There are a lot of turn based Western RPGs: Baldur's Gate 3, Wasteland, Divinity, Shadowrun. But I get what you mean about Clair Obscur, it has that JRPG turn based style where everyone faces off standing in a line politely waiting.

Not only is Trails my favorite and most loved series, but I think after so many games and so much time, a part of me has stayed behind in Zemuria. When I start a new game my strongest feeling is that I came back home. I was never in Calvard before but when I started the Demo from Daybreak I also got the feeling of coming back home to Zemuria. Probably also a reason why I play trails games so slow now. The Prologue of Daybreak took me 8 hours, when I looked at youtube how long other needed for it I saw that it is about 2-3 hours.🙈 Also only 18 days until Daybreak.

I don't know if Baku will read this but for these Souls games, they give you tools to make the game easier. It's up to you to utilize those tools. Most people who consider the Souls games difficult is because they don't utilize all the options these games give them. To use a JRPG analogy, it's like if someone fought a monster while ignoring elemental weaknesses or gameplay mechanics that make fights harder than necessary. For the the boss he is stuck on (Tree Sentinel), he is beatable at the start of the game, but the point of his placement is to teach you that you can always come back to fight tough bosses later after you've gotten stronger. The world is open, explore other places, get stronger, then come back to face him again. This series of games are punishing but never impossible and can be overcome with some thinking. You don't need to have super reflexes to beat these games. Hope you can find enjoyment in these games, that goes to Derek too if he gives the game a shot.

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment! I was fully aware that the Tree Sentient was something that shouldn't be fought right out the gate (quite literally), but I was streaming for a charity fundraiser at the time, so I thought the challenge would bring more pizzazz lol I did manage to get it down to half health while intoxicated and with a reversed controller (one of the donation redeems) 😄 -Baku

0:30:00 I very much relate to this entire section. When I first started playing RPGs I only cared about the combat and the game systems and seeing how powerful I could get, and it wasn’t until I had been playing RPGs for over a decade that I started caring about actually completing them, because I had become invested in seeing the end of the story. The best example of this is Final Fantasy 7. I beat that game twice in my early years with RPGs, and for me, the infamous event at the end of disc one was an afterthought compared to entering the cave after crossing the swamp from the Chocobo ranch and deciding that I wouldn’t progress the game at all until I could beat the Midgar Zolem, because I wouldn’t let Sephiroth one-up me 😆 But after over 20 years playing RPGs, and with over 150 completed, I am now an official card carrying member of the "single-eyed-tear Cry Baby Club" whenever any emotional moments occur in any RPG or anime 🥲

I love to break games. The hardest I broke a game was in Valkyria Chronicles 4. For example the last fight wich is probably realy hard and long which takes you probably one hour or longer. But when you break the game and you just buff the heck out of your character you can finish the boss with two shots in like 5 minutes.

Wow, serves me right for waiting several days to get caught up on your episode; I didn't expect to be a featured comment! Though I'm sorry I sent Baku on a wild goose chase. Here are some more specifics if you'd still like to look into it (I won't include any links because KZread is weird, but this should help you find stuff): The KZreadr I was referring to was Mystic; he does a weekly news show about all things PlayStation and on May 31 he covered Sony's 2024 Business Segment Briefing. I believe that business presentation is available online, but I'll admit I didn't watch it. I was just going off of one of the graphs that Mystic screenshotted and included in his video. Looking back at that screenshot, I should also clarify two things about my statement: First, that ~50% of revenue number came specifically from the Playstation Store, so that doesn't factor in hardware or physical games revenue. But more importantly, the graph in question says that ~50% comes from "major franchise titles, with a large share of ongoing content". They show logos from several franchises including live-service games like Fortnite, Genshin Impact, and Apex Legends, but they also show Call of Duty and Madden which I don't know are technically live-service. So, my paraphrase might not have been completely accurate, *but* I do think this gives us some context about the wider gaming market. While gaming is bigger than it has ever been, there is a sizable chunk of the audience outside of our RPG bubble that is looking for a very different experience.

Given how many animal characters are in BoF, I wouldn't mind them elevating shapeshifting to a mechanical hook possessed by all characters. Nina into hawk/harpy/penguin, Bo/Bow into dog/wolf, Bleu into snake/gorgon, Katt into lion/tiger/whatever. I don't think I totally loved the implementation in the games and Ryu was kind of Gary Stu every game. I get that OMG I am a dragon now is a power trip, but I kind of want more dynamic resources and incentives to swap forms more fluidly, and letting others shine, and letting Ryu be more than an auto attack bot when you're hoarding mana. YMMV.

Toraware no Paruma is an otome game ( a game aimed at female players where they get to make a male character fall in love with them) about a mysterious guy who is stranded in an island as a prisoner. He has amnesia and the player is a female prison psychologist who has to get him to "open up." Apparently there are a lot of female gamers in Japan and they love this game.

I bet that Lunar 2 set didn't cost any more than the normal cost for games back then. $50 was standard, but multi-disc RPGs could be more. I remember Final Fantasy 8 costing $80 (the worst $80 I've ever spent.) Most "special editions" back then were just the normal release of the game. I doubt there was a "standard" edition of Lunar 2. Most of my special editions were just normal, regular, off the shelf sets. I remember getting Devil Summoner 2 at a Game Stop. It wasn't on the shelf, so I asked the clerk about it, and he pulled out a goddamn diorama with a Raiho Plushie sitting next to the game. It was the only version of the game they sold. Only cost the normal $50 price that PS2 games usually went for.

  • @SuperDerek

There might not have been less-expensive versions, but I would think the CE would have had to cost more than a normal release... right? If not... Well maybe _that's_ why Working Designs went under? 🥲

  • @japanimationman4442

    @japanimationman4442

    7 күн бұрын

I do know that Working Designs had some trouble with Growlancer. They had to sell the second and third games together because of Sony's anti 2D graphics policy at the time. Sony would only allow 2d games as anthology collections in the west. It was a deliberate attempt to devalue the concept of 2d graphics and make themselves look high tech and cooler than the competition. Pretty sure I bought the set of two (each of which had loads of dialog and menus to translate) for the usual $50. Growlancer 5 was mercifully in 3D, so Working Designs could release that game by itself, but it also came with an art book, a special features DVD, a keychain, and some pins. But I don't recall it costing any more than $50. Of course, those were on the PS2. The Lunar games were PS1, so they may have been closer to that $80 price tag that FF8 had. I'm not sure how those games got around Sony's 2D rules, though. Maybe they had some 3D effects in the game somewhere? As long as something in the game was 3D, you could get away with it. Like Castlevania SotN which had a few 3d enemies and spell effects. Capcom got away with some 2d stand alone releases, but only because of the power of their IPs, which would have hurt Sony if they had been Sega exclusives. I saw some official Capcom statements that were pretty blunt about this regarding Mega Man 8. And it seems the only reason Mega Man Legends ever got made at all was to make Sony happy. I'm still kinda grumpy that Sony wasn't content to let 2D graphics die out on their own, and instead had to actively murder them.

"Too many sales!! 😡 I want to pay full price and more $70-$80 games put out by the company darn it!!!" Said no one ever.... I cant even imagine what Capcom was thinking when they included "too many sales" in the list of possible consumer complaints.🙄

Great video. I also have a question, do you have ever consider making a lore/story video of the JRPG you have ever play? Recently i am looking for story video to hear while working. But game like Shadow Heart Covenant, Fatal Frame 3-5, etc, that not mainstream barely or not have video that tell the story. It is not easy to enjoy games story (again) compare to re-read a book or re-watching anime/movie.

The trails series is in desperate need of an editor. Even longer, and much better written, novels will not put every bit of lore into the main story. They usually have companion books for those that want to know all of that stuff because they understand that it bogs down the story trying to stuff all that in

As much as I hate thinking this, that survey from a corporation standpoint leaves me with almost no hope for anything breath of fire related. Even though it was high in some lists, the amount of time, money, and effort they would have to put into it compared to other series is staggering. I hope more than anything that I am wrong, but my money radar tells me that if we are extremely lucky, we might see remasters of the first 2 games. The true JRPG curse is profit margins, sigh.

I think that live service games revenue number for playstation platforms is true. check out the newzoo general report for 2023 (it's free on their website some where). almost all the money comes from live service games in the industry (mobile not included). fortnite and roblox take almost everything, those games are bigger than big. Sony also gets 30% from all the live service games spendings on their platform. BUT there is one catch, there are just a very few live service games that make all the money, all the other ones make zero money. Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, GTA... Be prepared before you read that newzoo analysis, it's devastating... you will feel like the video game industry is fundamentally broken...
