Harley Davidson Rich Idle, Black Smoke, Petcock Vacuum Leaking Raw fuel

Not a permanent fix, only if you are stranded on side of road from cheap vacuum operated shut off valve. Taiyo Giken vacuum operated petcock seal failed allowing fuel to bypass carb via vacuum port and over rich engine while running. Temporarily converting petcock to eliminate troublesome vacuum valve.
If your eyes burn and bike won't idle then see if gas come out of your petcock vacuum line when vacuum is applied...

Thanks for the video. I ended up buying a new one....which no longer has the drain port (must have been giving too many people trouble), but I also ended up keeping my old one and doing this same thing in the case of an emergency and I need something that works temporarily. I will say, the new Harley petcocks are much improved, and have a nice tactile feel when switching between run/reserve/off.

Alot of haters on here all those years ago til now talking out of their ass. First off I am a certified Harley Davidson Tech. second it is a vacum operated petcock so if the diaphram inside the pet cock is torn or has deteriorated you lose vacum. No vacum then feul dumps from your tank directly into the intake behind the cv carb. No amount of adjusting the carb fuel air mixture will balance out and it causes an extremely rich condition producing black smoke from exhaust. His fix is temporary only and IT DOES WORK TEMP. Even if you turn a petcock off that has this issue gasoline will continue to dump into the intake and flood into cylinders and past rings into heads. You can plug off the vacum line and the flange on the petcock where the vaccum line attaches leave petcock open to get your ass home then turn off the petcock, If you have sufficiently plugged the flange on the petcock it will not leak gas into the motor. if you do not get it plugged good enough it will pour gas like a faucet. You have to have the vacum or your carb cant pull fuel. It does work as a temp fix only. I have done this myself to get home and not pour a couple gallons of gas into a motor that isnt running flooding my carport. A new petcock is 25$ and up not 100$ Being a mouthy cunt and a keyboard cowboy shooting down a guy offering a legit temp fix that can help new bikers get home or make it to work until pay day and can afford a new petcock is just fucking stupid especially when the guy that made this video is actually right and the dumbass's talking shit dont even have a clue how the fuel system works in the first place. if you dont know 100% then shut the fuck up and ;earn something. honestly you guys talking shit should be ashamed because its the same basic principle your toilet works under you fucking morons!!!

My problem started when the strainer seal desegrated . replaced the $2.00 seal flushed out the fuel line pulled the carburetor cleaned out the debris. checked the vacuum fuel cutoff valve now it acts like it is not getting fuel after two or three miles down the road. Bring it back pull the fuel line apply vacuum to the cut off and get good fuel flow. Very aggravating. leave me dead in the road, then after awhile it will start go down the road and do it again. Never had this problem before in my 50 years of riding.

On yours it would be tempting to cut a piece of thin sheet metal to the pattern of the diaphragm seal make a gasket for both sides put it all back together and no more fuel cut off. eliminated with out worries of J.B. dissinagration into the carburetor.

Theres a reason why the petcock is designed that way for the sportster. I'd be surprised if it ends up running normal after that. But I definitely won't be surprised if you end up having more problems and end up running lean because the carb can't pull enough fuel. Its actually better to run rich than lean. You should just order a new petcock and no its not going to cost $100+ it dose not have to be a harley davidson OEM part hit up amazon. And make sure your carb is tuned correctly if you don't have the fuel to air ratio dialed in perfect it will clearly have problems. I have a S$S carb and its worth it if you know how to tune one in because they are not the same as stock and definitely more finicky and sensitive. Good luck have a good one and always live to ride and ride to live and be safe out there

how will it make your bike have black smoke? that's what the needle and seat are for in the float bowl to stop the flow into the carb once the fuel bowl is full... I'm confused correct me if I'm wrong but I've never seen a harley carb with no needle and seat

So I’m not crazy for ditching the vacuum petcock all together and getting a new gravity fed one with a new screen for $30 after shipping?

So you just removed the vacuum line, plugged the hole on the petcock side. Did you do anything on the carb side? Plug hole etc.

Get rid of it, buy the PINGEL and don't sweat the price. I do this for a GREAT living, and receive nothing from PINGEL, they simply are the BEST. YOUR WELCOME. Oh and the cheap ones are just that, CHEAP. The PINGEL is rebuildable too.

Fuel does not go through that vacuum line! The port you say dumps fuel into the engine past the carb is only for vacuum that sends a signal to the vacuum petcock that lets fuel into the fuel line from the tank to the carb. The reason for this is so if you forget to turn off the petcock after a ride fuel will not drain from the tank into the carb and into the engine. If you ever rode a bike before this thing was invented you learned to remember to turn off the fuel when you turned off the engine. I think you're just making it up as you go along. Sheesh!
