Hargis on US, China Relations With Kenya, Africa

Shirley Martey Hargis, Senior China Policy Fellow at Third Way, discusses President Biden hosting Kenyan President William Ruto and the relationship Africa has with China. She states the Africa is the global foundation of the semiconductor industry, the anchor for energy transition, and shares her insight on whether or not President Biden would be meeting with President Ruto if it were not because of the influence China has in Kenya and largely the global south. Shirley speaks with Kailey Leinz and Joe Mathieu on Bloomberg's "Balance of Power."

The US isn't interested in Africa, all it's interested in is condemning China. If China went to Mars to trade and invest with Martians, the US would attach a negative label or slant to this economic activity. On debt, the biggest debt trap for Africans is Western financial interests. Cumulatively, the dollar system of commercial banks, IMF, World Bank, and sovereign bond investors constitute 80% of Africa's debt.

@@luqmanbello2343China comes with offers like "I build your roads and you pay me back. If you don't pay back, I control the road and get back my money". The US comes with offers like " I give you loans and democracy and you help me sabotage China, give me your natural resources, give me your police to help me invade Haiti..and when you can't pay loans, I give you more to criple you even though I know you are pocketing all of it." At the end of the day, África gets a road if it deals with China but with US it gets dictators, masaive debe and resources seeping out of the continent...which offer is better?

The guest says China is rigid, but they're open to trying new things, hmm. It seems to me that the US is just reacting to whatever China is doing. She made a good point that US likes to tell other countries what they need, but China would ask them what they need. When the US goes to Africa, they talk about China, but when China goes to Afraid, they talk about business and new projects.

The US only wants to have military bases in Africa to pressure countries not to work with china. There is no financial aid whatsoever just crumbs. The sectors they are investing in like green energy, flora and fauna have no direct economic impact to 99% of citizens. They are extractive industries. Either too expensive or too restrictive to have positive economic growth to the broader population. Kenyans are aware that their economic freedoms are being taken away by EU bureaucracy and US state capture. There are laws being introduced to control farmers, pastoralists, health and society as a whole. Seed dictatorship, LGBTQ+ by force, ISO certificates and ESG rules. Carbon credits have seen us lose control of our forests and water to Arabs nonetheless!!! All these neocolonial tactics WILL FAIL! Everybody can feel Europe is on its last legs and these are kicks of a dying horse. We have an FTA with EU yet we cant even meet 40% of our export quota. Avocados, tea, macadamia farmers are in financial ruin. No profits to be made by exports because the supply chain is extractive. Policies that ensure no job creation, no manufacturing industries will result in rejection of the western rule based order which dictates that Africa is a source of cheap raw materials and exploitative labour.

@@user-ci2fd8vc2f read up carbon credits. Carbon producing countries can offset their emissions by buying up carbon sinks. We have sold Mau forest to Emirates, Zimbabwe has sold most of its forest cover to emiratis. In the Congo they are killing pygmy people for encroaching forests! Do you understand that this is recolonization. There is no hard power in place to safeguard these "foreign assets" but believe me there's plans.

I Wholly agree with you. What the west used to peddle is simply not attractive. Using Kenya to stone down China has simply no benefit to Kenyans. Even if our current government goes ro bed with the US, in the next one we will find a partner that comes to us on equal terms with mutual benefits. That is not the US

Are you kidding me? you are either a CCP simp or have never done any research on US aid to Africa. You would be surprised to see how much AID the US has given to Africa over the decades. Than compare that to Chinese AID and let me know. Clearly someone sold you a cup of nonsense.
