    Really good video Joe. I like the idea of the "bump-out" glued to the first board verses nailing it to the home first. There should be a gap or two to allow any unexpected water out. Making the trim corners before installing is also a great idea to hide any imperfections of the corner of the house. The only thing I do differently is I trim the width of one of the trim boards by the thickness of the trim boards so that the trim is equal on both sides of the corner. But I've seen/done it both ways and it looks it good either way. Great work. And thanks for taking the time to document.

    Thanks for the kind comment and tips. Regarding the corner trim boards, I just do not like cutting cementitious siding and so ripping a piece did not appeal to me for this project. Thanks again.

    Important; The ripped strip behind the bottom of your 1st course should have gaps between sections to let water drip out from behind the courses of siding. Nail it to the sill. Overhang 1st course 1/4". 1 1/4" lap is the minimum per the 2015 IRC for cementous lap siding for the courses.. Screw 1" from top edge.

    Great job and vid. Couple of general knowledge comments. Hardin specifically says you don’t have to reprime. Not that you can’t, but for those watching you don’t have to. This is me being a bit difficult because I’ve been in the cement products business for almost 30 years, but the word is cementitious, not cementatious. You’re doin’ pretty good though, I had one great contractor who called it cinnamentatious and he wasn’t doing it to be funny!

    Thanks Karen, I believe the trim boards were 3.5 inches in width and 3/4 inch in thickness. I used the same trim throughout however a wider Hardie Panel board up where the soffit meets the exterior wall.

    One p;iece of vertical corner trim is all you need. Then just butt the siding from both walls, and caulk. Saves time and money. Also, generally not a good idea to nail siding directly to sheathing/wrap instead of nailing to vertical strapping to provide air gap for drying being sheathing and back of siding. Prevents rot/mildew and is code in many places.

  • @MrKistel

    @MrKistel

    Thanks for the kind comment. I figured the primer would make for a better overall paint finish and protection. I think somewhere I saw a comparison of the painted finish with and without primer and it was a noticeable difference.

    Yes, I used deeper framing members in part to add more insulation value in the walls. This room was an addition to an existing living room. Note: this house is in a southern location. Construction and insulation techniques would likely vary if building in a more northern climate.

    They offer the planks in a few different width options here. The corner and perimeter trim is thicker then the plank siding pieces and could not be cut out of the same stock panel. If you have to cut the planks you could probably cut them any width you prefer. These I believe were 8.25 inches wide.
