Almost five-hundred and fifty years ago, in a district situated in West Bengal (known as Ekachakra), an exalted personality descended onto this world. At that time, the whole world was drowned by an insurmountable ocean of faults and sinful qualities. The extent of these faults was so severe, that it seemed that the globe was eclipsed by the Lord’s illusory potency. When times were starting to become extremely critical, the Supreme Lord, out of his causeless compassion sent his most dear associate into this world.
This exalted and pure personality was none other than Lord Nityananda Prabhu, an incarnation of Lord Balarama, the direct expansion of Lord Krishna. Shortly after his appearance, the sankirtan movement started taking the whole world by storm, drenching every town and village with the holy names of the Lord. Lord Nityananda Prabhu selflessly led the forefront of this movement, with his fiery preaching mood & his zeal for harinaam sankirtan. He made the impossible possible through his astounding & simply unbelievable pastimes, which demonstrate his compassion for the fallen souls.
More than five centuries later, his determination can still be felt across the whole world through this sankirtan movement. As an offering to him on the auspicious occasion of his appearance day, I shall endeavour to glorify the sankirtan movement, which he cultivated and expanded single handedly.
Before attempting to embark on this endeavour, I must admit that in comparison to the glories of this harinaam sankirtan movement, all of the words in the English dictionary seem lackluster and insignificant. No amount of pompous and crafty words can fully describe and glorify this sankirtan movement. Nevertheless, for the pleasure of Nityananda Prabhu as well as all of the Vaishnavas, I shall try to offer a few words of glorification.
We need to understand the amount of importance that the harinaam sankirtan movement carries, especially in our tradition. It should be understood that our movement first originated from this sankirtan movement. Five centuries ago, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, along with his numerous associates appeared on the Earth to lay down the foundation for spreading Krishna Consciousness. In his commentary to the Srimad Bhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada affirms the authoritativeness of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in this movement.
