An unusually bright drake lives in the very center of St. Petersburg on the Neva River. This is a kamenushka (lat. Histrionicus histrionicus).
Now he is in his best outfit.
Against a dark background, red sides and white stripes on the body, a white collar stand out, and white spots on the sides of the head look like expressive eyes. For such beauty, a stone is called a harlequin.
In the summer, the stone is less elegant. On a gray-brown background, only white spots on the head betray our hero.
For the first time, a stone was noticed in 2017 in the summer near the Peter and Paul Fortress. And for the sixth year now, the drake in the company of mallards lives in our city. It winters with them on the Kronver Strait, and the rest of the time, a friendly company stays along the embankments on the Neva, posing and receiving treats from passers-by.
They feed on mollusks, small fish, and aquatic invertebrates.
Kamenushka perfectly dives to a depth of 10 meters.
But our handsome man, along with the ducks, is not averse to competing for a bun.
Despite its small size, the rock easily overcomes all difficulties, is not afraid of waves, snowfall, or cold, dank weather. Even the wind does not blow it off the granite steps.
The usual habitat of kamenushki is the Far East, Siberia, Greenland, northwestern North America and Iceland.
The indigenous peoples of Siberia have a belief that the bodies of stones are inhabited by the souls of drowned children. Therefore, hunting them was considered a sin.
Kamenushki nest and raise chicks in rivers high in the mountains.
In autumn, the whole family goes for wintering a little south to the Pacific or Atlantic coast.
It is not known how our drake ended up alone, far from its usual habitats in St. Petersburg. Only he himself knows the answer to this riddle, but he keeps it a secret.
And we wish the beautiful brave bird a long life in the beautiful city on the Neva.

Обычное место обитания каменушек Дальний Восток, Сибирь, Гренландия, северо-запад Северной Америки и Исландия. У коренных народов Сибири есть поверье, что в тела каменушек вселяются души утонувших детей. Поэтому охотиться на них считалось грехом. Каменушки гнездятся и ростят птенцов на реках высоко в горах. Осенью вся семья отправляется на зимовку немного южнее на тихоокеанское или атлантическое побережье. Как оказался наш селезень в одиночестве вдали от привычных мест обитания в Санкт-Петербурге неизвестно. Ответ на эту загадку знает только он сам, но держит в тайне.
