Hardwick Hall | April 2022

Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire is an architecturally significant country house from the Elizabethan era, a leading example of the Elizabethan prodigy house. Built between 1590 and 1597 for Bess of Hardwick, it was designed by the architect Robert Smythson, an exponent of the Renaissance style.

Thank you. I’m an expat living in Virginia, USA and I really miss the history of U.K. I visited Hardwick Hall many years ago, it is my favorite stately home.

Hardwick Hall is a fabulous place to visit. I remember some of the rooms looking dark and feeling heavy because of the tapestries. Light was limited because of the preservation of the tapestries and we were told not to use the flash on our cameras. But this is perfectly understandable as they need to be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

There's a documentary of Hardwick Hall from the late 80's here on KZread. Place looks very different in that one. Also, I'm surprised that no one appears to ever have done an artists rendering of what the old hall looked like in its heyday.

Were the Devonshires really the "ancestors" of Bess, or her descendants?
