To clarify for people who aren't super familiar with what is and isn't complicated on the piano, most of the notes he plays aren't *really* individual notes. They are arpeggios, single chords broken up into individual notes, and with a little technical practice, it isn't actually *that* complex. It's all just 1 chord. But longer and bigger... That's what she said.

i mean, jazz alone tells a dark story. it was formed by black men and women going through difficult times, the horrors of slavery and discrimination. so in a way, even if it is jazz, it's still dark. its a kind of facade.
I like watching this because it makes me feel like I can relate more when I am trying to write a song as opposed to when I watch someone's already a perfectly written song. Even the musicians you look up to have a process!
It`s truth man, it`s really becomes more and more dark every birthday - every year nearer to death & getting older, and every year you contemplate about it
You know Charles' acting is on point when he can make you believe he's a 7-year-old child without even doing anything
This isn't dark at all. If someone sang Happy birthday like this I would legit cry. Such a beautiful arrangement
Starts off dark and ominous, switches to some sort of jazz-variation and goes back to dark and ominous. I like it.
Please, please correct me if I’m wrong and he’s done it already, but if I’m not: Please put this on Spotify.
This is literally just: "I have to keep the original melody so I'm gonna do 50 key changes and have nice-sounding resolutions in order to make it sound onimous enough."

It's always amazing watching people who are so in tune with their instrument improvise like this.

Charles should've clarified: it's not that he's avoiding minor chords (he used a lot), but that he's not changing the melody to conform to a minor scale. The notes of the melody have not changed from the "major" version, just re-harmonized to be ominous.
