Harbor Freight Electric Log Splitter Review

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I got one of these little Harbor Freight Tools Electric Log Splitters and decided I would put it through the paces and do a quick review. I've used gas log splitters before, so my expectations for this little guy were not very good. While this thing is certainly not a gas unit, it held up surprisingly well, and for the money, I would say this little gem is a good deal if your splitting needs are like I mention in the video.

We put the Harbor Freight Electric Log Splitter to the test today to do a review. Compared to a gas log splitter, it is obviously weaker and slower, but we were pleased with what we got for the money.

    I have had mine for 8 years, each year I use it to split ~4 cords of hardwoods, mostly oak. Being 72, I am not after speed. I am after getting the job done without too much effort. I have mine under my back porch which happens to be where I stack my wood too. It stays in the dry, turns on every time I plug it in. No fumes, no oil to mess with, set it up on a stand and have a table on the opposite side from me. That way one piece falls on the table and the other piece I hold with my left hand. Mine looks like yours but it is a two speed on the ram. Fast to get it to the wood, then slow and power to start the split, then back to fast to get through the wood. I split sitting on a bar stool, the wood to split in a 2-wheeled wheelbarrow and the split wood I toss into a 4 wheel garden wagon. When full, then just wheel it to where I am building a stack and stack it. No bending over multiple times, saving the old back. I use electric chain saws, one corded and one battery operated to cut the logs. All logs less than 5 inches diameter go on a sawbuck and get cut to length...20" for our wood heater. Been doing it for 35+ years and just recently decided the major cutting of log days is over...will do a few, but with my Biden money I will buy firewood for the next few years. Already 1/4 split and then if it needs further splitting, as I sort through it, it is taken from my trailer and put in the wheelbarrow to start processing further! I like working with this machine as it is fast enough for me and what else I got to do...watch the boob tube?? HA HA

    Mike H, I am on the same page with you. I am 68. I have had years of heart trouble, bad back, my body is SHOT. I use the electric splitter. I made a platform on a sturdy saw horse. I put a " Drop Off" shelf under that platform. ( Lazy, don't like bending over all the time.) This is what you use, when you are officially DONE PROVING YOURSELF in life. I let the maul splitting be up to my 38 year old son.

    Yer problem round at 5:45 is mostlikely shellbark hickory, still pretty green (high MC).. One clue for ID would be location- mainly centered on Ohio River valley. Slabbing off chunks from a round like that is simply known as "daisying", no need to create new terms. Daisying definitely requires less force than splitting down the middle. Hickory is wood of choice for tool handles.

  • @smartass6071
    @smartass60714 жыл бұрын

    When splitting forks Never try splitting down the middle. Thats where your masking your mistake. see where the two limbs fork off in two directions and looks more like a strait grained log?. That is where you need to start your split, like your splitting two different logs. Split one side , then split the other side. Once you do that you take the hardness away from the actual fork. Once you get both side split off, then flip it 180* and split the fork from the bottom side twaddler the fork starting with the strait grained first back to the actual fork part last . That uses the strait grained wood as leverage to force the fork to split. Always split the strait grain first , that will weaken the forks and knots, and they will split easier.

    I bought the HF manual pump 10 ton splitter. Just started splitting Sequoia Oak from California, it does ok on the straight pieces but the twisted ones with knots it won't split them. Does wood split easier when it's wet or when it's dry? I know that when oak dries out it's a bear to cut with a chainsaw, but that's not the same as splitting wood.

    Looking at these now over having to rent a 26 ton Gas splitter every year. I know the limitations. Heard if the power cord extension is "too long.", not sure what "too long" is - 25 feet? Then the unit will turn off and not cycle.

  • @K5ATA

    @K5ATA

Alot of nice cherry and hickory is also quite common around here particularly cherry wood, that stuff makes up 30-40% of my yearly 4-5 cords that I burn from each late October-late March even early April depending on the temperatures each year.

    @@K5ATA First of all I'm sorry for such a horrible first message. I think I was clear in the fact that mine never split as well as it looks yours does. Then watching more videos I've come to a possible incorrect assumption, it's a million times easier to split green wood than aged wood. Maybe that's the difference and maybe you can tell me if most of that was green? Secondly Please stand it up on end and use the dipstick to check your hydraulic fluid oil level (yearly depending on how much you use it). Another video showed me how to do that and that was my only problem. I didn't have a Spec Of Oil on the Dipstick when I checked it. I went to Walmart and bought 2 probably 10 to 12 bottles and it used 90+% of the first bottle. I love knowledge and helpful people so a deep and sincere thank you for making this video.

Don't knock it before ya try it harbor freight doesn't have the same reputation for junk any longer you can actually get alot of very high quality tools and equipment from there , and their tool boxes are far sturdier and higher quality than any tool boxes sold by Craftsman , Lowe's , or home Depot.
