this is basically my story. i was known for hyperrealism portraits as a child, then when i tried to make a comic later in life, i realized my fundamentals were horrible. I did not understand anatomy and the little 1 class we spent on perspective never stuck with me. Advice to anyone starting out, even if you are talented, broaden your mind. Pay painstaking effort to the fundamentals (perspective, anatomy, shapes, composition) very early in your art journey and everything else will work out. even though i'm trying to better my fundamentals, it's a lot harder since i'm so many years in drawing. good luck.

I have seen a writer describe genius as talent being wholly committed to an idea. I was always a “great” writer, but as I got older I realized I just wrote a lot, and to the layman it was good because none of them wrote often or had even the slightest mastery of how to put words together in a way suggesting a complex narrative or thematic framework. It was in my realization that anyone could write (people write emails and texts everyday) that I realized the hard work that must come to elevating a craft beyond simply “doing it”. To take a compulsion and turn it into an art.

"Sometimes magic is just someone spending more time on something than anyone else might reasonably expect." - Teller I think it took me a really long time to appreciate that my favorite artists were spending 40-80 hours on a single piece. And at the same time had finished 100s of pieces at that level. When I realized that it changed how I thought about drawing in general. I don't have your talent but I'm hoping that I can learn to create illustrations I'm proud of.

Yes! Sometimes as an artist, you don't have to learn a new technique, just some patience lol. I'm trying to grow in that area too :)
