Happy Ribbon Skirt Day! 💝

Ribbon Skirt Day is marked on Jan. 4 in Canada. This is its second year.
It started when Grade 5 student Isabella Kulak from Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan wore her ribbon skirt to a “formal day” at school.
An education assistant told her that her skirt didn't count as formal wear.
For Indigenous people, ribbon skirts are worn at social gatherings and ceremonies, so they are considered formal wear.
The National Ribbon Skirt Day Act, passed in 2022, says National Ribbon Skirt Day will "provide an opportunity for everyone in Canada to recognize, learn about, and celebrate the importance of Indigenous traditions and expressions of culture."
Last spring, CBC Indigenous reporter Candace Maracle visited one of the best places on the rez to get material to make a ribbon skirt.
