I too have always been curious about these HF spot welders. A lot of various things made today are spot welded so it should come in handy repairing them. Excellent explanation and demonstration. Thank you for that. BTW I also have a shop full of tools I don't really need.

I have the 220 version, and if *it is aligned properly,* it can weld two pieces of 1/16 sheet steel *readily.* The 110 version might work well with .035 or so?

when I was in school 55 years ago, we had one in shop class. you closed the handle pressed and it fired. There was a dial in the back for how long it stayed on for. It was great.

I just bought one today, and found your channel to see if I remembered how to use one. We had one in metal shop but that's been 50+. Good job. I come 2 family lines that never threw a tool away plus being an electronics tech, bus mechanic, and woodworker I guess I'm a hoarder. The only problem is sometimes I buy another tool I already have!

Hi Lee, that looks like a handy addition to the shop. Saves quite a bit of time over pop rivets and gives a cleaner look as well.

I enjoy your videos a lot and watch them religiously Lee and on this specific video while visiting my momma and she says, “ ANTHONY YOU STILL WATCH KING OF THE HILL? “ and I looked at her puzzled and asked what makes you think that? She says, “ He sounds just like the Hank Hill character. “ lol funny ole mother I have. Thank you for the videos and all the time you take out of your life to help myself and others with the educational work you provide it helps!

You should never have to justify what you spend, as long as you can afford it & you enjoy it! I rent my small workshop & always get comments that I waste that money as it seems expensive. This is from the same people that spend twice my rent on beer a month!!!

Good review of it. It seems to work well. I made one from a re-worked micro wave transformer and battery cable. It works well - lots of How To videos that show what to do. I'm going to see what else you've posted - I bet you'd make a good neighbor!

I’ve been using spot welders for many years. My first one was this same machine, but from another vendor. It’s a generic machine. It’s fine. But the specs, while theoretically correct, according to their numbers, are really conservative. I’ve found that you can easily weld a total of 3/16”. Even 1/4” is not totally out of the question, but is really at the very edge of possibility. While it’s said that you can’t do aluminum, you can. The problem is that aluminum is very conductive, so it takes more time, and can mess the tip up, so you have to clean it frequently. Just remember that these things are rated for 50% use. So one second on and one second off. Another problem is that thin materials require very short times - a fraction of a second. That’s impossible to do repeatedly. You really need a timer. A darkroom timer with tenths of a second and time to 5 to 10 seconds is fine, but won’t handle the amperage. So the output needs to go through a relay. Any relay big enough will do. I recommend at least 20 amps and double pole. A 120 volt coil is simplest. So connect the coil to the timer output, and a heavy extension to one side of the relay and the wall, and another to the spot welder, and you’re ready to go. The wall connection should be to the fixed connections, and the welder to the movable contacts. Have fun. Just remember some things. These tips don’t let you get too close to the wall of a pan or box. If the tong touches it, then you will get a burn mark there. There are numerous tip shapes you can get, including ones with the points to one side to let you get closer. I buy tips that aren’t pointed, and machine my own odd shapes as required. Just make sure when you buy tips, that they fit the HF style machines, not the Miller. They look the same, but the screw thread size is different, so beware. If you do that, first screw the tips on tightly, as you would when using them to get the orientation correct. A slight error in that will never allow the tips to align. A problem some people have with alignment is that they dont realize that the bottom tong moves down under full pressure, moving the tip back. So alignment needs to be correct at that time, not when the tips barely touch. One thing I do is to cover the tong above the tip with insulating fiberglass tape. Same with the bottom tong.

G'day, Great video. I've been looking at one of these to put some car door skins on . I've been looking at a Tecna 7900 for about $1400 Aus but this cheaper one looks like it would do the job. Cheers from Melbourne Australia.

Hmmm, having spent a good few hrs drilling out spot welds on the aluminium on my Landrover these last few weeks, it would be good to know if the unit can spot weld Ali sheet (0.040”- 0.120”) range. Best of health to you . Mat

I didn't know until I saw this that HF sold one of these. The application for a spot welder that immediately comes to mind for me is attaching tabs and strips to batteries, which would require the two electrodes to be approaching the material on the same side, rather than on opposite sides. Is it possible to configure this unit to work like that? Only ones I've ever seen so far are homebrew versions.

I would think this would be way too powerful for that application. Spot welders have been around in one form or another since the late 1880s, so this is not a new thing... for your application both Amazon and AliExpress sell then that run off a wall wort, or a few 18650 cells,
