With today’s economy every penny is important asset. The Chinese Lathe or Mill is like an incomplete Kit that people get and start building on it. I would say it promotes ingenuity and gives everybody ability to own the lathe without taking out the second mortgage. Eugene

just because the board is not available does not mean you can not track down the part or parts on the board that are bad and replace them , you can also look for cold solder jonts or cracked ones and repair any you find and this also sometimes will fix the problem to, never stop till all has been tested and checked over properly,,

Hi there, Great video. Your site seems to be down. Are you still active in motor controller work? I have a controller from a Busy Bee 7x10 mini lathe that seems to overload in the high range. Works fine on low range but as soon as I try to run the lathe in high speed, the board goes into an overload situation (there is an LED that sits beside the board POWER LED that glows when the system stops). Only way to get out of this is by powering down the lathe. Since it works so well in the low range, I'm wondering what might be going on. Any suggestions? Thanks Doug

Yes you have to work on it and make it better, modify it and spend time with it. But ones you are done (Fixing) the lathe it becomes very good machine. My Father is a machinist with over 25 years experience has (Fixed) his Metalworker lathe and he has been using it over 10 years now with very seldom problems. If you try to manufacture a lathe in US , a better quality lathe like they use to make in the 50’s this lathe will cost allot of money and people simply would not be able to afford it.

This happens on all Chinese mini lathe controllers. Most common part that goes bad is Mosfet Transistor. If you buy few of them you should be fine. good Luck

just a question I have the exact same mini lathe 7X12 Chinese (sunmore) my motor is only running at full speed when I turn on the machine and put it in forward or reverse its just going full blast! Can I just connect one of those 110v variable speed controllers to the plug for the lathe and control the speed??

The reason your leaves is going full speed is because you’re MOSFET transistors are shorted out. If you replace MOSFET transistors it will start working normally. If you connect variable speed controller to it it will most likely work but you will lose the torque of your lathe. The board that you have inside of your lathe is pulse with modulation controller and that allows you to have low speed and high torque.I hope this helps

The daughter board is an "analog" not "digital" controller which seems to be a common misconception.

Well….. I’ll tell you . Chinese machines are not the most accurate and not the best quality machines on the market for sure. But for a small shop on the budget or home use they are very good. Chinese machines require allot of modifications and adjusting before they can be used for any serious work. The big plus of the Chinese machines are their price. You can buy Chinese lathe for under $500.

I've been a research machinist for 30 years and working with Chinese lathes machine tool is a sad affair. Why make cheap machines in the first place? Why is is that Clausing or Atlas lathes made in the 50's are better than those made today? Why is quality being regressed? It seems like a waste of time, labor ,and materials to make a machines whose life expectancy is far less than it ought to. I have an Atlas in the shop still running and I doubt you'll fine a Chinese made lathe last as long

These Chinese lathes are crap. Don't waste your money. I've had two and both crapped out with less than a hours use.

I bought a cheapo Harbor Freight mini lathe in 2013, and it has been a total workhorse for me. I have put many hours on it for light commercial work, mostly in plastics. OK, it's not super accurate, and I've spent some time truing it up, but the unit has kept on going and going. Only problem I've had with the electronics is the on/off switch crapped out. The board continues to work fine, with one idle speed adjustment.

The only thing wrong here is that it is not 100% chinese, it is from Harbor Freight! This brand sucks, they should only sell good quality products! But they sell shit and some times don't even replace defective parts!
