    Can that thing measure capacitance value (MFD) of say a standard furnace blower motor capacitor? I've seen where HVAC people claim the cheaper multimeters under $30 don't have the proper settings/options to measure something like that.

    Most expensive multimeters have voltage spike protection on their circuit boards with diode arrays, metal oxide varistors and ceramic explosion proof fuses. If your working at a factory testing motors on noisy 480 volts you probably need one of those and not because of the protection for the meter but your safety against arc flash. I have some experience with that using a cheap meter it went up in smoke while I was using it. For working on boat, cars these cheaper meters work fine. The accuracy of cheap meters is pretty good if working on cars is what you use it for.

    I like the fact you said the ine thing every multimeter nerd forgot, it doesnt have to be perfect, for most automotive qnd houshold needs its fine, ive use the cheaper harbor freight to dial in small adjustable dc to dc boost converters to within .01 volts accuracy, and i did test it with an oscilloscope, low and behold it was spot on.

    They sell leads, pretty cheap on ebay, I bought a 21 pc set for around $8.00 (US).. I agree about 99% of people using them, they don't have to be balls on perfect a +/- of 2 or 3 works, I repair computers, smart tv's, monitors & ect.. I have that very one and I love it... I even bought a hard case for about $10.00 (US) at Harbor Freight to keep it and my other cables in... Also, the speaker is crap, I don't pay any attention to mine, I just look at the screen... Thanks for sharing.....

    And if you want a cheap oscilloscope, the auidio input on an old pc, and some software, combined with a voltage dividing probe for higher voltages, you got a high accuracy oscilloscope right there bub.

    Sorry, I didn't mean to criticize. And I wasn't clear. On meters like this, if you have the range set for, as an example, continuity and you probe an energized circuit connected to mains voltage, it will not be able to accept the high energy input. This can cause the meter to blow up. I referred you to Dave Jones' channel because he has some videos demonstrating this. If you are probing after the panel, you need a cat 3 rated meter. Before the panel, you need a cat 4 meter. The HF meter is cat 2, and is fine for probing low voltage circuits. As a comparison, if you took a Fluke model 87 on continuity and probed an energize circuit, the meter would safely accept the input and likely not even be damaged.

    sorry but your point really does not pertain here, because EVERY meter has a rating. these meters are limited use home and auto. these are not marketed as anything a technician would use since you need certified high voltage tools. you brought up a point that wasn't necessary since Alvarez stated that this is shop-auto/marine use.

    @@AMetalWorks If a person is using a tool for something it isn't intended, or in a way it wasn't intended, then that is on the person, not the tool. There is nothing wrong with warning people, but don't act like it's a problem with the meter. Don't get mad at a cat because it won't bark.

    I have the 30 year old version of that meter. The only fuse is the miliamp/ low power scale. Unfused meters can get you killed . So use it with great caution in high voltage. That meter could become a flash of plasma in your hand. If your using it on cars your probably ok. But keep it away from leathal voltage.

    I agree with all you said but the test light comment I have had 12v readings on my meter but not enough amps to power a bulb. try it right on a battery touch the positive or negative with one probe and drag the other probe on the plastic across the battery if its real clean you might not get a reading but its cny . nice video

  • @AMetalWorks

    @AMetalWorks

    If you have 12 volts reading on the batter you should be able to power up a 12 volt bulb. If you can't their are other issue and a test light isn't the tool that should be used to diagnose those issues. first test that should be done is with a battery analyzer. If the battery test good then you need to start using either a multimeter or a power probe to find the problem in the circuit. Yes test lights can be used for things. However if you are dealing with an electrician that is any good. He'll have all the proper tools that would render a test light useless.

    Don't bother, he does not understand resistance. If he did he would understand that you need to load a circuit to get a true representation of voltage when testing a circuit. A good way to load a circuit is with one of those test lights.... In conjunction with a multi meter

    The issue is safety. It will not have proper high energy fuses. If you use it in a high energy circuit, it will blow up it you face. See EEVBLOG's review of multimeters to see why it is not safe at high voltages (120+).

    Not sure where you saw this particular multi meter on his channel. I just searched it and could only find the free bee one. That video was a waste of my time. He didn't explain anything. He was just very condescending and made fun of it. Didn't try and educate anyone as to what he was bitching about. I did watch another video where someone tested this multi meter at 1000 volts and it didn't blow up or stop working. Not sure what to think of that. I guess you'll have to educate us all on the subject.

    lol, when you make comments like, "if you see someone break out a test light", makes you sound very ignorant. The best automotive diagnostic technicians use test lights because it loads the circuit. Testing an unloaded circuit with a multi meter is not a true representation of its voltage if its wiring is damaged or has high resistance. I would avoid blanket statements like that, when you really don't understand what you are talking about. If you want to educate yourself on why a test light is a useful tool, I would check out scanner danners youtube channel
