach breaks so can't speak to steeper barreling waves. So far I've been preferring quad and twin fin + trailer and both go well, but would like to try it more with single fin on some softer waves too. I'm about 88kg and the 47L can be tough to duck dive effectively. I'm coming up from a 35L Evo so might try the Mid 6 as I think I could duck dive it a little better while still getting the benefit of 5L extra paddling. If you're coming down from long board or more intermediate I would go for Ova and if you're coming up from a more high performance short board and just looking for little extra paddle without sacrificing performance (or easier duck diving) I bet Mid 6 would be a little better.

I've got a 7-6 OVA but not liking it so far. The board is to rigid and stiff no flex at all which thunderbolt technology is supposed to give you. It's like a surf school board or a rental board......getting ready to move on from it! On the flip side my HI Diamond Drive rocks.....best longboard I have ever owned....I would highly recommend it you won't be dissapointed!!

Hi, you mentioned in your video that the Seaside and Beyond is being made in the Thunderbolt Tech. I can't seem to find anything online about it. Is this something that is happening soon? Cheers Stuart

Hi, I love your review ! I do hesitate between the 7" and the 7'10. I am 5'6 tall for 156lbs. I am 32yo I usually surf shortboards but I would love a mid length for long waves big walls up to 10fts. I surf in the bask country of France. The 7" seems great but I wonder if I ll have enough paddle to catch the bomb when It's getting bigger. In an other hand I wonder it the 7'10 is not too big for me. I have heard that the 7'6 is not in between but more for surfers who need more volume. Thanks for you advices ! Tom

Stoked you enjoyed it Thomas! Given your height and weight I'd say the 7'0 will be a solid choice and potentially the 7'10 will end up being too much board and you'll find it a little harder to surf with that extra rail line, espeically if you're used to something much shorter.

Hey Would you recomend takayama 7'6 egg for everyday beach break as a one board quiver ? 60 yo not looking for performance, but easy pop up, stability and still maneuverable. Longboard/shortboard thing. Waves fron knee to head high, slow or punchy. Good for late take off ? Thanks

Hey Daniel, unfortunately I haven’t surfed that model yet so can’t really lend any advice on it. I know the Takayama Scorpion is a pretty epic model though if you haven’t already checked that one out. The Harley Ingleby Moe is another great option that will tick all those boxes too

I'd say for windy/bumpy conditions it wont be ideal - but I do have a few mates over in the UK who froth on theirs. For those extra windy days the weight of PU can certainly help things

Looking for a mid length that paddles great and can carve. I currently ride a Seaside for everyday surf here is SoCal (HB & Newport Jetties), but wanting a mid length for the head high and bigger days when the Seaside feels small. Which would be better, seaside and beyond or mid 6? If mid 6, I also can’t decide between the 7’ and the 7’6. I’m a solid intermediate, 5’11 185lbs.

Oooooo that’s a tough one, both are heaps of fun in that size surf to be honest! If the waves are a bit punchier/hollower the Mid 6 will win out slightly, but also if you’re loving the Seaside the SSB will be a super easy transition. If you do go Mid 6 I’ve just picked up the 7’0 option which does drop the paddle power a tad but also much easier to throw it around. 🤙

⁠@@StokedForTravel Thanks for the feedback. Would you say the 7’0 mid 6 will feel like a better paddler compared to my 5’8 seaside? I could see where you would notice the drop in paddle power coming down from the 7’6 board. I’m really trying to decide between getting a mini Stepup short board like a Phantom XL, or a mid length like the mid 6 or seaside and beyond. Ease of paddling is my top priority, followed by speed and carving ability. Either way I’ll be using this for good days when it’s head high to overhead and I need more board

If you're looking for one that has a wider range of use then the SSB has a better smaller wave game than the Mid 6. Paddle power wise you'll probably find the Mid 6 easier to paddle than the Seaside, it's a lot of extra length. From what you've said though I'd be leaning to the SSB option, especially if you can grab one of the ones they've released in Thunderbolt

@@rharmston hahaha no worries at all! Personally I had the 6'8 and went great, but also tested out the 7'0 and it was heaps of fun too. Personally if you're going into the mid length, go all in, 7'0 for the win I reckon!

Put a pad on it. You have to know where your back foot is as you need to move about on mids just like you do with a mal.

For longer boards (anything over 6’6) I tend not you use a tailpad because of the fact I’m moving around so much and don’t have my back foot placed in the same spot each time. Personal preference though

I've got the 7'0 ". This plan shape just takes me back to what I used to ride but with a modern tech. It's insanely good way better than anything else I've ridden. Sometimes, it makes me look better than I possibly am, but I'll take that every day. I run the Large FCS 2 Reactors in quad with a nubster. It does need some punch in the wave, but when it's not suited, I've got that covered with other boards for those days, so it's a win, win. They are a bit $$$$ but they're worth every $. I lent it to a mate of mine that has attitude towards mid lengths. Now I can't get the bastard away from it. Letting him try that board is my only real regret.

@Craig Phillips I've also got the 7'0 S&B & The Big Baron. For me, mid lengths are a breath of fresh air. I see a lot of younger surfers with "bad habits" or inappropriate boards for their ability. These modern mids can teach you a lot about correct surf techniques. The mid 6 is now my go-to performance board & it goes like shit out of a ShangHai.
