I really enjoyed your video. I had my first Barbie in 1964 and loved her. A few years ago I restarted collecting what I had in my youth, the wonderful dolls and clothes of that early era. Your video gives us all the background and great details about the creation of the world of Barbie. Thank you for all your knowledge.

Eek, I cannot stand the early 1960s & the 1959 Barbie dolls or Ken dolls. They were ugly!

I enjoyed your video, Michael. I was one of the little girls who went crazy for Barbies. I remember saving my dimes until I had $3 to get a Barbie. I never realized the first Barbie faces were done by hand. I never thought of that. I find that an interesting fact. I use to make my own Barbie clothes out of socks. I made my Barbie furniture from Kleenex boxes and shoe boxes. My Barbie houses was a rug that I separated the "rooms" with belt buckles. Lord, the good old days. (smile) I really enjoyed this video. It brought back sooo many good memories.

You were so creative! Barbie is such an inspiration.

I used to play with Barbie’s in 1962 age 3. They were my favorite playthings of all time…I used to love playing with dolls of all kinds. I used to bring my Barbie’s to school with me - I saw myself pictured in 1964 with my classmates when I was 5. I remembered having a lot of Barbie’s, but sadly my mom didn’t saved them for me. So I decided to buy me few Barbie’s to remind myself of my childhood. It’s so nostalgic !!

The *BEST* photo I have is of Christmas 1970, with my new Barbie Dream House, Ken, and lots of new clothes/shoes--I was ECSTATIC !!! Ugh, if only I'd known to saved at least *some* of them (not for monetary value, but just for the happy memories!!!!) I'd probably still dress and play with them, too----hee hee!

i loooove this video- the condition of these dolls are just immaculate nothing better than seeing two people talking passionately with a huge background knowledge on Barbie asking the real COLLECTOR QUESTIONS ! What a treat with the prototype at the end i honestly loooove the Barbie Swirl hair- the rooting is fascinating, 1960s Barbies intimidate me because theyre so exspensive. The price atleast is justifyable as the dolls are historic at this point- i would love to have a Titian swirl barbie in the black and white swimsuit one day! Ive also always wanted one of the MABA Barbies- id love to see yall do a video on them

The Silkstones are so ridiculously pricey, it's mind-boggling! I looked up my 75th Anniversary Silkstone, the one with the striped swim-suit and real folding sunglasses on ebay today. Owner was asking $500! That means I dare not change mine in any way.

Midnight Lace with Doris Day. I think I have that movie if that's the one with Rex Harrison in it. That Enchanted Evening dress is literally 2 pieces! Imagine that!

LOL over your speculations of what Lili's .....ahem...."profession" was. "Men bought her nice presents".....hee hee! I wonder if that's how she got that FABULOUS Austin Martin car from the early 60's? (P.S....watched a vid yesterday that said that car is VERY rare, but ebaY actually has many!). Your vids are making me want to go to ebaY and go CRAAAZY with vintage Barbie stuff. I have loved learning SO MUCH info from you today, Bradley and Micheal.

I really enjoyed watching this! #3 Barbie was my only "name brand doll" growing up. I got her in early 1960. She was a brunette with blue eyeliner. She came with pearl earrings. She never got green ear-thank goodness- since she lived in her large black case for years. I credit that case with keeping the accessories together with her. I had a blond flocked hair Ken and a blond Midge to keep her company! I thought Barbie was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! I took Barbie Bazar magazine and they had a tip that I thought I would pass along. They said to look inside pockets and purses for small items. I had bought some nice outfits on the secondary market and found her charm bracelet in the resort wear pocket and a handkerchief in her blue corduroy purse! So exciting! Check inside! Love this content!!

Cousins are great! My cousin and I played Barbie together also.

I was 8 years old when Barbie first “came to town”. I was blessed enough to get one as a gift from my Mom. Barbie was a wonderful doll and the line of fashion that was available for her we're exquisite. Playing Barbie was so much fun.

And, since there's very few access, not knowing in which issue of the magazine it was published made my search harder. I'm not from the united states so access to physical versions of the magazine is just out of the question for me.

Love this. I would love to know where the itty bitty Barbie cases come from.

The clothes were to die for back in the day and it makes me so incredibly sad that the clothes and in fact, Barbie herself are sooooo cheaply made these days. It makes me cringe everytime I see stuff in the stores today. It doesn't surprise me that Japan wanted to make and did make quality goods, even if it was for a child's toy. It's part of their culture to have quality over quantity.

The one sad thing is the lack of knowledge of lilli! She had so many beautiful dresses and dolls (I believe also playsets? I could be mistaken) that seem to not be archived that well (on the internet at least) I’d love to find out more about her.

It may be the lighting, but her irises are not colored.

I'm going to google once I'm done with this, but wanted to say that I am fascinated by Bradley's extensive knowledge! In case google won't tell me, I'd love to know how long he has studied/ loved Barbie? Is he a designer? ( I still cannot get over how each coat, dress, even POCKETS are fully lined! I'm going to assume that is NOT true any longer).

I have collected Barbie (and studied Barbie) since age 12- Over 40 years. A looooong time. I do design for my events and Barbie is an amazing inspiration.

It is nice of these gentlemen to give props to the doll that inspired Barbie. I will bet the creators of Bild Lilli are kicking themselves that they sold the rights to their dolls to make way for Ruth Handler to create the doll that started it all. Kind of wish something could have happened to Bild Lilli for her to take off and be successful! There's something to be said about a risque gold digger as a doll, ha!

Actually, Ruth Handler stole the design of Barbie, and the company that created and produced Bild-Lilli dolls sued Mattel in 1961. It wasn't until 1964 (a year after they settled out of court) that Mattel bought Greiner & Hausser's copyright and patent rights for the Bild-Lilli doll. It wasn't like an "oh, darn, we shouldn't have done that," it was more like a "we are a small company and can't afford to continue to fight Mattel in court over an infringement of our patented hip articulation and a direct copy of our dolls design (down to the exact same bathing suit!)."

The legal battle with Marx, Hauser and Mattel is a fascinating study. The settlement was at a time with no google/ knowledge of the actual market that Barbie had created was a bit sad. However- I think the concept created by Mattel was far more enduring and beyond the original concept and intention which was more of a novelty than a child’s plaything. Thanks for your input. Its always fun to discuss such an incredible history
