Today I'm experimenting with a new way of making super nice and effective blacksmith tongs out of the $15 end nippers from Harbor Freight. Than I'm using them to forge a Japanese thing-style thing.

Eli, it's kinda wild to think that I was watching your content when I was just a kid, and you weren't too far from being a kid either. Now neither one of us is and I'm still watching your content. You've been a role model snd source of inspiration for me at times, and I appreciate the content you share. I love the new videos, you genuinely seem to be enjoying them and the production is really really nice. Can't wait for the next video!

Literally thinking the same thing. Eli and I are the almost the same age and I've been watching his videos since the beginning. I think ZNA Productions was one of the first channels I subscribed to. Eli is a very wholesome and kind person and his method of teaching how to build incredible things in such an attainable way not only emphasizes his genuine passion for making and creativity, but also shows that WE can do it too (if we chose). Furthermore, the fact that Eli is willing to share both the lows and highs in his personal life and the advice that helps him push forward really speaks volumes about how genuine and caring he is and has honestly helped me push forward through some difficult times myself. Eli, if you're reading this, we all love you for you. Keep being you.

As a guy who has made a few pairs of tongs, and reforged nippers before, you should keep in mind they are hardened cutting tools, at least at the business end. And that makes for a challenge because if you use them for quenching and they get quenched a few too many times they can get brittle and break. Honestly the best material I have found for a quick pair of serviceable tongs is regular mild steel, specifically quarter inch by 3/4 flat bar. If you still like the nipper idea you should check out big dog forge's video on how to modify them. Even better just get precut tong blanks. They are like 12 bucks. Keep the good videos coming. I like your out of the box thinking! Blessings.

Hey Eli! I would love to see you forge your own tongs. I personally site getting proficient at tong making as a big factor that improved my forgings overall. I would also recommend making them out of mild steel so they can be quenched without worrying about cracks. And once you get comfortable making tongs, I often forge mine from scrap and they cost me next to nothing. Good Luck! I would love to see more blacksmithing from you!

A cool mod and a very cool build. *One of my bits of advice being a bit older than most guys into this stuff these days is never forget, there's such thing as TOO sharp!* I made a point to stop at a point with certain tools based on meeting needs and the obvious risk. Last year, I clipped my left index finger scraping paint to weld on a new bracket to my racing quad for it's ignition coil. *I was insanely deep and unbelievably, I didn't slice through the tendons somehow.* I had sharpened that knife and though "man....this is so much sharper than I should have taken it."

Fun fact: Nipper was a slur used by the Allies fighting in WWII in the pacific theater when fighting the Japanese. Nipper comes from a combination of the Japanese word for Japan which is Nippon (Nihon is more common but Nippon is the primary focus here lol) and the American racial slur N-......netflix.
