Harley-Davidson Road Glide Bike Comparison | New vs Old (Is The 2024 Better?)

Harley-Davidson® Introduced the Road Glide back in 1998 as a replacement for the Tour Glide, which was released in 1979 as part of the 1980 line-up. With its frame-mounted fairing that provided exceptional wind coverage and its incredible handling, the Road Glide quickly became one of Harley’s most popular bikes. The Road Glide saw many updates over the years and in 2016, Harley introduced the Milwaukee-Eight Engine to all their touring models, including the beloved Road Glide and inspired seasoned Harley veterans as well as a whole new generation of riders to add a bagger to their quiver.
What made the Milwaukee-Eight so special? Well, the Harley-Davidson® Milwaukee-Eight engine is the ninth generation of "big twin" engines developed by the company, but only Harley's fourth all-new Big Twin in 80 years, first introduced in 2016. These engines differ from the traditional Harley Big Twin engines in that there are four valves per cylinder, totaling eight valves, hence the name. It also marked a return to the single-camshaft configuration as used on previous Harley Big Twin Engines from 1936 to 1999. In addition, the engines all have internal counterbalancers, whereas Twin Cams were counterbalanced only on Softail models, where the engine was rigidly mounted. With increased torque and fuel efficiency, it came as an easy decision to get the M8 on Harley’s Touring Models.
We have been riding the M8 version of the Road Glide for years, with thousands of miles clocked in all around the country. From Sturgis to the Drag Strip with Nitrous, and a few jumps along the way, we have made sure to put our 2020 and 2022 Road Glides to the test and they have held up to everything we could throw at them. Coming in to 2024, we all heard rumors of a new iteration of the Road Glide being introduced. But what could Harley do to make this already incredible platform any better?
Well, they made them lighter, gave them more power, and made sure they handled like a dream. With the base model now being equipped with a 117” M8 (opposed to the 107” M8 seen on the previous model’s “standard” model), Harley was able to produce 22% more horsepower and 19% more peak torque. Overall, the bike remains fairly similar to its older brother, however. So, this leads to one important question. Is the 2024 Road Glide worth the investment? Or should you just invest in upgrading your current M8 Road Glide?
The answer to those questions is more subjective from rider to rider which is why we decided to break down the key differences between these bikes in this video and give you our honest feedback on whether you should keep your current M8 Road Glide or upgrade to the all-new 2024 Harley-Davidson® Road Glide. Hit play and learn a thing or two about these bikes!

While not a Road Glide, I purchased the new 2024 Street Glide, and one thing they did touch on, but want to really hammer home, that lighter feeling in the 2024 models really sealed the deal for me. I'm average height and slightly above average strength, and getting the 2024 off the kick stand compared to a 2023 or even a 2022 was super noticeable. Great video and keep on riding!

I love....love....love my brand new looking 2015 RGD with a 2 stage 103. Yes, I could go to my local Harley-Davidson dealer and purchase a new 2024 RG. But why? My 2015 Road glide has plenty of power, it looks awesome, and it does everything the newer bikes do while maintaining the classic Harley-Davidson experience.

For $30k, I was torn between a 24 Road Glide and a 19 Road Glide CVO Stage 4 with low miles. I decided on the 19 CVO. Happy with it, but just realized I have the fluid transfer problem after changing my fluids yesterday. That 24 Blue Burst still catches my eye.

Started working at a harley dealer back in april.. the 24 road glide a new fairing that was wind tunnel tested and tested by riders.. significantly reduces wind buffeting.. the water cooling was also rerouted and the rear cylinder is 40 degrees cooler when sitting in traffic.. makes a massive difference and wont have you stripping your pants off coz "your balls was hot".. another important thing to mention is the upgraded suspension.. re-tuned forks, and the rear end is set up for an additional 50% suspension travel.. also, the adjustability and the ease of adjustment is much easier and can be tuned much more than factory suspension on previous years.. the road glide also has better factory bars that puts you in a much better seating position.. the street glide still has short little bars.. they feel pretty gross.. The GPS isn't monthly, it's 400 for 3 years... if you're living in today's world and don't have apple car play or android auto, you're going to have to pay it if you want GPS.. its very easy to set up your phone to have GPS without having to pay for the harley stuff

had a 2018 RG, just under 60k, got the new 24 standard couple months ago, pushing 5 k so far, absolutely love it, so far changed bars, new seat, and added slider style saddlebag bag guards, tab slip ons, average 46mpg highest mph was 50.1 consistent at 46 MPG. I'm loving it. Got a couple more 1000 plus trips planned this month and July.. I'm loving this 117 and the controls are a non issue, pretty ergonomic. it would be nice to have a VERY LOW dim blue or orange light on the controls at night, especially the right side cluster, just my opinion. Stay safe Really Appreciate your channel and products!!! those other guys, they're pretty awesome as well😂😂❤❤❤

100% agree about the 24 throttle. When I first picked up my 24 CVO RG i was sitting there and was reaching the thumb over to change tracks on a song at the light and I reved the shit out of the throttle lol.. The hand controls IMO are far far too fat and hard to reach. I am slowly getting used to reaching those thumb sticks but man with gloves it just feels clunky. Love the new fairing on the RG. I was a SG guy for life so I thought, till I saw the new RG fairing in person and now I own one. Great video!

  • @leo8738
    @leo87382 ай бұрын

The other difference is while the headlight on both is LED, you still have incandescent stop/turn/tail lights on the non 24 models to change out. Also if you want the blacked out trim option instead of chrome, you save a little as only the sg/rg specials had the blacked out trim, which cost more than the standard.

I also love my 2017 as it's the hard candy hot red flake with the flames and big flake paint. The 2024 is so much smoother and more comfortable and I always hated older RG's, but love this new one.

Good comparison, but the frame is outdated on these bikes , Harley has made no updates to it since 2009. They need to go to a lightweight aluminum frame with a rear monoshock that has 5" of travel like Indian motorcycles use. The Indian suspension is also adjustable thru the infotainment screen. I dont care for Indians but they do have a much smoother ride over bad road surfaces than the motor companys offerings.

You able to get better fuel economy because of the variable valve timing VVT. Gives you better control of the valve. The interesting thing is the 2024 CVO ST does not use this system. I wonder if we can get Luke’s take on as to why? As well as plans for developing camshafts for both systems in the near future

For once, EU get luckier: satellite navigation is standard on ours. Also pricing, i would have compared with the old ST: similar engine and riding aids.

the 2024 RG is NOT a base model. Its the only model The 117 is NOT the base model engine. Its the only engine. Seems people just cant understand this. The ST and 121 are CVO only. Embedded navigation is NOT monthly. Its $350 every 3 years. The rest of the video pretty awesome.

The new bags have a full two liters more capacity. So that .1CF represents two full liters more storage space. That really is a lot. I just don't like the short look of the bags. I need the bags to cover up the ugly exhausts as much as possible on any bike.

It is just crazy they still haven't put on better front and rear suspension. Like just throw on inverted forks already. It should be standard now. Indian throws it on their challengers for about the same price. And dual disc brembos. I think if Harley did that they would see a better return of customers and new customers.

The brakes are Brembo. Just Harley branded. They put the bigger brembos and inverted forks on the CVOs last year. And the Challenger still is soooo ugly compared to the RG.

Maybe 20 YEARS ago bud! Now we go fast. Street glides shimmy and shake, Roadglides cut through the wind and even at 150 mine stays stable as fuhhhq. Street glide same engine falls behind on highway. My buds that own street glides all seem to fear high speed...mainly because the street glide is not made to be aerodynamic. Get with it, take a road glide test run over 100 mph and learn why roadies rule

Biggest complaint trying to sell the 2024s is no one likes the new infotainment and the bulky ugly switch housings. Most of my customers like the 2024s but I have more people keeping their earlier m8 roadglides/street glides because of the new tech they dont care for. 🤷‍♂️
