Harbor Frieght Air Compressor Won't Hold 40+ PSI? Fix it yourself! (21 gal. Air Compressor repair)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this instructional video (which I started in the evening because of the record temperatures here) I show you how to save money and make your own gaskets to repair your Harbor Freight Central pneumatic air compressor. Especially if you are like me and you need your air compressor today, not wait a week for that off name company to hopefully send you the right gaskets for it. Hope you enjoy! Thank you for checking it out!

Another idea of making replacement gaskets. Taping the gasket paper around the openings is always a great idea. But if you own a typical computer scanner, you can put the item in the scanner and scan it. Then print out a one to one size copy and use it as your pattern. Then a simple exact-o type knife and even some spent rifle cartridges, that can be sharpened on the opening, can be used to cut the round holes for the bolts. I have made tons of gaskets that way.

So far the RTV is working good but if it does not hold up then I will do it the old-fashioned way like you did. The poor quality of the OEM HF gaskets was laughable. Thanks for the tutorial

JUST fixed mine for FREE. Got a tip for you guys. When you remove the cylinder head and reed plate and gasket under it you will probably find a broken reed, and it will probably be on the side closest to the air line going to the tank. My broken reed calipered out at .010 thousandths of an inch so what I did was take an old hacksaw blade and backed it with a straight piece of wood, used a belt sander on both sides of the blade and reduced it to .012 thousandths, then reduced it to size. Used the thick non-corrugated cardboard from a cell phone box and cut the gasket. Used a tiny dab of grease to hold the reed in the cylinder head in it's pocket as I turned it upside down to reassemble it. Functions perfectly.

Problem is there's apparently one additional gasket that I can't seem to figure out how to get to to repair. Sadly all of the gaskets on mine were ripped and I have a feeling was part of the problem. Also, what grade of sandpaper were you using for clean-up?

Consider using Permatex Instant Gasket for this purpose. It sets pretty quickly; if you don't like the result, just clean it off with a product like brake kleen or acetone and then cut your own gaskets, like he did.

  • @TheFenderman

    @TheFenderman

    7 жыл бұрын

Hey thanks for watching! I can't really imagine what drive gears could cause metal shavings besides something seriously failing. The gasket material that originally came off was in fact paper gasket. A think using a metal gasket would actually be a tad thick for what it is used for. Luckily it doesn't really have to hold back water or oil, it's just air. That's why I'm thinking something is a bit more broken than a gasket with yours. Hope this helped!

My question is i adjusted my regulator to give me 40psi, but when i pull the trigger on my gun the regulator gauge goes below 40psi then i let go of the trigger the regulator gauge goes back to 40psi so what im asking is even if the regulater gauge goes below 40psi when i press the trigger am i still getting 40 psi at the gun tip? Or is there something wrong with my compressor?

My compressor wasn't holding pressure but it had nothing to do with the compressor side. It was the rubber diaphragm in the electrical cut off switch. It would build pressure, cut out as normal but I could hear air leaking. The diaphragm had turned to a sticky rubbery mush. Had to buy a complete new pressure switch and air manifold arrangement which was no big deal. Less than $20.00 and should be back working again shortly

alternatively lay new gasket material on the surface its to mate to, tap gently with ball peen or brass hammer, really round striking surface is what matters here. the round surface of the hammer hitting the edges of the underlying metal makes easily distiguishable lines to cut along. or good ole fashion paper and pencil or charcoal or crayon and do a rubbing, cut out paper use as a template for gasket material. also for the love of god buy a couple pairs of weed trimming scissors, they have a curve built into the blade and come super sharp. god bless thanks for the advice my pos hf comp wont go past 40psi, now i know why.

There's nothing I can do about the video now and it's here to stay. Just for fun I decided to look over one of your videos from when you first started, vertical film on a cheap cell phone, no true dialogue, shaky, wind noise. Nobody starts off at the top, period. We all make mistakes when we first do something like this, nobody is perfect. Not to sound bitter but I wanted to make a point. It's easy to sit back and criticize but I like to follow the glass house and stones rule. Nevertheless, I appreciate your watching and your advice! :)

@@TheFenderman a very fair assessment my man. I was unaware of the age of your video. My bad. And yes...very good numbers.

Ah, no biggie, if I worried about what everyone said on here I would have a head full of grey hairs by now! I just figured it was a good time to clarify, especially to a fellow youtuber!

I generally stick to the rule of thumb, if it didn't come with it, it probably wasn't made for it. So I'd stick with paper to keep anything gooey from getting down into the cylinder.

forgive my bad english in advance, my comment is that the way you did the holes is very danger , i made them with the same kind of drill , seating the material in a flat piece of wood and obteined a clean hole with no risk.

3 years running strong and I practically use it on a daily basis. I appreciate the suggestions but I assure you I cleaned in there quite well! Besides, it's a harbor freight compressor, I didn't buy it to be precise with. I bought it to beat it up and get a new one when this one gives up, and it still hasn't given up.

@Fenderman, Yes, keep the the cylinder clean by stuffing it tight with a clean oily rag, and wipe it on the way out, but don't worry about the sanding per se. You can see that the machining of the mating surfaces is way coarser than the sanding grit. That's why we have gaskets that conform to the surface and seal.

hey normies never hold a gasket while u use a drill to make round holes for bolts, this dude is allowed cause he knows what hes doing, same way i remove literally all guards from tools except chop saw, most of you dont, dont drill a hole in your hand.
