RM is a genius but Suga is the greatest producer n JHope the greatest performer n dancer etc .. the video will give you alot of information of the boys and understand why they are the greatest boy group in the industry

I subscribed the first time I heard you say you'd give your honest opinion despite the reactions AND you proved it. I appreciate that. A lot of people shy away from negative feedback and just start reacting like robots to everything. Although, it does sorta hurt my feelings when people don't see BTS the way most ARMY does 😉🤪, but we are all human. My 2 adult kids and I have such crazy diverse playlists it's insane. There is some popular music that I think is shit and the three of us have fun debating each other. My daughter and I love BTS but my son likes some, finds others lukewarm. He really only listens for my sake, she has multiple playlists. I became disabled after a car accident in 2016. Music, other Kpop groups included, but more specifically BTS, has really pulled me from the darkest place I've ever been in my life. I'm not the only person who has a story like this... there are thousands. I hope you look at some of their song lyrics that aren't primarily rap as well (although they almost all have some element of rap). Their lyrics and often where the songs came from carry a lot of meaning. Anyway, I am too long-winded so I will leave it here. Look forward to more.

The band/company themselves named the fan base, actually. It's not us trying to be pretentious or anything. A.R.M.Y stands for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth, apparently (yeah, we don't talk about it much haha) which ties in with a lot of the themes and ideals BTS wants to espouse in their work (standing up for young people and speaking out against things that are unfair or unjust) and also fits in with the meaning of the band's name: BTS = Bangtan Sonyeondan which is Korean for Bulletproof Boy Scouts.

I forgot what army stood for T~T when I was a baby army I was so like confused? But at the same time they’ve moved on so far from where they came from lol. Teddy! I love your stray kids reactions and love that you’re diving into new music especially BTS! My favourite bar in this song is definitely the “am I a pig or a dog” line because it references this saying ‘you can try to put a pearl necklace on a pig but it will always be a pig” kinda saying no matter how hard you try to pretend you can never change who you are at your core, whether that be a “pig” so to speak or a “dog”. I’ve been an Army since 2016 and seeing the boys grow into men has been my favourite thing to see. I’m not in Army spaces much anymore but I enjoy reactions as people discover BTS. Love your work and I can’t wait for you to get into some of BTS’ older stuff! :)

Teddy, really appreciate your reaction to BTS. I grew up on Hip Hop and just like you know a good song is about the lyrics not just a good flow with no substance. To truly understand and appreciate BTS you have to understand the full story and know who they are, in a way, BTS makes music for those who take the time to know them, not just for sales, that’s what makes them special because once you know them you understand the context of their songs and lyrics. Persona, Shadow and Ego- are songs based on Carl Jung’s theory of personality. Knowing that going in, changes how the song is received. Someone suggested the intro to the 7 members of BTS, some of the lyrics would make a lot more sense if you know who they are. BTS ARMY tend to be fans of the 7 humans that make up BTS first and then fans of their music, it’s deeper than just a song. Ironically, BTS music promotes self love and that has gained them global love. They are not too proud to sing and talk about topics we all struggle with and that vulnerability makes them admirable. Truly appreciate you, you seem really intelligent. Looking forward to more BTS reactions, thank you for keeping an open mind!💜

RM doesn't go by Rap Monster any more, i believe because he doesn't want to be perceived as a monster. He renamed himself RM, or Real Me, to better reflect himself as he matures. He grew up in front of and with ARMY, and they defend each other vehemently. His is often a more calm and understated way of protection, haha. As a STAY first, the respect that I have for BTS is unreal. I love their cleverness in their lyrics. I love the way they carry themselves, as idols but just as people too. They are good people with a giant platform and they use it well.

The word persona in this song is actually an English-Korean play on words. RM starts the song rapping “Perso NA” - na is a variation of the Korean word for I. Person I/persona. “PersoNA. Who the hell am I?” Am I this person or is this a facade? His lyrics are a marvel.

2 things. 1. About the fandom name AMRY. ARMY is an acronym. "A.R.M.Y" stands for "Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth" 2. About RM ''PERSONA', Suga ‘Shadow’ & J-Hope ‘Ego’. The three solos represent the 3 states from Carl Jung's theory ‘Maps of the Soul’, that's why they're connected. They also co-wrote their solo's & you can hear their individual style. If you don't know about Jung's 'Map of the Soul' theory, I found a great & simple way to explain it. One way to think of Jung’s 'map of the soul' is to think of a house. Persona is like the outside (curb appeal) and is what people see as they drive by or what you present to the world. Ego is the person inside the house being who they are, maybe happy, sad, neat, or disorganized. Shadow is the stuff you try to hide in the basement that you don’t want people to see, but you own it and it’s part of the house too. Persona: Find yourself Shadow: Accept yourself Ego: Love yourself and let's go further together.

13:17 "people are not interested in my clumsiness" - meant more that people only see him as RM leader of bts and have no interest in his other "human" sides such as clumsiness. They only want to see "hero". This conflict of his public "persona" with his real self really bothered RM several years. I personally think that RM only overcame this internal conflict around 2020. That's when we start see the visible shift of how he conducts himself and what he says. Although he is still introspective and this question does not fully go away I look forward to his new album to see how he felt this past year

I'll give you a break down of the bar "three syllables of my name and but before them." This is in reference to his full name, Kim Namjoon. Back in the earlier days of BTS, there were some lyrics and some fashion choices that were considered sexist and cultural appropriation. However, being the introspective person RM is, he took time to actually learn those mistakes - he consulted professors in women studies and culture. He and BTS have even admitted to them and apologized, and now all their lyrics are reviewed before being finalized. The cultural appropriation is a common phenomenon in K-pop/rap due to their homogenous country with no idea the cultural significance, and a lot of controversial issues happen even in 2022. Despite BTS being international success, they still get a lot of flack from fans of other groups who deem that they are taking opportunities from their own groups and that BTS should step back and give others a chance. Yet without BTS, none of the other groups would have managed to break into the music charts or visit Western countries and be on late night talk shows, New Years events, and other things that BTS has done first. And so everytime a Kpop group or member had their own controversy, those fans would start spamming "but Kim Namjoon did that same thing and he wasn't canceled" in response, and it eventually blew up to being mentioned on actuons he hadn't done as well. The difference being that RM has acknowledged his past mistakes, which were few after he was informed, but no other idols tend to and instead let their fans fight for them. So, he's essentially calling out those people's projections on his "persona" and reclaiming his name back.

This actually doesn't make sense in the context of the song. Because 1. It's highly unlikely that BTS and RM himself know about this, since not even the Korean side of the fandom is aware of it. Let's remember that though the North American side of the fandom is big, it's still a part in the grand scheme of our fandom which so widely present worldwide. 2. Those haters you mentioned don't know his full name lmao Kim Nam Joon(김남즌) as you can see has 3 syllabus. It's clear that Namjoon's intention was different. 3. I recommend checking out Doolset's lyrics translation! This army also explained a bit what the meaning behind that bar means according to the context of the whole song. Only army translators can know better the meaning of our tannies' lyrics uwu Have a good day!

@@grace_mar It actually does, as the entire point of the song is regarding the many personas one can carry and how to identify yourself. Through the whole song, he explains that there is the identities people give you, and the ones you create. It ties into the Carl Jung philosophy that the entire Map of the Soul project is based on. You have a face you show strangers, your friends/family, and the one you show only yourself. And if you read the lyrics before: "The regrets that I don't even get sick of anymore I tumble with them every night until I'm disgusted And twist the irreversible time habitually There's something that raised me up again every time, The first question The three syllables of my name and the word 'but' that should come before any of those" You'll see that he's referring to past mistakes he's made and his inner turmoil over them. And even before that he talks about not being a good enough role model or inspiration because of this. And he's saying that he'll move past it just because that's what outsiders think of him versus who he truly is. Also, insinuating RM has no knowledge of fandom culture is ridiculous. How many times in lives or Bangtan bomb have we seen one of the members mention fab specific comments? They mention "Marry me Yoongi", the fan made Euphoria chant, have they have stated they read fan theories on the BTS universe story. Not to mention, RM has been monitoring social media since 2013, when he used to translate mean comments as nice ones to the other members so they wouldn't be discouraged, and the project when Tae was traveling to pretend they didn't recognize him. There was even a live within the past year that we same RM actively reporting/deleting a rude comment. BTS are aware of what goes on.

BTS went through a lot of difficulties to reach the level of success they've achieved. Interviewers have sometimes asked them, if they could go back in time, what they would do differently. They always answer the same way: they wouldn't change anything. Everything they went through, all the pain and sadness and long hours and occasional stupidity, went into creating the people they are today. They were all necessary, so they accept all of it as part of them. There's a great line in Answer: Love Yourself: "even the scars made by your own mistakes form your constellations"

I don´t feel acomplished enough to even try to decipher his lyrics, I am simply not smart enough. Map of the soul series is inspired by the works of the famous psychiatrist Carl Jung. The Map of the Soul saga is an absolute masterpiece conceptually and lyrically. It's based on Carl Jung's phychology of the Self. It starts with Intro: Persona which is about the persona you put out to the public Interlude: Shadow which is everything behind the Persona that is hidden from the public. And wrapping up with Outro: Ego which is the culmination and acceptance of all parts of the self And all the songs between follow the journey to the acceptance of the Self. But ugh I love that you understood the song and it speaks to his lyricism that even without knowledge of the concept you picked up on it perfectly

Both he and the other BTS members often post simple scenes from their lives on social media, or have gone jogging, or gone to a concert with their friends, or simply gone to dinner, or are chilling at home on the couch in front of the fireplace, it is this closeness and simplicity of their personal lives that is shared and that brings this close and intimate feeling to the fans. for that reason, the fan group doesn't stop growing, they are accessible to all people in the world, and they show themselves as "normal" people..I think!!

I've been exploring RM's discography lately and he is endlessly impressive, which I'm sure you'll get to see for yourself. Once you're done with the Persona/Shadow/Ego trilogy I'd recommend you to go back to RM - Do You and BTS - Ugh (+ explanation by DKDKTV). After that maybe you can check something from RM's 'mono' album, it has a calmer and more healing vibe, great for gloomy and rainy days (Moonchild, Uhgood and Forever Rain are my personal favorites). I don't know if you've noticed, but at the very beginning of the video the motto under Big Hit logo says 'Music & Artist for Healing'. That right there to me are the keywords and also the foundation for BTS. Bang Si-hyuk (the man who created BTS) is honestly a whole Guru and I'm not sure the group would have had the same success under a different label. How many company CEOs and a producers encourage their artists to be authentic and tell personal stories in their music rather than create whatever is trendy and sells?

The entire discography of BTS is conceptual, it is within what is called "BU" (Bangtan Universe) and is divided into eras. As part of the message of acceptance and self-love that the band delivers, to get to know ourselves, they show us the different parts of our being. "Persona" is from BTS's concept album "Map of the Soul". It is based on the psychological study of the archetypes of the soul by Carl Jung (founder of the school of analytical psychology, also called psychology of complexes and depth psychology). In this same album, the BTS RapLine focuses on 3 archetypes of our soul: - RM with "Persona", analyzing and questioning who he really is, taking off his mask. - J-hope with "Ego", self-acceptance, self-realization, self-love. - Suga with "Shadow", talking about his fears, his other self, the shadow inside him and accepting that this darkness is also part of him.

  • @raachellynn
    @raachellynn Жыл бұрын

Map of the soul is inspired by Carl Jung's psychological theory of the psyche and the individual. Basically: Ego: the central hub of what makes our individual selves, our feelings, intuition etc. Persona: the image of our ego that we project to society. It can consist of many different masks. It allows us to be flexible and blend into our environments. Example: at work we are more professional in the way we interact with others opposed to how we would react to someone on the street not in a professional setting. Shadow: kinda the dark side...the things we wouldn't want displayed for the world to see. Our inner struggles, our innermost fears. So regarding the song...RM is talking about the different personas he has to wear and also exploring the topic of "who am I?" Can you really say one persona is more real than the next one? Each persona is there for a reason. Each persona is necessary for us to survive given each individual circumstance. So yes the mask he wears as RM may be different than the mask he wears as Kim Namjoon. But all the masks are still part of who he is. "Who am I?" Will be a question we will continuously explore because each event in our lives can cause a new mask to form. It's a never ending journey of looking for oneself. Sorry for the long comment 😅. Highly recommend reacting to shadow (suga's solo) then ego (J-Hope's solo). Also regarding ARMY...as many of the other comments mentioned the company made our name. BTS= bangtan sonyeondan, which translates to bulletproof boy scouts in korean ARMY= acronym for Adorable Representative MCs for Youth. Like any fandom there are toxic people. It might seem like there are more toxic fans in ARMY but that's only because of how huge the Fandom is. If you don't like the music because it doesn't align with your musical tastes, that's fine. As long as you say it respectfully and make it about strictly the music there shouldn't be a problem. We like what we like. We don't like what we don't like.

Nice video, I'm glad this track is more to you liking 😊. To your comment 13:24 I wanted to add, since this whole album is based and dedicated to Carl Jung archetypes, his lyrics could be interpreted that beside his stage Persona other people (media/puplic or even fans) are not interested in him personally. Just this stage Persona RM is of interest to them, and therfore traits and flaws that make him uniquely him (or would even "devaluate" the stage Persona RM) are overlooked/ignored. 💜 You nice keep going (as Jimin would say) There are a lot more reverences I would love you to check out, the best one for this track would be DKDKTVs explanation video for Persona by RM. you commented the intro of the song 😉, that is a sample from their first album. Suga and Jhope's song have samples from the second and third album 👌👌. I love the little details they add.

Loved your reaction! Honestly, its so nice to see someone actually spend time on the lyrics and break them down. So many of us became fans because their lyrics and messages spoke to us. So this album, Map of the Soul, draws inspiration from Carl Jung's theory of self realization. Persona, in particular represents the part of us we display to the world. How we want others to perceive us- not just celebs, we do it too. The Shadow, would be the side you want to hide away from others, your fears and weaknesses (under the stage, away from the lights). I think RM is having an internal dialogue and his shadow keeps taunting him about his flaws and how he's a hypocrite for showing the world this persona that's like a superhero. He realizes the world doesn't care.. or forgive flaws, which is why he hesitates. He probably fears his persona has become larger than his real self (i think thats what the bigger mewtwo version of him represents lol). But he's started to accept himself, flaws et all, and tells us he will continue to 'run'.. make music, despite the voices egging him to 'stop' telling him he's undeserving.

“PERSONA” is the intro song for BTS' MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA. Sung by BTS' rapper and leader, RM, it samples the instrumental from the group’s 2014 song “Intro: Skool Luv Affair” and is reminiscent of BTS' earlier more rock influenced sound from their mini album Skool Luv Affair. The song’s message parallels the theme in “Intro: Skool Luv Affair” as well, being a song about discovering Bangtan’s style when they first started out. When we’re in love, we’re passionate When we’re singing, we’re prickly This is Bangtan style This is Bangtan style “Persona” is a self reflective song that challenges the concepts of personality and character. It depicts RM’s journey to discovering who he is as a musician and a person in general, also exploring themes of self doubt and self understanding and ending in the sentiment that he just wants to be there for someone. Here the explanations of the lyrics: WHO AM I? THE QUESTION I HAD MY WHOLE LIFE THE QUESTION WHICH I PROBABLY WON’T FIND AN ANSWER TO MY WHOLE LIFE Teased in BTS' last era, the proposed question of identity and what constitutes to who you are opens Map of the Soul : Persona as a prevalent theme. In Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’ this question was seen in “Fake Love” as: I changed everything, just for you But I don’t know me, Who are you? And then following this, the question was elaborated in Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’ in the lines from “Idol”: There are hundreds of me’s inside of me I’m facing a new me again today It’s all me anyway. Still unanswered, the question of identity is brought to the forefront in this song, quite literally by being the first line. Although he’s unsure of who he truly is, RM is actively working on discovering himself and his identity. Seen in the comeback trailer for Map of the Soul : Persona, he’s depicted as four different versions of himself: Kim Namjoon, an idol, a rapper, and a leader. I'M STILL NOT SO SURE IF I'M A DOG OR A PIG OR WHAT ELSE The mention of dogs and pigs could be a reference to the the controversial comments made in mid-2016 by the head of Korea’s Ministry of Education’s policy bureau, Na Hyang-wook. He claimed that 99% of South Korea’s people could be treated “like dogs and pigs” because they had no ability to move up in the world, therefore were simply being fed and kept alive. This caused an uproar in South Korea at the time and drew attention to the extremely classist and elitist structure of their government. This topic has also been addressed by BTS in their song “Am I Wrong?” off their 2016 Wings album. By questioning whether he falls into this system or something else entirely, RM continues his own self reflection to discover his identity. Have ears but don’t listen Have eyes but don’t see Fish live in all our hearts Its name is selfish, selfish We’re all dogs, pigs, become dogs because we’re angry BUT THEN OTHER PEOPLE COME OUT AND PUT THE PEARL NECKLACE ON ME This is a Korean proverb, literally meaning “pearl necklace on a pig,” like the english “casting pearls before swine.” In context, it means offering something valuable to someone who doesn’t know its value. Although the singer doesn’t know what he is worth, others have made him important and valuable. I DREAMT OF BECOMING A SUPERHERO NOW IT FEELS LIKE I REALLY BECAME ONE This isn’t the first time BTS has brought up this superhero metaphor. In their 2018 song “Anpanman” from their album Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’ they give more insight on this complex. I’m a new generation Anpanman I’m a new superhero Anpanman Wanting to be a superhero is a common dream for kids, but the question becomes posed: do you have what it takes to be a superhero? Unfortunately, like the Japanese anime character Anpanman, most aren’t the best qualified. BTS themselves don’t believe they’re well qualified to be idols for others to look up to, but they’ve found themselves in the position regardless. However, they’re still willing to try. They don’t think they’re well suited to be role models, but this doesn’t stop them from wanting to help those they can. This line simply recalls this fact. BUT AS IT GOES ON THERE’S SO MUCH BLABBERING ONE SAYS, "RUN" ANOTHER SAYS, "STOP" There will always be people telling you how to do things, and there will always be somebody that is unhappy with your choices. This may refer to one of their recent songs “Idol”: “Keep on chit-chatting, saying this and that I do what I do, so you do you You can’t stop me lovin’ myself” BTS knows they will always have people inflicting their opinions on them, and that this happens to everyone, no matter how severe. You can’t completely avoid criticism and hate, no matter who you are. Thus it is important to stay true to yourself, as BTS has expressed. A great example of this idea is in a widely known Aesop Fable called, “The Miller, His Son, and the Donkey”. THIS ONE SAYS, "LOOK AT THE FOREST" THAT ONE SAYS, "LOOK AT THE WILD FLOWER" Another internal conflict RM faces is the one between perspectives- whether he should gauge things on a broader level (the “forest”), or whether he should focus on the smaller things that bring him joy (the “wild flower”). MY SHADOW, I WROTE AND CALLED IT HESITATION IT HAS NEVER HESITATED AFTER BECOMING THAT IT KEEPS APPEARING UNDER THE STAGE OR THE LIGHT KEEPS GLARING AT ME SCORCHINGLY LIKE A HEAT WAVE (OH SHIT) HEY, HAVE YOU ALREADY FORGOTTEN WHY YOU EVEN STARTED THIS By referencing the word ‘shadow’ here, which doesn’t seem too significant at first, RM actually references an archetype of Carl Jung, a psychologist featured on BigHit’s website as part of BTS' Map of the Soul era. The shadow is the darker part of someone’s personality, one that’s typically masked by the individual. The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge. In this line, RM identifies his shadow as hesitation. He expresses how his darker side is a side of him that doesn’t immediately reach out to all of the opportunities in front of him. He’s been launched into a life of success, but he still hesitates when it comes to accepting and appreciating it. RM chooses the clever image of a spotlight to further depict this, since they cast physical shadows. Carl Jung has many theorized archetypes, however three distinct ones appear in the comeback video for this song: persona, shadow, and ego. YOU WERE JUST DIGGING IT THAT SOMEONE WAS LISTENING RM asks himself if he kept making music just because he saw that people were listening to what he had to say. He is afraid of rambling and droning on in his music, and seeks to remind himself of his true passion for his art. THE REGRETS THAT I DON'T EVEN GET SICK OF ANYMORE RM has spent so long dwelling on his past mistakes that he’s become jaded with the habit. He is now able to view his past self through the eyes of someone who knows better and has grown in a way that reflects this. I TUMBLE WITH THEM EVERY NIGHT UNTIL I'M DISGUSTED The previous line, stating RM “[doesn’t] even get sick of [his regrets] anymore”, could construed to imply RM has simply fallen into a state of apathy regarding his mistakes. However, with these lines, RM goes on to say he continues to grapple with these mistakes of his and what he could have done instead - grappling with them to the extent that he grows repulsed with himself. AND TWIST THE IRREVERSIBLE TIME HABITUALLY His description of this process as “[twisting] the irreversible time habitually” refers to his wishing he could change the past and thus prevent himself from erring. This is best reflected in the juxtaposition of the album’s title track “Boy With Luv” with 2014 title track “Boy In Luv”. Whereas the music video for “Boy In Luv” has been criticised by fans and non-fans alike for the misogyny so prevalent in the aggressive attempts of BTS members to woo their female love interest, “Boy With Luv” is a correction of this. This line could also be an allusion to BTS' official web comic, “Save Me”, in which the protagonist Seokjin is “given a special chance to go back in time and help his friends fix the mistakes that led them down this path”. Next in the reply....

THE THREE SYLLABLES OF MY NAME AND THE WORD 'BUT' THAT SHOULD COME BEFORE ANY OF THOSE “But Namjoon” is a phrase that K-pop community uses when one of their faves do something problematic and they want to redirect the attention to Kim Namjoon, rapper and leader of BTS, and to justify other’s actions. Kim Namjoon once did some problematic things that some have characterized as racist, colorist, or sexist. He has since apologized and educated himself. He is innocent now but K-pop community still brings him up at their convenience. TELL ME ALL YOUR NAMES BABY In RM’s UN speech, RM/Kim Namjoon states: “What is your name? Speak yourself”. In the speech, he also mentions: “Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me”, pointilizing that the person he was in the past is still part of him. Later in the song, he states: “My name is R” referring to his past names. So, in this line, “Tell me all your names baby” he is asking about who you were in the past, which contributes to your current self. DO YOU WANNA DIE? This line recalls a darker theme from BTS' 2016 era for their album Wings. In the title track for the album, “Blood, Sweat & Tears”, the desire for self sacrifice leading into death is emphasized. My blood, sweat, and tears My cold breath Take it all away Kill me softly Close my eyes with your caress I can’t reject it anyways Based off of Hermann Hesse’s novel Demian, which is featured on BigHit’s website for the Wings era, the concept of willingness and devotion to another regardless of morals is studied in Sinclair’s character development. “Persona” revisits this idea. By asking “do you wanna die?” RM criticizes this mindset, showing his own growth as a person. While in “Blood, Sweat & Tears” there’s an obvious longing to die, in “Persona” it’s referenced as a question, creating a hesitance towards the idea. WHERE'S YOUR DREAM? RM parallels his lines in “No More Dream”, the song BTS debuted with in 2013: Hey, what’s your dream? While this line was posed in an almost cloying, mocking way in “No More Dream”, in “Persona”, RM now asks it in earnest, as a genuine bid for self-reflection. This relates to Carl Jung’s (previously explored) idea of the “shadow”, the darker, unexplored aspects of the psyche, as: The shadow is the first to be met when one starts his self-analysis. RM asks these questions to the listener to spark a conscious effort within themselves to identify the inner workings of their unconscious, or “shadow”. MY NAME IS R All of RM’s most recognized stage names have begun with R, starting all the way back to the first songs he released in 2007 under the name Runch Randa, his first stage name Rap Monster, and his present-day stage name of RM. THE 'ME' THAT I REMEMBER AND PEOPLE KNOW THE 'ME' THAT I CREATED MYSELF TO VENT OUT In this lyric, RM is talking about two of his personas: RM of BTS and Kim Namjoon. “The ‘me’ that I remember and people know” is Kim Namjoon. While “the ‘me’ that I created myself to vent out” is RM of BTS. Many k-pop artists and idols have struggled with identity issues, as many times they fear that what the public wants is the image of them that their company created, and not the real them. While is it widely known that BigHit offers BTS a lot of freedom when it comes towards the concepts and songs that they use in their comebacks and albums, RM is almost at the end of the process of “learning to love myself” as BTS has stated in “Answer: Love Myself”, a song in their previous studio album, Love Yourself: 結 ‘Answer’. The me of yesterday, the me of today, the me of tomorrow (I’m learning how to love myself) With no exceptions, it’s all me YEAH MAYBE I HAVE BEEN DECEIVING MYSELF RM has become so embroiled in the various personas he has created - Kim Namjoon, rapper, idol, leader - he is no longer sure which is his true self. Thus, he has managed to lie to himself in his attempt to separate the characteristics of his identity that he associates with different aspects of his life - family, friends, career, stage, self. MAYBE I'VE BEEN LYING BUT I'M NOT EMBARRASSED ANYMORE THIS IS THE MAP OF MY SOUL This line can be a reference to Jung’s Map of the Soul, a book by Murray Stein, based on the Psychology of Carl Jung, founder of Analytical Psychology, who proposed and developed the concepts of introverted and extroverted personalities, and deepened that of the power of the unconscious. Dr. Stein talked about how he got to known that BTS was inspired by his book, saying A couple of months ago, a Japanese student told me he’d discovered that the BTS website was recommending my book. I said, ‘What is BTS?’ and he told me, so I looked them up online, read a little bit about them and left it at that. Then about a month ago, the same student told me they were coming out with a new album titled Map Of The Soul: Persona. He also explained the meaning of persona, through his studies in Psychology Persona is a reference to the theatre, it’s the Latin word for the masks that actors wore on the stage - and we all put on masks, in a sense, when we go out into public. How you present yourself, how you address other people, how you locate yourself in the social world - as a younger brother, or a student, or a professor - all of this is really very prominent in their consciousness and their functioning as people in their society BTS always talks about the society and how we should live in it. In this song, exclusively, RM confronts the giant version of himself, showing th persona that overshadowed his ego and sings in a room full of mirrors, each one reflecting repressed aspect of his personality. DEAR MYSELF YOU MUST NEVER LOSE YOUR TEMPERATURE CUZ YOU DON'T NEED TO BE NEITHER WARM NOR COLD RM continues to reference past songs. In this line he references BTS' song “134340” from their 2018 Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’. 134340 is Pluto’s asteroid number after scientists denounced its title as a planet, and the song “134340” as an ode to the planet, personifying with its detachment from the solar system. The temperature right now is -248 degrees I once belonged in a world under the sun (The song paused, the song stopped) A smoky layer of mist in the heart of the stars (You erased me, you forgot me) In contrast, RM makes the statement in “Persona” that it doesn’t matter what temperature you are, or what your title is as planet or asteroid, you are still unmistakably you and do not have to define yourself with such trivial matters. THE 'ME' THAT I WANT MYSELF TO BE THE 'ME' THAT PEOPLE WANT ME TO BE THE 'ME' THAT YOU LOVE AND THE 'ME' THAT I CREATE THE 'ME' THAT'S SMILING THE ME THAT'S SOMETIMES IN TEARS RM’s old stage name used to be Rap Monster, but changed to RM because it didn’t reflect who he was or the music he made. Some theorize that RM could stand for “Real Me”. RM also used a similar structure to talk about his identity before in the song “Answer: Love Myself” in their previous album Love yourself: 結 ‘Answer’: I’m looking for myself again But I don’t wanna die anymore Me, who used to be sad Me, who used to be hurt It’ll make me more beautiful PERSONA By putting the stress on the last syllable of Persona, RM creates a wordplay with the idea of having a persona and the Korean word for “I” (나) which is pronounced “Na” I JUST WANNA GIVE YOU ALL THE VOICES TILL I DIE This line brings up a concept RM introduced in his 2015 track “Voices” from his mixtape RM. It’s a song that laments Namjoon’s experience feeling like his own voice has been drowned out by overbearing exterior voices. However, it concludes with him surmounting this struggle and then actively deciding to share his voice with others who feel the same way he once did. My dreams are what gives my voice to everything No matter what appearance I have, with my mic and lyrics I don’t know how you’ll be while listening to this, but Even if you curse me, it’s good, because in the end you’ll find me again Unbeknownst to others, raise my voice’s volume up So you can know, so I can reach you In “Persona” this idea is built into something even more monumental-sharing and reaching others with his voice is something Namjoon wants to do for the rest of his life. I JUST WANNA GIVE YOU ALL THE SHOULDERS WHEN YOU CRY “If we helped your dream and your life a bit with our existence, our music, our performances, our pictures or videos, even if it’s not big, if we could reduce your pain from 100 to 99, 98 or 97 that makes our existence worthy.” - Wings Tour Final, RM, 2017 BTS want to act as a source of comfort for their fans, whether it be through their music, their performances or social media.

"Pigs & Dogs" is referring to a particular politician who rudely called the lower class citizens in Korea that insult. RM is nicknamed the 'God of Destruction' due to his clumsiness with breaking things, hurting himself or losing things. He has also received criticism for his facial image due to not being up to the Korean beauty standards that is expected of K-pop 'Idols', which is what groups are called there. Pearl necklace does have a significant meaning but I can't recall it.

You got most of the bars in this track right actually and I actually like your interpretation. Actually almost all BTS tracks have lyrics that are up to the listener's interpretation....so open-ended. They tackle a variety of topics. -I recommend "BTS - Map Of The Soul: Persona Explained By A Korean" by the channel "DKDKTV" if you are interested in more of the meaning of the song in the context of the Korean language and the concept of the album(Map Of The Soul: Persona album from 2019) from which the song is from. It's a very psychology-heavy album inspired by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung's book "Map Of The Soul". I was gonna try to explain some things and answer some questions you had regarding some of the lyrics but I think the explanation video will answer those question perfectly so do check it out please.

The part you were trying to understand at 17:17 was actually during the time that BTS first starting rising anytime anything happened with any other artist, people would say “But RM”. There was always something they were accusing RM of doing whether it be plagiarism, misogyny, or making fun of his name and hairstyle… he got used to people turning everything back to him. BTS faced an unusual amount of criticism at this time in their careers because people in Korea didn’t understand how they could be doing so well when they were from such a small company with no connections. He is speaking to some of this criticism that he wrestled with for a long time. RM is a deep thinker and this comes through in his lyrics.

I seen a comment about the title and RM says Persona but the 'na' means I in Korean and it does makes sense because right after he says PersoNA he questions who he is.. he's suck a lyrical genius it's crazy

I've been into Kpop since 2012 and I've seen many fandoms since then and quite frankly no other fandom starts so far in the negative in terms of impressions (or more like assumptions) the way ARMY does. I think that's what some people have picked up on in your Joke reaction video and got twitchy about. Don't worry too much about it, just understand that it's tiresome for the fans to constantly have to prove themselves of not being some sort of obsessed crazed idiots. With that said, ARMY is literally a full spectrum, all ages, even going into their 80s and 90s, all races, nationalities, social standings and, for better or worse, mental maturity. And if the word ARMY is too intimidating, Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth is just fine, lol. Also the fandom's color is purple so all the purple hearts you see is ARMY showing their love. And if you see someone write 'Borahae' that's also them showing love and support💜

You nailed it! ARMY really does start with a deficit and we have to prove ourselves. Which becomes tiresome. It's an unfortunate cycle.

I do like seeing ppl work through the song like you do, sounds like you like philosophical stuff, then RM might turn out to be your favourite in the bts rappers. Suga is more conversational imo and hobi is more stylistic. Looking forward to suga’s shadow and jhope’s ego. I really do love the map of the soul albums.

BTS are such a humble genuine group because they took a break because they were kinda out of track on music even tho they are the biggest band right now.....their popularity is at peak an artist to take this step just because they feel lost is more genuine to me .......that shows the artistry the dedication and the love they have for music is just heartwarming....u dont see many ppl do this....yes i stan them from 2015 and they never have disappointed me never😊😊

I'll drop a little Korean insight! In the language you can add endings to give meaning, instead of putting it into a wider context. Like if something is surprisingly good, in english you might say "Oh this is actually really good?" but in Korean you just say good+a word ending. There's a bunch of those that allow for compacting meaning without filler words. It's interesting with languages that some things are shorter to express and some are longer. Also there's a lyric wbesite called doolset for BTS lyrics that will give any missing context and explain things like wordplay(if present) line by line.

12:52 One of RM's nicknames is "God of Destruction" because he's a bit infamous for accidentally breaking things. He doesn't have a driver's license (he cycles everywhere), and the other BTS members (mostly) joke that he shouldn't drive for the sake of world peace. ARMYs generally find the proclivity charming and endearing, because it's such a human flaw in a guy who, in all other ways, is insanely talented, intelligent, mature, eloquent, handsome, and put-together. (And he's not even my bias.) I wouldn't even call what he does clumsiness, really, because it's not like he's a Mr. Bean who constantly fumbles or drops things. He just has spectacularly bad luck with physical objects. (And he's uniquely disaster-prone in the group, either-- Jimin's an incredibly graceful dancer, but he trips or falls off of chairs a LOT more frequently than RM does.) It's been a source of great frustration to him because of course he doesn't MEAN to do it, and he's sometimes broken things that were very meaningful to him or one of the other members. He's extremely self-conscious about it. And when much of your life happens on camera, your flubs get remembered for a LONG time.

Like everyone else said already, RM explores and comes to peace with his Persona, Suga describes his Shadow and understands that he has to accept the fears it contains because it's also part of him, and J-Hope agrees not to be ashamed of his Ego. The great thing about these three, this particular questioning is very on par with their characters. 💜💜💜 And don't be afraid of the ARMY. All we ask is a genuine reaction and respect even if you don't like something. Shadow, which you'll review next is my favourite of the three, but SUGA IS my bias. I love everything he does, he is very raw.

Thank you for your reaction. I'm glad you enjoyed the song. I think your comments at the end are interesting. It's true that BTS place more importance on their music than their status. They have been running non-stop since their debut in 2013, without any lengthy time-off except in 2019. Eventually this took its toll. This hectic schedule, the pressures of the K-pop world to keep churning out new music, didn't allow them to grow as people and as artists. Eventually it became harder to find something to say. (They talk about this potential burnout in "Black Swan".) So last June they announced that they would take a break from doing group music and focus on solo projects. (They're still doing group activities together outside new music.) I admire them for making the decision to prioritize their mental health and their music over fame and success. They're now at the top, but instead of milking the situation and going through the motions and releasing generic music, they chose to take a break and discover who they are as individual artists. The first member to release a solo album was J-hope, with "Jack in the Box" released last July. Similar to BTS songs, the tracks in this album reflect J-hope's thoughts and feelings about the world and about himself. I think you would really enjoy doing an album reaction, dissecting the lyrics in the individual songs and seeing the connections between the songs. I look forward to your reactions to "Shadow" and "Ego". You'll find they have different rap styles, as well as different writing styles. I really hope you'll come to appreciate each of them and the uniqueness they each bring to the group. ===== Btw, they have a song about being superheroes, called "Anpanman". Anpanman is the weakest superhero because he has no superpowers. He has a red bean-filled pastry as a head, and he tears off pieces of it to feed people. BTS are often asked in interviews/press conference, how they are able to keep themselves down-to-earth and humble. RM answered, he considers their success as 50% ARMY, 35% BTS (5% for each member), and 15% their label. So in any success they achieve, it's a group effort and his contribution is only 5%. He says this thought keeps himself grounded. ===== When you revisit BTS songs you've reacted to, you can read the translation from the doolset website. It provides notes about cultural references, wordplay, rhyme schemes, and connections with past songs or past comments.

i'm happy this is more to your liking :) loved how you interpreted the lyrics! and a plus here on 13:17 "people are not interested in my clumsiness" it also can be seen as people only see him as RM the leader of bts or his stage persona and not "Kim Namjoon" his human side just like he said on a recent video bts did talking openly about their temporary break as group, namjoon said "somehow it's become my job to be a rapping machine and remake music and speak in english for the group so i just quietly go along with them [the others members of bts]. this is how my life kept going, the group would go on fine if i just did the work i was assigned but i kept feeling like i was trapped inside myself." some people just saw him as the leader sometimes they didn't even see him as an artist anymore and much less as a human who has flaws and have to overcome them

"but" was added before Namjoon's name by people who criticized him at his early career, he was called "but Namjoon" by them, and by mentioning his 'lungs' he is talking about the nose surgery he went through so that he can breathe better, haters wanted him to d word and lot of more things, these are infos that people outside kpop-bubble won't know.

Your passion for music, especially rap, shines through in your videos, and your passion isn't surface-level, simple headbanging to the rhythm. You take a song and allow your senses to process every nuance and embrace the splendor that rhythms and sounds can offer. Then, you plunge into the lyrics where you dig in and digest what the artist is saying and the choices made in creating the piece. In sharing all your thoughts, you allow your audience to enjoy the piece on a level they may never have wondered on their own, and to gain new insight into the song and into themselves,

This song isn’t just about him it goes along with the album Map of the soul. Their story tells a story! It’s actually genius because they have made ARMY the best investigators of all time! We look into everything they do! I think that is why we love reaction channels so much! Just to see if they pick up on everything & to spread their love to all corners of the world! Go back & start from the beginning of BTS’ s meaning for the albums then you will catch on fast! Xceleste has a great video about the meaning & so on!

in my opinion his shadow is his anxiety and his insecurity/lack of confidence in himself if you pay attention, his shadow starts talking in the song after the "oh shit", and it asks him "have you already forgotten why you started this?", the shadow says "someone like me ain't good enough for having this calling" (music), ain't good enough for trying to speak the truth or to be a muse for anyone, which is him questioning himself if he's worthy of being in bts's position cuz they have become muses/idols in a way his shadow keeps making him doubt himself, it says: "the flaws of mine that I know, maybe that is really all I've got" his shadow goes over regrets in his head at night, even though he knows it's just twisting a time that cannot be reversed, very anxious habit to have after stating the fears his shadow keeps feeding to him ("I'm not good enough", "ppl aren't actually interested in what you have to say", "have you forgotten your purpose?") he states confidently that this (these fears, but also his past, his mistakes, his flaws, his tears) is who he is and he is not embarrassed anymore, everything is part of himself and he chooses to accept that
